SoldierOfChrist: Norwood Mackie
  • Norwood Mackie was a Texan Army officer, Jesuit chaplain, and statesman who served as the 31st President of the Republic of Texas from July 1954 until his assassination in 1969. In Texas, he is commonly referred to as Father Mackie, or by his initials, ANM.

Mackie was born in Benthuysen, Hunt County in 1916. He was the fourth son of Andrew Mackie, a clothier, and Marian Short Mackie, a midwife. Both his parents were devout Roman Catholics. His grandfather Thomas had migrated from Ulster to Texas in 1873 to work on the railroads. At age 17, Mackie graduated from Our Lady of the Assumption Seminary School in Bishop and joined the Society of Jesus. In 1935, he graduated Saint Paul Commissary College and was designated a chaplain in the Army of the Republic of Texas. From 1936 to 1938, he served military congregations in Nacogdoches and Bird’s Fort. Upon the outbreak of the Second Continental War, Mackie was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and sent to the Trans-Mississippi front to fight against the Anglo-Americans. He received 17 medals, decorations, and awards, including the Texas Valor Cross, and ended the war with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was promoted to full Colonel in 1946.

As Colonel, Mackie was the Deputy Director of Army Intelligence before transferring to the Quartermaster Department. In February 1948, Mackie was appointed Deputy Commissioner for Veterans Pensions by President Lazard. He was removed from his post May of that same year after being accused of Communist sympathies, and was recommended for ten-months instruction at l’École de guerre in Paris.

Mackie returned to Texas to find a greatly changed political environment. The reactionary Lazard had been ousted in favor of the much more amenable General Alphonse E. Ames, who promised an end to Old Guard paranoia in favor of “Honor, Progress, and Bread”. He restructured the steel and shipbuilding industries, raised wages for agrarian laborers, and formed a provisional committee for revisions to the Official Texas Bible. Selected by Ames as a potential protégé to cultivate, Mackie received the prestigious appointment of Provost of St. Paul Commissary College. Following the downfall of Ames ally James P. Thomas, Mackie ascended to the office of Secretary of State in 1953. He came to represent the conservative tendency in the military, and clashed frequently with the President.

In the end, Ames proved to be a bitter disappointment to both the political Catholic elite, who found him atrociously liberal and insufficiently pious, and the peasant-labor left, who resented his patrician roots and felt that he did not go far enough with his reforms, particularly land reform. Foreign perceptions were no more flattering; on a state visit to Houston-on-the-Brazos in May 1951, French Prime Minister Jeanneret derisively referred to Ames as a “sycophantic little gargoyle”. The officer corps quickly grew tired of their former hero’s chameleon antics, and talk of a coup was in the air as early as 1952. With no single faction detesting him enough to overthrow him, Ames clung to power for another two years before the pot boiled over.

The Texan coup d’état of 1954 was relatively bloodless, and Ames was placed under house arrest. Four hours later, Andrew Norwood Mackie was unanimously elected President by the State Council for Constitutional Reconstruction in the dining hall of the Presidential Palace.

    InfernoMole: Bogdan Dimitrov
  • "Bogdan Dimitrov, born on April 11 of 2079, is one of the most influential figures in modern art. The sole child of two Orbital workers, Lara Chernenko and Stoyan Dimitrov, Bogdan Dimitrov has single-handedly created an entire new style, a whole new movement of art, directly tied to the unforgiving expanse of space and the issues Orbitals face while living on space stations. Dimitrov's work is characterized by heavy neo-chiaroscuro, combined with a refusal to use 'warm' or 'cold' color schemes, instead utilizing a 'light' or 'dark' color scheme, giving life to cold, empty chambers of space stations, cosmic objects or 'inner demons'..."
~ Excerpt from New Zealandian documentary Art Beyond Earth – Bogdan Dimitrov and the Movement of Orbitalism, dated July 2145

"This man [Dimitrov] is amazing. The bust [of Ramzan Kadyrov] that I commissioned, it's very accurate, distinctly classical in its depiction, incredibly Roman, incredibly monumental, but it has a tinge of modernity that makes it distinctly... you know, Dimitrov's."
~ Zurab Kadyrov, Governor of Chechnya, about the Bust of a Father, 12 September 2132

