Hail, Britannia

How about making James Naismith emigrating in Texas and inventing basketball there?

I'd suggest the history of basketball ITTL go this way:

Naismith was born in Alamonte, Ontario, Canada in 1861. He designed the game and introduced it while teaching in Springfield, Massachusetts, New England in 1891. Naismith moved to Missouri in 1898 to teach at a university in the town of Lawrence (University of Cansez?). From there, the game evolved into the 5 on 5 indoor variety we know today. Basketball ITTL today is contested as a winter sport and is played at both amateur and professional levels not just across BIA but around the world (1). Interestingly, it's least popular in the British home islands, and less popular in Canada than the rest of BIA.

Missouri is considered to be the birthplace of modern basketball and is only one of the dominions where the sport is popular. Other strongholds of basketball include Virginia, Carolina, Ohio Country and Oregon as well as the nations of Texas and California.

(1) Generally, professional clubs begin training in October and open their seasons in November. Their domestic competitions are contested parallel to the early rounds of a North American Champions League. After the domestic league playoffs end in late April, league champions and qualifiers play in a 16-club knockout competition from May to June.

High school competitions vary by dominion, but are usually contested from November through March.

Intercollegiate/university competitions go from November through April. Each dominion has its own sanctioning body, and domestic competition is generally split into divisions and further split by leagues/conferences and independents. Conference winners and selected teams compete for domestic championships in March. April sees a continent-wide competition amongst the dominion champions, culminating in a championship game held in late April or early May.

Champions of Britain-in-America domestic leagues qualifying as First Division competition under the rules of the North and Central American and Caribbean Basketball Association:

And my proposal for ice hockey:

Ice hockey is derived from stick-and-ball games played throughout Europe, including the British Isles. Early 19th-century British soldiers and immigrants to Britain-in-America played stick-and-ball games on ice and snow in Canada and New England.

The game began to evolve into its present form as the 19th century progressed, but the birthplace of modern ice hockey is generally considered to be Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The first indoor game was played in Montreal in 1875, and two years later the first ice hockey clubs were formed and the first official rules written.

The sport professionalised in the early 1900s, and eventually developed into today's domestic competitions and pyramids. Domestic leagues play from October through April; champions then move on to the continent-wide Stanley Cup competition in May, culminating in a best-of-seven championship series in June.

Every dominion, along with California and Texas, has professional and amateur clubs. Generally, the sport is very popular in northern North America (Canada, Newfoundland, New England, Columbia, Ohio Country, Oregon, Missouri), and less popular in the southern dominions. Even so, there are southern and western 'hotbeds' of ice hockey (Dallas, Houston, Charlotte, Nashville, Tampa, Huntsville, Los Angeles, San Francisco).

EDIT: updated at Leinad's direction.

And my proposal for professional gridiron competition in North America. It's a two division set-up. The Championship winner moves up to the Premiership; the two worst teams in the Premiership at the end of the season have a one-game playoff, with the winner staying up and the loser moving down.

NORTH AMERICAN GRIDIRON FOOTBALL LEAGUE (most commonly known as the NAFL)

PREMIERSHIP
Eastern Division
Boston Puritans
Brooklyn Dodgers GC
Montreal Alouettes
New York Jets

Northern Division
Charlotte Panthers
Clarksburg Trackers
Sciotoville Gridders
Pittsburgh Steelers

Southern Division

Dallas Cowboys
Phoenix Wranglers
San Antonio Oilers

Western Division
Calgary Stampeders
Edmonton Eskimos
Los Angeles Rams
San Diego Chargers

CHAMPIONSHIP
Eastern Division
Halifax Schooners
Philadelphia Athletics
Providence Steamrollers
Syracuse Orangemen

Northern Division
Chicago Bears
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Michigan Wolverines
Toronto Argonauts

Southern Division
Birmingham Stallions
Nashville Titans
Norfolk Sailors
Raleigh Skyhawks

Western Division
Houston Texans
Monterrey Dragons
Orange County Sun
San Francisco 49ers

THIRD DIVISION DOMESTIC LEAGUES
Liga de Gridiron Futbol de California/California Gridiron Football League
Canadian Gridiron League
Carolina Gridiron League
Columbia Gridiron Association
New England Gridiron Association
Ohio Country Gridiron League

I'm going to ask the obvious question for those uninterested in sports in terms of the details, but what are the exact differences between basketball and ice hockey OTL and TTL? I ask this especially since I've seen people contest basketball as a winter sport OTL.

All look great, I've amended the Sport post with some of your ideas. Just a couple of things:
1) Florida and California are both majority Hispanophone ITTL, so that changes the names of their leagues/association.
2) Central America is part of Mexico ITTL, except Panama which is part of New Granada.
3) The NORTH AMERICAN BRITISH AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE, would probably be the NORTH AMERICAN GRIDIRON FOOTBALL LEAGUE (NAGL? or NAFL).
4) With Association football being more of a thing ITTL, I'm thinking one of the two New York teams would probably be soccer rather than gridiron.

