The flags of the Orionese state from its inception in 2374 to its dissolution in 3275. In 2374, the Orion Arm colonies went from an assembly of colonial representatives to a revolutionary government in rebellion, morphing into a semi-united federation. It used multiple flags throughout the conflict, finally settling on a modification of the very popular "blood martyr's flag", itself a variant of the republican flag adopted in '76. After the end of the war for independence in 2381, it became a centralized republic and one of the economic powerhouses of the galaxy. However, income inequality and human rights abuses inspired popular revolts that led to a socialist revolution in 2531. After a power struggle, a coalition of Leninist-inspired communist parties and militias took power and changed the name of the state to the People's Republic of Orion, then the People's Commonwealth of Orion after liberalization reforms in the 2580s. However, the reforms were too little, too late and attempted reversals of them in the early 2600s led to a democratic revolution overthrowing the regime. After a brief provisional republic, a constitutional monarchy was established with the crown voted to the House of Angevre, whose chieftain led the revolt. The empire's ruling house changed in 2770 to the House of Cauvan, which also saw the changing of the unpopular "black flag" to a more conventional one; the last emperor of the Cauvan was, however, a weak and ineffectual one and his death sent the empire into a brutal 20-year war of succession. The two claimant houses, Gillemetz and Lao, used different flags and held the throne at differing points during the conflict. The war ended in 3030 with the Gillemetz claimant marrying the Duke of Genevra, who assumed the throne after her death; he used a modified Gillemetz flag as the national flag, which stuck until the empire's peaceful dissolution in 3275. This final flag also marked the first significant departure from the typical Orionese flag ratio of 1:5:1.
