Congressional Motion of John S. Williams, Representative from Mississippi, on the naming of the first all big gun American battleship, Dreadnought.
You know... sometimes I see stuff and think "Oh hey, that's a funny joke," and then you find out that in 1906 Congressman John Sharp Williams, who was the Leader of the House Democratic Caucus and House Minority Leader at the time, actually put forward a bill to rename the USS Michigan to the USS Skeered O' Nothin' and your faith in humanity takes an equal restoration in tandem with a "You're serious?"

Another entry in my "German Winter"

Joseph Goebbels initially showed little interest in a space program for Germany following his ascension to Fuhrer in 1959. Under Hitler's command the Peenemunde Rocket Program had been placed under Wehrmacht command, and throughout the 1950s an interest in closing the Nuclear gap between the Reich and the US with the development of ICBMs took priority over any dream of space.

The launch of the Paul Revere Satellite by the United States in 1960 changed that. In a visit to the Peenemunde Rocket Center (today the Peenemunde Aerospace Complex) on June 13, 1960, the Fuhrer delivered an impromptu speech concerning the Reich's future space ambitions.

The announcement of a 10 year deadline on a moon landing sent shockwaves over the German Aeronautic Community. The push for space led to the development of multiple new technologies and prototypes. Initials plans for a possible moon colony were quickly scrapped due to budged and logistical difficulties, and instead a 3 men mission was chosen.

The Valkyrie Project was plagued from the start. The failing German economy through the 60s meant the program was constantly fighting for funds and being forced to cut corners. Corruption and infighting within the Wehrmacht leadership also significantly hampered development as many within the military cadre saw Valkyrie as a publicity stunt and diverted funds to their own war projects. Nevertheless when the Valkyrie IV made a successful trip around the Earth's orbit in 1969, the greenlight was given for the Valkyrie V.

Pushed ahead by 4 months in order to take place during the late Adolf Hitler's birthday, the launch was attended by the entire German upper cadre, chief among them the Fuhrer Joseph Goebbels (at this point already showing visible signs of ailing health). Reporters and News channels from around the globe were allowed within the Steel Curtain to attend the launch. After a quick speech by the Fuhrer, on April 20 1970 the Valkyrie V, triumph of the Reich and Joseph Goebbels' legacy departed the surface of the Earth.

For about 28 seconds before exploding. The Reich's National Television cut its feed almost immediately. International Newsfeeds soon met the same fate, but not before millions of people around the world saw the explosion. Immediately the Fuhrer personally condemned the accident and pledged to pursue the "culprits behind the murderous negligence".
Heinrich Lubke had the luck of having been (among many other titles) Director of the Peenemunde Aerospace Complex until 1968 when he resigned to take the post of President of the Reichstag. Seen as the ideal figure to head an investigation on the accident, Lubke soon became the namesake of the Commission in charge of finding those responsible. A cautious reformer with an opportunistic trend, Lubke had no problem finding names among his successors in Peenemunde, among them many influential Wehrmacht Officers, alongside hundreds of renowned rocket scientists such as Walter Dornberger to throw under the bus. The very public actions of the Lubke Commission helped cement his national profile, which in turn would benefit him considerably in the incoming months, leading to the so called "German False Spring".

Just so there's 100% confirmation, and at the risk of explaining the joke, is it Skeered O' Nothin' meaning Scared of Nothing, as in a response to Dread Nought (fear nothing)?
Because that's so absurd and hilarious it took me a loooong time to understand.

I was going to feature the occupation of Veracruz in part 4 of my King in Yellow series* and it's such perfect synchronicity I'm definitely including the name change as a throwaway detail 😂

Nike Premier Election, 2112

Botticelli Gubernatorial Election

The 2216 United States presidential election is a little less than a year away, and with the filing deadlines in the outer system closing on December 1, the Republicans have a total of 11 main candidates. Incumbent Democratic President Abigail Saylor is seeking his second term and isn't expected to have a significant challenger in the primary. There is no real frontrunner in the race, and the primaries are expected to be a bloodbath. The Republican National Convention is scheduled for July of 2136, but the first primaries are scheduled for December 14, 2135. Of the current 508 states, 497 of them have primaries or caucuses. The other 11 select their candidates for the convention through their own conventions. These are the 11 candidates seeking the Republican nomination with multi-planet/commonwealth campaigns.