Otherwise looks great :)

Do you mean in terms of the actual rules/laws of the sport? In which case I haven't the foggiest, but in order to avoid getting bogged down in details I'd assume they are more or less the same.

A lot of the differences in sport that I have elaborated on are in fact in the spread/popularity of the sport compared to OTL, rather than in the actual sport itself.

Well, that's why I asked Brian to possibly elaborate.

Now is probably a good time to give a massive thank you to @Damian0358 for all their hard work on helping remap the history and political geography of the Balkans. We are collaborating on some posts looking into that part of the world, which you will hopefully all see in the not too distant future. But until then you'll have to settle for this.

On and there's a new map on Page 1 showing the border changes in Eastern Europe and the Balkans :)

Can we possibly see a rundown of the current cabinet?

Of course there is :p

90oPyaR.png

The Imperial Cabinet of Great Britannia is the collective decision-making body of Her Imperial Majesty's Imperial Government, composed of the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, and the 20 cabinet ministers who head the government departments, the most senior of the government ministers.

Chaired by the prime minister, the Cabinet is the executive committee of the Imperial Privy Council,a body which has legislative, judicial and executive functions, and whose large membership includes the dominion first ministers and members of the Opposition. Its decisions are generally implemented either under the existing powers of individual government departments, or by Orders in Council.

Ministers of the Crown, and especially Cabinet ministers, are selected primarily from the elected members of Imperial House of Commons, and from the Imperial Council of Lords, by the Prime Minister. Cabinet ministers are heads of government departments, mostly with the office of "Secretary of State for [function; e.g., Defence]". The collective co-ordinating function of the Cabinet is reinforced by the statutory position that all the Secretaries of State jointly hold the same office, and can exercise the same powers.

A constitutional convention, that emerged during the Attlee government (1946-1950), is that all members of the potential Cabinet are "presented" to the Imperial House of Commons for a confirmation vote. Generally this passes without incident, as the governing party or coalition usually holds a majority in the House. Occassionally candidates for a Cabinet post are referred to their parliamentary standing committee responsible for their department for a "confirmation hearing", although this is very rare and has only occured seven times, with the last instance being when Libertarian MIP Daniel Hannan was referred to the International Development Committee over his appointment as Secretary of State for International Development. He was subsequently approved by the committee and the House.

NiPGNRG.png

It's worth noting at this point that the Cabinet posts are listed here in order of succession to the Office of the Prime Minister. The sudden death in 1974 of Norman Kirk meant that it wasn't entirely clear who was in charge officially, although Barbara Castle was de facto leader as First Secretary of State, thereby establishing the convention of the First Secretary of State being next in line. The 1977 Prime Minister Line of Succession Act established the order of succession as it exists today; next in line is the Deputy Prime Minister, followed by the members of the cabinet and then the "associate" cabinet members. There is a provision in the Act that the succession skips individuals of different parties to the incumbent in the event of the death or permanent incapacitation of the Prime Minister.

The provisions of the act have never been used, as Paul Tsongas was replaced by Richard Gephardt before his death, and in the case of Jack Layton he had left provisions for Brian Miller to serve as Acting Prime Minister after his death until the SDP elected a new leader. As it stands the order of succession in the event of the death or incapacitation of Sylvia Lim is:
1) David Miliband
2) Sir Paul Krugman
3) Nydia Velázquez
4) Sir Mark Dreyfus
5) Sir Alfred Sant
6) Brad Miller
7) Laura Nabarro-Márquez
8) Sally Jewell, Baroness Jewell of Renton
9) Tammy Duckworth
10) Joan Burton
11) Romeo Saganash
12) Valerie Vaz
13) Jared Polis
14) George Baker, Lord Baker

In conjunction with Leinad officially revealing our collaboration, I have the pleasure of posting the enlarged map of TTL!former Yugoslavia and Albania!