"Y'now, he was always a rather... detached man. Painfully so. I guess that's what surviving a dozen explosions, gas leaks and shots to the head does to a man. But, unlike most people I knew, Bogdan was pretty durable. Always came out on top, or so."
~ Leonid Sudakov about Bogdan Dimitrov, November 2143

"Bogdan Dimitrov was not just a man! He was the scion of the space stations that contained us, the father of Orbital independence! And those who killed him - the rotten corporate businessmen of the Three Worlds will pay for this injustice!"
~ Excerpt from Guust Sartorij's speech during the Axion Protests, 17 July 2148

  • By the last decades of the 20th century, OGAS had assumed most major functions of the state economy in the various Union Republics. But the Glushkovites planned to go further still. From its inception, OGAS was envisioned as an all-encompassing utility in society, and breakthrough advances in the field of cybernetics and predictive modeling allowed the Politburo to fully explore its military and security applications. Collaborating with the Chinese State Planning Commission and their South American counterparts at Synco, the great minds of the Soviet Union constructed through socialist diligence and science the most advanced surveillance state in human history. What happened next seems inevitable now with the benefit of hindsight, but few could have predicted it at the time.

    gap80: The Wet Bandits
  • The Wet Bandits
    (because it’s Christmas Eve)

    gqsCOVP.png

(I’m ignoring Home Alone 4 because everyone else does)

The Wet Bandits was a duo of home burglars and petty thieves whom plagued the residential areas surrounding the American city of Chicago, Illinois with a series of burglaries from 1987 until their apprehension on Christmas Eve, 1990. After escaping from prison in Illinois in December 1992, they were found in Central Park, New York City, only a few days later. The circumstances of their 1990 and 1992 arrests are shadowed in mystery.

Most information on their pre-1990 actions come from testimony from their 1991 and 1993 trails. Harry L. Lyme and Marvin “Marv” Merchants first met in 1984 and soon began to burglar wealthy and middle-income houses across northern Illinois, along with several other crimes, including one attempted kidnapping and one attempted homicide (both disputed). Primarily with crowbars, Lyme and Marchants would steal as much as they could from homes, drive to a nearby state, and sell the items at various sellers, both legal and black market, for cash. Lyme stole a painter’s van in 1989 out of which to work. On October 2, 1990, Lyme purchased a police officer’s costume from a Halloween outfit store in Kankakee, and began impersonating an officer in mid-November.

Beginning in June 1990, during their Fourth-of-July vacation burglary spree, Merchants created the duo’s “calling card” – causing extensive damage by leaving the water running in a clogged kitchen sink at every house they robbed. At his 1991 trial Merchants proudly stated “All the great ones leave their mark!”). According to his 1993 trial, Merchants apparently attempted to rebrand the duo as “the Sticky Bandits” to no success.

Their criminal career initially came to an end on the night of December 24, 1990. At 9:42, Chicago police received a phone call from the residence of John Murphy, the caller saying his house was being robbed. Upon police arrival 7 minutes later, the two men were found unconscious in the home’s kitchen with multiple wounds. During the subsequent investigation, it was discovered that John Murphy was away on vacation at the time and had not called the police. The police concluded the phone was from an anonymous tipper whom has still not be identified.

Lime and Merchants spent the next six months (December 1990 – June 1991) in the hospital, recuperating from multiple wounds before standing trial. Lime had second-degree burns on his head and hand, a bruised ribcage bone, broken nose cartilage from some form of blunt force trauma, and a concussion; Merchants had wounds on his feet, a deep cut on one foot that required a tetanus shot, first-degree burns to his face, broken nose cartilage from some form of blunt force trauma, and multiple concussions. Merchants would later describe his stay in the hospital as “the most comfy six months of my entire life; I was pampered, I got a pretty nurse, and I had all the Jell-O I wanted!”

During the 1991 trial, the two criminals maintained their right to remain silent, refusing to explain the cause of their wounds, with Lime repeatedly being almost held in contempt of court for telling Merchants to “shut up.” While Lime stated that he did not know whom hit them with a shovel, Marvin’s sole explanation for their silence was that “how we ended up here is just too embarrassing to say.”