Delaney Berger is the U.S. Representative from Ohio's 7th Congressional District. The 4th term congresswoman is very critical of the Saylor administration, which has helped her rise in the ranks of federal politics. In 2212, she established the Outer System Republican PAC to encourage the election of isolationist Republicans in the outer system. Berger is seen as a conservative reformer. She is a staunch opposer of expansionism and supports the creation of a U.S. Office for Intergalactic Business Expansion. She also supports an infrastructure plan for the Saturnian and Jovian systems to make travel between the celestial bodies easier. Berger is seen as a dark-horse candidate, but key endorsements from outer system politicians could propel her to the nomination.

Mackensie Chin is a businesswoman and educator from the state of Kennedy. Chin is the CEO of Galactic, Inc, an space tourism and education business conglomerate. Chin is a Rockefeller Republican, and a big-time donor to moderate republicans in the inner system. She supports an increase in Education spending and a tax cut for poor families. She did not support expansionism until "the United States takes care of their domestic issues". Chin is a very unconventional candidate and isn't expected to make it far in the primaries.

Anthony Cisneros is the Governor of Tempe. Before being elected to public office, he was an officer in the United States Space Force and a policy adviser to the Aphrodite Commonwealth Secretary of Defense. Cisneros is a hardcore conservative, and as governor, he was known for balancing the budget and giving counties control of education standards, infrastructure, and trade. Cisneros was partially responsible for the Aphrodite Commonwealth's withdrawal from the Venusian Order (an international alliance like NATO). He has voiced the support for the United States to completely withdraw from all international alliances and become completely isolationist. Cisneros' goal as president is to revitalize the inner system and make the United States economically independent. He has a lot of support on Venus and Luna. If he gets support in the Jovian system, he could win the nomination.

Aerin Dutremble is a U.S. Senator from Vega. If there is a frontrunner in the 11 member field, it's her. Dutremble is a moderate republican, whose platform is focused on expanding business and opportunity everywhere. She also wants to strengthen international alliances and commit more funding for environmental research and education. She is charismatic and is very popular in the senate. She has lots of support from congressional leaders and leaders in education and foreign affairs. Many Third Way Democrats have also endorsed her candidacy.

Phoebe Ingle is the Mayor of the third-largest city in the United States located on Terra, Salt Lake City. Ingle is one of the youngest in the field, and very innovative, introducing initiatives like creating a Secretary of Interplanetary Trade and an Office of Environmental Research, and increasing funding to look into new energy sources. Ingle has discussed expanding the Supreme Court to one person per celestial body and then putting each on a rotation 9 at a time (with the chief justice always presiding). She has lots of support from younger, more moderate voters in the inner and Saturnian systems.

Megan Kaess is the current premier of Aphrodite and the youngest candidate in the field. She is also a hardcore conservative and supports most of the same initiatives that Cisneros does. She ran because she "believes that a younger candidate needs to be nominated to lead the party into the future," and she doesn't support Cisneros' idea of complete withdrawal from international alliances. However, she isn't expected to be in the race long because Cisneros and Dutremble have the most Venusian support; she's expected to drop out if she doesn't win many delegates before February.

Karleigh Kellogg was a very unexpected candidate. As a matter of fact, when she announced her candidacy, she told her supporters that "she was not expecting to win the nomination". Her stances are all over the place on international relations, weapons, education, business, and environmental policy. However, she has a lot of support from the Asteroid Belt, which is probably why she hasn't withdrawn from the race yet.

