Electoral Reform bill

Overview

Throughout the political history of AH.com, there has been several attempts - especially early on - to set the elections to a specific date. These attempts include the Electoral Reform bill of 2006 and Othniel's Electoral Reform bill. This latest attempt would set the General Elections to the first Thursday in August.

History

MP maverick (E) submitted this bill to the Lower House of Parliament on April 16, 2009. MP Susano (FFF) agreed with the idea, but questioned the choice of setting the elections to the first Monday. maverick (E) responded: “Well, I assume more people would have access to computers during the workweek…would a wednesday or a friday be better?”

MP Pkmatrix (YSP) suggested setting the elections to the first Thursday in August instead, which maverick (E) agreed to.

Proposed Text of Legislation

Whereas it is more efficient to have an election on a set day rather than a set date, and whereas more people would be able to vote during the workweek rather than the weekend, it is hereby proposed:

Article I: that the date of all general elections shall be set on the first Thursday of August, and not the first day of August, thus setting the date of the current election on August 6th as opposed to August 1st.

Article II: that a more appropriate date should be picked shall the electoral officer be in disagreement with this date over his schedule

Results

The Lower House of Parliament began voting on April 20, 2009 and will end on April 27, 2009.

maverick (E), Pkmatrix (YSP), Prime Minister TheDarkServant (E), and Susano (FFF) voted AYE.

09camaro (E) voted NAY, but later changed his vote to ABSTAIN.

Deputy Prime Minister LordInsane (E), VulcanTrekkie45 (YSP), Keenir (E), Ran Exilis (E), Haggis (E), Gladi (E), Demosthenes (E), Opposition Leader Kidblast (YSP), Nekromans (YSP), and Steffen (FFF) did not vote.

Unable to meet the criteria for passage outlined in either Article I or Article II Section 2 of the Legislative Procedures Act, the bill failed to pass when voting ended on April 27.