Republic of Slovenia - independent from Austria-Hungary at the end of WW1, as part of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs. Merged into the Republic of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia). Independent at the end of WW2 as a pro-west communist-sympathizing republic. Joined the EU in 2004.
Kingdom of Croatia - formed as the Independent State of Croatia during WW2, as the Feštetić dynasty are unwillingly put into power by the Axis-aligned Hungarians. With the success of the Lorković–Vokić plot, supported by the King, the Kingdom of Croatia ended up emerging post-war as a neutral state. Joined the EU in 2013.
Republic of Serbia - a Revolutionary Republic from 1804 to 1815, a Vožddom until 1848, and a Republic until the end of WW1, merged with the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, the People's Administration for Banat, Bačka and Baranja, and the Kingdom of Montenegro into the Republic of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia). Went Communist after WW2, but much reduced in territory to only modern Serbia, Montenegro, Peonia and eastern Ghegeria, known as the Federal People's Republic of Serbia. Broke apart in the 1990s and became the Democratic Republic of Serbia in 1999, then the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2002 before Montenegrin independence in 2007.
Kingdom of Montenegro - independent from the Ottomans since 1696 as a prince-bishopric, later principality in 1856 and then kingdom in 1886. Merged into the Republic of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) after WW1. Regained independence from Serbia in 2007, then restored the Kingdom in 2011.
Republic of Peonia - gained independence from Serbia in 1999 after the Third Balkan War.
Republic of Dardania (Ghegeria) - the escalation of Serb/Albanian tensions within FPR Serbia and Gheg/Tosk tensions within the Socialist Republic of Albania lead to the break-up of the FPRS in the former, more well-known as the Serbo-Albanian War in the West, and the Albanian Civil War in the latter, both events considered a part of the Third Balkan War. Following Albanian intervention in the Serbo-Albanian War, Gheg leadership in both countries united against the Tosk and Serb leadership. Gained recognized independence from Serbia and Albania in 1999 after the Third Balkan War.
Kingdom of Albania (Toskeria) - remainder of SR Albania, after losing the Gheg and Aromanian territories, recognized after the Third Balkan War in the 1990s. Restored the pre-WW2 Kingdom in 2003, originally formed in 1832 with a German royal family, before being replaced by an elective monarchy during the Revolutions of 1848, eventually leading to the Zogolli family establishing itself as the definitive dynasty.
Principality of Armanonia - independent under a native-born Prince at the end of the First Balkan War. Neutral during WW1 but occupied by the Axis during WW2 and annexed to the SRA after the war. Regained independence in the 1990s during the Albanian Civil War (part of Third Balkan War), restored principality one year after independence in 2000.

Before you ask, yes, Slovenia does look a bit off when compared to the world map, but be assured, these are the accurate borders. Also, there are minor border differences with Bulgaria and Greece when bordering Peonia, Armanonia and Albania (most of all Albania), but besides those and the more visibly obvious border changes as seen on the world map, there isn't much different with their borders.

Basketball is played 5 on 5 indoors (usually), with players advancing the ball by passing or dribbling, and attempting to score by shooting into the opposing team's basket. Most points at the end of the game wins.

Ice hockey is played 6 on 6 indoors (usually), with players advancing a flat disc called a puck by hitting it (passing) with a stick. Your team attempts to advance the puck forward towards the opponent's net, to score by putting the puck into the net for a goal. Most goals at the end of the game wins. In some competitions if the game is tied at the end of three periods the game is a draw; in the National Hockey League, teams go to a shootout (shooter against the goaltender) to decide the winner.

Does that make sense? If not, here are a couple of links that hopefully will explain the basics of each sport to your satisfaction:

1. I will change to the Spanish names for those associations.
2. Noted. Again, I will change.
3. See above.
4. Not necessarily. The Giants and Jets could be both gridiron and soccer -- Real Madrid, Barcelona and Fenerbahce are just three European association football/soccer clubs who also field competitive basketball clubs. I had in mind that some clubs ITL might field teams in association football and basketball, or football, or rugby or baseball or gridiron. Also keep in mind in NYC OTL, there are three clubs in the top two divisions: Red Bull NY and NYC FC in MLS, and Cosmos in NASL.
Then again, this is BRITAIN in America, and OTL I don't recall any of the clubs in the English football pyramid fielding competitive teams in any other sport. So the Giants could be a soccer club ITL and the Jets one of the two main gridiron clubs. Question then is what you name the second gridiron club...Brooklyn Dodgers, playing in a stadium adjacent to the baseball Dodgers' Ebbets Field?

So, the difference between basketball and ice hockey TTL to OTL is effectively nil? Since from what you've stated here and from what I understand of the games OTL, more basketball than ice hockey though, nothing here seems different?

Texas - Christian Democratic Party leadership spill (8 August 2017)
Screen_Shot_2017-08-08_at_11.png

In an overwhelming landslide, the Christian Democratic Party voted to retain Prime Minister David Dewhurst by a margin of more than two-to-one. Representative Dan Patrick, his challenger, will be "returning to the backbenches with his tail between his legs," as one Dewhurst supporter stated. However, even this is not a total win for the Prime Minister - already three members of his caucus have announced plans to defect from the CDP to the right-wing National Renewal Party, and several more are reportedly planning to do so. With Dewhurst's majority cut to nine members, millions of Texans are watching the latest news from Austin...

Also it kinda sucks that the DPM doesn't ascend to the office of PM if the PM dies. It's like being VP but even more boring.

Giants as the soccer club works for me, as does the Brooklyn Dodgers as another gridiron team :)

Haha I don't think so.

Well it works fine in the OTL USA, where the Vice President is from the same party as the President and elected in the same way. But in a parliamentary system, having a Prime Minister (even an acting one) who isn't from the largest governing party is rare (Australia is an exception). So the rule that it goes to the highest ranked member of the incumbent PMs party is to avoid a situtation where you end up with, for example, a Prime Minister who leads the minor party in the coalition (with 47 seats) as opposed to someone from the major party with nearly 300 seats, as could have happened in 1974 when Norman Kirk died.