Erica-Briana McDaniel is the very popular current Governor of High Plains. She was a former economist and educator before being elected to the U.S. House and was chair of the NRCC in her second term. McDaniel is a populist, who supports business expansion, tax cuts, education funding, and further establishment of research universities in the outer systems, new international alliances, and balancing the budget. McDaniel is one of the frontrunners in the race and has a lot of support from Mars, her home commonwealth of Ishtar, and the outer system.

Joshua Puckett is the Deputy Premier of the Commonwealth of Hellas. Before Puckett served in public office, he was an architect. The cornerstone of his presidential campaign is infrastructure, especially in the asteroid belt and the outer system. Puckett is the least charismatic of the candidates in the field and doesn't have a lot of experience, however, he is said he is going the win the nomination by "being the unconventional candidate".

Alexis Reyes is the oldest candidate in the field. At 81, she hasn't served in political office since the Administration of President Winnefred Rockefeller (2177-2185), but she is the most experienced. Reyes is a moderate Republican of yesterday and has lots of support from old-school moderate Republicans. Reyes has little support outside of Earth, and her support is small spurts across the system.

Reed Watson was the first candidate to declare. He lost re-election to U.S. Congress in the Democratic wave of 2212 and announced a presidential run soon after. He has been critical of the president and is a great campaigner and fundraiser. Watson isn't at the top of the polls but could be a dark-horse candidate. His support for a new and innovative education system has helped him gain support from local leaders, university professors, and academics. He also has a lot of support from his former Republican colleagues in the U.S. House and the Ishtar Commonwealth Senate.

The 1864 United States presidential election in Massachusetts took place on November 8, 1864, as part of the 1864 United States presidential election. Voters chose 12 representatives, or electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president.

Massachusetts voted for the Republican Party candidate, incumbent President Abraham Lincoln, over the three other candidates, Democratic candidate Horatio Seymour, Radical Republican candidate John C. Frémont and Independent candidate George B. McClellan.

Lincoln won the Bay State by a margin of 23.1%.

George McClellan's running mate Edward Everett was born in Massachusetts, more specifically in the town of Dorchester in 1794.

Jesse Jackson (October 8, 1941-June 30, 1974) was an American Baptist minister and political activist. A strong proponent of Civil Rights, Jackson was a very active personality in fighting for an end to racial discrimination. He was a member of the Greenville Eight, making headlines when sitting in a whites-only public library. A key player in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, he led their economic arm Operation Breadbasket. Jackson was ordained as a minister in 1968 and used his devout Christianity to argue for progressive policies.

Unfortunately, this activism got him negative attention from various quarters. On June 30, 1974, he was assassinated by Marcus Chenault, a member of the Black Hebrew Israelites. Chenault saw Christianity as “ruining” African-American society and saw it upon himself to stop “those leading our people astray with a false god” by whatever means possible.

Jackson’s death was heavily mourned by many across America. His son Jonathan is a community activist and politician in Illinois, working hard to continue his father’s legacy.

The Emerald of Britain
- What if the Third Irish Home Rule Bill was successful?

1.png

With the assassination of Carson, and the (reluctant) acceptance by Midleton to Irish Home Rule, the crisis in Ireland peppered out, and merely two days before the First World War rocked the world, Ireland held its first election under the banner of Home Rule. In the preceding months of negotiation, campaigning, and politicking, a clear pattern emerged for the voters. With the reunification of the Irish Parliamentary Party and the All-For-Ireland League, as most Centrist and Center-Left vote left for the Irish Parliamentary, whilst Right-wing and Conservative votes (not merely Unionist) went to the Irish Unionist Party, as Midleton was partially successful in rebranding the Irish Unionist Alliance as a Conservative and Center-Right/Right-Wing party in Ireland during campaigning.

Major topics were brought up during the campaign. The idea of Independence was rejected by all mainstream political parties in Ireland at the time with the exception of Independent Nationalists and Sinn Fein, which under Griffith was still proposing its idea of replicating an Austria-Hungary style solution to Britain and Ireland at the time. However, there were elements within the IPP who believed that with Home Rule now attained, independence as a Dominion of the British Empire was the logical next step and final step forward. However, Redmond who believed Ireland to be the 'Shining Emerald of the United Kingdom' did not believe in full independence, instead opting for regionalism and as much autonomy as possible.

