Incidentally, what does TTL's 9-11 attack entail relative to OTL? Are there differences in target/casualty terms? And as a corollary to that, is the War on Terror fought any differently ITTL?
As for 9/11 I would say the twin towers are in London and a run at Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace was attempted but the passagers stopped it.
I seem to remember a post (might have been from his posts in the infobox thread, not this one) that the twin towers (as OTL) were hit in New York, and that the houses of Parliament were hit as well as it was mentioned that the queen re-opened them after being re-built.
Based on my half finished wikibox and notes for TTL's attack, it involved a coordinated strike by multiple aircraft in New York and London simultaneously. The attacks in England took place roughly between 1:30 and 2:45 pm (local time), whilst in New York it was between 8:46 and 10:28 am (local time). I plan on finishing it off at some point...
The World Trade Centre (and the Twin Towers) is located in New York, and was destroyed as OTL with two plane strikes. Another two planes struck the Palace of Westminster (central London) and the Pentagon (OTL Northwood Headquarters in Hillingdon). Another three flights were hijacked, two targeting the Triskelion (a military complex analogous to a secondary Pentagon located in Fredericksburg (OTL Washington D.C.), totally stolen from the Marvel Cinematic Universe
) and another targeting either Buckingham Palace or Whitehall. One of the flights targeting Fredericksburg was brought down in Allegheny (OTL western Pennsylvania) when passengers attempted to take control, whilst the other was shot down by air defences. A similar situation took place in the one targeting Buckingham Palace, which came down in West Berkshire.
also, shouldn't 9/11 really be 11/9 given standard date format among most other nations IOTL is dd/mm/yy
9/11 retains its OTL designation for reasons of convergence. But the "in universe" explanation is that a local reporter for the Texan News Service was one of the first to report and broadcast footage, and in it they referred to the date as September 11 - so the 9/11 bit stuck from there.
Also this timeline has killed the M/d/y which is excellent
Indeed
Interesting. So in TTL Al-Qaeda is based in Somalia not Afghanistan. What's the state of Afghanistan ITTL? is it stable? or did the Russians make a better job of their invasion? What's Saudi Arabia peninsular like ITTL?
Yes in TTL Al-Qaeda is based in Somalia, which was a hotbed of sectarian tension and military strongmen for much of the late 20th century. The Invasion of Somalia was partly about getting bin Laden, partly about stabilising the country, and partly about the possibility of the hardline government having chemical weapons (allegedly). Somalia has since reformed as a weak republic within the Commonwealth, but suffers a lot of OTL problems.Afghanistan ITTL is a stable constitutional monarchy that is part of the Soviet sphere.
The Arabian Peninsula of TTL is dominated by the Hashemite Federation (commonly known as Mashriq), with the Rashidis controlling most of Nejd and the Saudis limited to the Hasa region on the Persian Gulf. The OTL UAE is expanded to include Bahrain and Qatar, as the United Gulf Emirates, whilst OTL South Yemen is a federation (known as Abyan) formed along similar lines. The UGE, Abyan and Kuwait are members of the Common Defence Pact, basically a more global Commonwealth-based NATO, and this is part of the reason Britain got involved in the Nejd-Hasa War of the early 2000s (plus a concern about oil supplies).
Point, had forgotten that but why would the world trade centre be in New York and not London?
Then again, why wouldn't a building called the "World Trade Centre" be in New York City?
I don’t know maybe because at one point the London was described as the world capital (it was nearly the Headquarters of the UN) and unlike Washington DC, London is on one the most busiest and important trade lanes in the world.
And that’s just OTL,in this world London is the capital of an empire which has eclipsed the Roman Empire in power and scope, is likely is the headquarters of the UN along with Headquarters of the Commonwealth and the U.K.E Parliament. Also it’s a few hours flight from the EU capital one of the largest combined economy’s in the world.
My thinking here is that London is definitely the Empire's First City (and one of the world's most important hubs), home to the British Imperial Government and the headquarters of the Commonwealth, with its proximity to Europe (including Paris, Brussels and Geneva - UN HQ) making it a major place for business.
I think that with the strength of America behind it, Britain decentralises a lot of things, especially post-WW2 where the Home Isles were nearly cut off from the rest of the Empire. So New York and other cities rise as major financial and business centres of the Empire. The World Trade Centre being located in New York makes sense as well, because it equals London as a financial and trade centre.
Of course, there's some parties that insist that they're
not communist at all, they just rather like Marx and whatnot. Those parties are basically communist in all but name.
Think the equivalent to the Canadian
Labor-Progressive Party, a *wink-wink* *nudge-nudge*
Marxist party.
Hm, that's interesting. I'd imagine that the Imperial Socialist Labour Party walks a pretty fine line, then.
Does this ban extend to Syndicalist (Scargillist for example) parties/politicians, too?
Indeed, many parties of the left-wing/far-left tread a fine line. the Imperial Socialist Labour Party is more mainstream, less communist and more democratic socialist at this point.
Syndicalist parties would probably not be covered under the ban, which would be mainly used against parties linked to (or suspected to be involved with, or funded by) the Soviet Union.
Just a question, who is Henry Hayes? Is he a made up character, or am I missing something?
Henry Hayes was the President in Stargate SG-1. This timeline is also a Stargate crossover in another life. A life I'm eagerly waiting to see.
Hayes is indeed a remnant of this series' previous iteration as a
Stargate timeline. The
Stargate is real ITTL, but references are minor and not overt, although the Triskelion is (in my head) the home of Homeworld Command ITTL.
As it was ANZAC day yesterday it got me thinking, is there something similar ITTL? Would the whole empire mourn on the same remembrance day or would there still be a separate remembrance day... maybe a WAANZAC day to include western Australia?
I could see the Asian/Pacific dominions having their own memorial/remembrance day. And ANZAC Day may be as good a day as any. However the Empire definitely mourns as a whole on 11 November every year.