Only 14 months after beginning their sentences at the same Illinois prison, Lime and Merchants escaped from jail in December 1992. Days later, on Christmas Eve, the store Duncan’s Toy Chest was robbed. After another anonymous tip from a pay phone reported the store’s robber’s whereabouts, adding “look for fireworks.” Several minutes later, NYCP arrived just as fireworks began firing. At their source, a wounded Lime and Merchants were found covered in tar and seeds and being attacked by pigeons. Merchants immediately confessed to robbing the store, despite Lime’s attempt to get him to “shut up,” and were soon sent to a hospital for multiple wounds.

Lime and Merchants spent eight months in the hospital this time around. Their injuries were similar to the ones received in 1990, along with Merchants experiencing some form of electrocution. Yet in their 1993 trial, Lime and Merchants again refused to explain their wounds (with Lime having burns and bruises, and Merchants having even worse wounds). Merchants only offered the notion that “you [the police] wouldn’t believe us at all even if we told you.” Nevertheless, because Merchants was more compliant with the police, he was given a lighter sentence, much to the annoyance of Lime. This time, they were sent to separate prisons. In 2011, Merchants was released from prison on parole for good behavior; as of 2014, he resides in Arizona, where he says he is “happy outside the US; I don’t think I’ll ever go back to that country.” In 2015, Lime again escaped from prison. His current whereabouts are unknown, and he has been #15 on the US Marshals Most Wanted Fugitives list since 2016.

    Merry Holidays, Everybody!

    SoldierOfChrist: Unnamed space opera universe
  • Snippets from an unnamed space opera universe born of too many hours of playing Stellaris.

The Ordeal Wars, also known as the Tribulations or the Fragmentation Era, were a series of conflicts in the 23rd century that last roughly from 2198 to 2295, though arguably peripheral conflicts began as early as 2161, following first contact with living extrasolar xenian civilizations. They involved all major human territories and several xenian entities, and mostly pitted the United Nations and associated nations against a variety of reactionary anti-xenian socio-political movements and insurgencies that arose in the Outer Sol System and on human colonies in the Alpha Centauri, Tau Ceti, and Epsilon Eridani Systems. Over time, the political aspects of the conflict gradually lost their focus, with many worlds descending into perpetual warlordism and anarchy. Tens of billions perished as countless settlements and stations were lost to war flight, piracy, ethnic cleansing, nuclear holocaust, starvation, exposure to vacuum, and communicable diseases, both human and xenian-transmitted.

After an escalation during the 2280s, the Wars finally came to an end in 2295 with the complete scouring of several major insurgent faction base planets by the UN Navy. Intermittent conflicts on worlds in Alpha Centauri and Tau Ceti continue to this day, though the UN Security Council considers them separate because their territories are no longer under United Nations jurisdiction. The UN emerged from the fire battered but triumphant, and had thirty years of relative peace before the Semyaza Empire invasion of the 2320s.

Humanity in the 23rd and 24th centuries is still very much centered around Sol, with most major political and military figures of the UN hailing from the Inner System. United Nations Security Command is based on Mars, and the bulk of UN Navy recruits are from Terra, and Mars, and the Main Belt. Human colonists in other systems have developed into a strange and hardy bunch; some schools of thought in the UN don’t consider them completely human at all. UN associated governments in the three colonial systems range from the Laer Labour Compact, an automated singularitarian dictatorship, to the Trimarian State, a Catholic salvationist sacerdotal state.

Below are some personalities and a faction of the last Ordeal Wars.
    --

Phraya Sonthi Kittikasem, also known as Nay Pisac, was a former Thai gendarme colonel and prominent pirate during the Fragmentation Era, who terrorized the Main Belt and Outer System in the 2270s and 80s, specifically targeting mineral and water transport vessels. Considered the most powerful and successful pirate of all time, he personally commanded over 900 vessels from his flagship Ksatriy Thawda at his empire’s peak, manned by approximately 600,000 men, women, and children. Nominally a member of the reactionary-revolutionary Kommandam Clique, Kittikasem was a nation unto himself, openly collaborating with the UN when it suited his interests. He was pardoned numerous times, and even received a commendation from UNMC for his actions against Last International holdouts in the Neptunian trojans. Though many times wealthier than most other pirates of his time, Kittikasem adamantly refused to retire, and eventually ran out of goodwill with the UN; in 2286, newly-appointed UN Secretary-General Zhang Lianbo made it his personal mission to hunt the shrewd pirate down.