A Constitutionalist to the last, Redmond's promise of greater Rule of Law, and greater legislations in favor of land reform, and aiding the government of Britain in its negotiations against the July Crisis brought in a lot of votes for the IPP, whilst the Irish Unionists ran a bland normal center-right platform with the trappings of Unionism, which to their credit, did garner good amounts of votes. The election was held under the Reform Act of 1884 and its suffrage system, thus making sure only 1 in 2 Irish men could actually vote in the elections, leading the lower amount of votes casted.

IPP won a landslide in the elections, and Redmond became the first Irish Premier of Home Rule Ireland.

2.PNG

The Irish Parliamentary Elections of 1919 was the first election won by the Irish Unionists in Home Rule Ireland. With the Reform Act of 1918-19, millions in Ireland were enfranchised to the vote, and much like other places in Britain at the time, many in the newly enfranchised classes were moving towards the right, and as such, the Irish Unionists, who had successfully rebranded themselves as the Conservatives of Ireland under the leadership of Midleton and subsequently Farnham gained a large voter base. Meanwhile the nature of their opposite party, the IPP also allowed the Unionists to gain a key platform of campaigning.

Redmond's death in 1918 had left Ireland and a good bit of Britain in mourning and he was succeeded as Premier by Dillon. Dillon, despite his successful nature as a Home Ruler in the party, did not prove to be a successful administrative politician, and his policies were often contradictory and showed little understanding of the fundamental economics required for land reforms in Ireland. Furthermore, Dillon's negative attitude towards the British government's attempts at creating a 'fair peace' in Europe was seen with disdain in Ireland, as the First World War and Irish Home Rule had rekindled a sense of British-Irish comradery only seen before the Great Irish Famine. Dillon's incessant public complaints about the diplomatic team of the UK in the ongoing peace process only irritated the Irish voters.

This was evident when the elections were conducted, the Irish Unionists won a majority in the Irish House of Commons, and Baron Farnham was appointed as Premier for Ireland by both the Prime Minister and the King. John Dillon's career in politics and as the leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party was short after that with him being replaced later in the year. The Unionist government's early reign was peaceful and prosperous but was quickly destabilized by the post-WW1 Economic Depression which led to its fall in 1923.

3.PNG

The Post WW1 Depression that hit Europe hit the United Kingdom hard, as one of the greater financers of the war. From 1920 - 1921/22, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was subsumed into a credit crunch that affected its monetary supply and its economic capability to pay off War Debts to individual debtors and state debtors such as the United States of America. Initially, the Unionist government before the Depression proved to be a peaceful and prosperous government, with Ireland experiencing a post-war peace and stability that was much appreciated. But the advent of the Depression and the confused handling of said Depression in Ireland by the Unionists under Farnham raised a lot of opposition against the Unionists.

The IPP's new leader, Devlin proved himself to be a canny orator as well. He appealed to the centrists through his ideals of classical liberalism and his credentials as a constitutionalist home-ruler was ideal for the nationalist voter as well. His personal administrative and management skills meant that the IPP had a very well funded campaign as well. All of these factors from above combined to give the IPP the mandate to form a Third IPP Government in Home Rule Ireland. Meanwhile, the Irish Unionists grimaced as they were forced to simply 53 out of 164 and 13 out of 40 seats in the Irish Parliament at the time. Farnham however would not resign from the leadership and retained the support of key voters and leaders in the party at the time, allowing him to stay in power as leader of the party until 1935.

The mild Depression also allowed for Stephen Gwynn's Irish Center Party to break into the Parliament in a greater and more meaningful manner. Having changed his ideology a bit, the Irish Center Party represented a middle ground between the absolute regionalism of the IPP and the absolute loyalism of the Irish Unionists, basically believing in Social Welfare, Constitutional Monarchism, Moderate Nationalism and Moderate Unionism, essentially created the modern ideology of the Irish Third Way. This new ideology garnered a lot of votes for the ICP from disenchanted Unionist and IPP voters, beginning the slow rise of the ICP on the Irish political scene.

Ishtar Premier election, 2214 (The Final Frontier)

The Commonwealth of Ishtar is located on Venus, and is the center of scientific research and education on the planet. Home to beautiful beaches and mountain ranges, the commonwealth also relies on tourism for its economy. Ishtar also has multiple swing states, and is home to two of the largest cities on the planet: Vega City and Victoria Beach.

The Democrats have been out of power since 2209. Desperate to regain the premiership, the Democratic Premier Campaign Committee (DPCC) set out to recruit someone who could turn out democratic voters in the commonwealth. They chose Commonwealth Senator Briyanna Chambers of Jemison to run. Jemison was a popular Third Way Democrat and the ranking member of the commonwealth senate's judiciary committee. As premier, she wanted to increase free trade and international relations. She also wanted to establish more trade schools and scientific institutions. In order to help her efforts, Chambers chose New Houston Governor Braelee Biddercombe as her running mate, who before her election was an economics professor at New Houston State University. Red Dog and Green Labor Democrats did not believe Chambers was going to help labor unions or discuss environmental protections during her campaign or her premiership, so they recruited someone they thought that could. Trinity Lambert, an environmental activist, and current president of the University of Iwo Jima announced her candidacy soon after. She supported loosened regulations for the creation of unions and the re-establishment of the commonwealth's Department of Environmental Protection. To unify the ticket between the Red Dogs and Green Labor, Lambert selected U.S. Representative Everton Massey of Magellan to be her running mate. The debates were very spirited, with Chambers and Lambert both winning and losing two. The primaries were very close, but Chambers' win in the state of North Vega ultimately got her enough votes to win the nomination.
Untitled drawing (3).jpg

Incumbent Premier Vaughn Sutton was ineligible to run for a second five-year term, and Republicans wanted to hold on to the seat. The Deputy Premier, Shiloh Barrett almost immeadiately declared her candidacy. Barrett was very soft spoken, however, knew how to run a ground campaign. A Rockefeller Republican, she was chosen to unite the party ticket in what was expected to be a very close election. Barrett supported the expansion of small business opportunities, more infrastructure projects, and investments in charter schools that would champion the sciences. Barrett chose a more conservative running mate, Commonwealth Representative Gavin Hostetler of High Plains to balance out the ticket. Vega Governor Andreana Oliveira Rogers was the next to announce. Oliveira Rogers was a hardcore conservative who supported "union busting" and the privatization of education". She also wanted Ishtar to become more isolated when it came to international affairs. Rogers was a very charismatic speaker and a very unconventional candidate. She also showed that in her running mate pick of Businessman Wyatt Claxton. Commonwealth Senator Sophie Shivers of New Houston was a member of the American Taxpayers wing. Shivers was the youngest in the field at 35, and probably the most unique candidate of the trio. She supported the abolition of business regulations, free trade, school choice, and giving businesses the choice on making their own energy regulations. She chose expierience Commonwealth Secretary of Business Enrique Lopez as her running mate, which boosted her in the polls. Much of the race was on the ground campaigning as Borth Barrett and Oliveira Rogers refused to debate. Oliveira Rogers' unconventional message and charismatic speaking style ultimately won her the nomination.
Untitled drawing (2).jpg

Everyone knew the premiership was going to come down to a few swing states. Both candidates spents much of their time in New Houston and High Plains, which had quite a few electoral votes to win. Chambers did not have democrats unified behind the ticket, which hurt her in the long run. Her great preparation for the only debate of the general was not really a match for the style of Oliveira Rogers. Although, Chambers arguably had more experienced, and seemed like a better candidate, she did not even turn out enough Democrats to win the popular vote. Oliveira Rogers narrowly won both High Plains and New Houston, and ultimately the premiership.