Kittikasem was captured at last in 2290 while docked on Storge Station in the Datura Cluster, and he and his crew were brought back to Mars to face judgement. His behavior at his trial was described by observers as “caustic”, “wholly unrepentant”, and “downright creepy”. Sentenced to life imprisonment on a lunar detention station, he died in 2303 under unclear circumstances after being ejected from a maintenance airlock during his designated calisthenics period. His death was officially ruled an accident after a cursory investigation.
    --

Donovan Bland was an American industrialist, businessman, and art collector who served as Director-General of the UN Reserve Bank for over twenty years. From 2299 to 2304, he was recognized as the richest human alive, and the richest individual in the Sol System, with a net worth of over 450 billion terras. He owned an extensive art collection, which included 782,101 individual pieces by human and Sotha artists. Initially studying avionics, Bland served for three years in the UN Naval Air Force as a communications specialist before attending business school at Overton University on Phobos. He worked as an executive at Selesia SA and Blue Mountain before joining the Ceres Clean Water Corporation as CEO. During the 2290s, he was director-general of Mascon, the UN-owned telecommunications amalgamate.

As a personable, unimaginative apparatchik, Bland was the perfect candidate to direct the UNRB. Despite his modest public persona, Bland was highly influential in determining UN economic and trade policy in the early 24th century, loosening the intricate web of licensing laws, regulations, and accompanying red tape required to form new enterprises under UN jurisdiction, and issuing substantive loans to major Sotha burgher concerns. Bland’s efforts to foster economic cooperation with the xenians were completely undone by the Semyaza invasion, which resulted in the near-total subjugation and consumption of the meager Sotha species, as well as the quarantine of UN-controlled space. Overworked and shattered, Bland resigned and retreated to his private complex in Voltaire City, rarely making any public appearances until shortly before his death in 2344.

Lieutenant Ania Beczała was a Polish-born United Nations Naval Aviator who was killed in the Fourth Ordeal War. She was posthumously honored by with a 15-meter bronze statue of her as Bronte in her hometown of Królewiec, Poland, and the IV SEF Air Proving Ground was dedicated as the Ania Beczała Aviation Training College. The Długi Staw in Królewiec was renamed the Ania Beczała Memorial Lake.

The daughter of agricultural data archivists, Beczała married actuary student Konkordia Ostrowska and attended trade college for a year before enlisting in the UN Navy. She initially aimed to join the Marines, but failed to meet their stringent physical fitness standards. Instead, she joined the Naval Air Force. After receiving her flight combat training on Eudoxia Station (Terra-Luna L2), Beczała attended Space Aviation University in Elysium. She was posted to the UNNS Zenobia on assignment to Fighter Squadron 558, where she flew the F-241 Ziz. Her callsign was “Piorun”. She deployed with the IV Solar Expeditionary Force to Caamano in Eridani in July 2286, as part of the final UN offensive against the Caamano Security Front for Popular Development. According to squadron archivist Afonso Ikeda, Beczała achieved her first kill on 4 September 2286, shooting down a Camaanese Sefi 109. During the campaign, she flew thirty-nine flights and participated in eleven air combats with enemy fighters.

In 2287, Lieutenant Beczała was permanently assigned Second Aviator of the UNNS Caiman, the cruiser on which she would spend the last two years of her life. At approximately 0300 hours on 26 October 2289, the UNNS Caiman was lost with all hands in interstellar space en route to Tau Ceti. Though several groups claimed responsibility, the true perpetrators of this terrorist act have never been satisfactorily identified.
    --

What would later become the People’s Vengeance Councils were first formed in the early 23rd century by colonists on several isolated worlds in Eridani, as a process for the redressal of grievances both real and perceived. It went like this: after a cataclysm, the survivors would arm themselves, organize into popular cadres, paint their eyelids with ash, neatly wrap the portraits and photographs of their dead loved ones in bundles of black cloth, and march to the capital with grief in their hands and rage in their hearts. It was all very civilized, and rarely did it end up that there were more in the hanging carts than there were in the crowds watching the hangings.

With the outbreak of the Third Ordeal War, the principle remained the same, only the scale of retribution changed. The collapse of the Interstellar Revolutionary Union caused the scattering of its leadership, and some like Major Combat Adalet Tekin found their way to Eridani. Establishing a new base on the planet of Astarte, Tekin was soon joined by several of her compatriots and began the work of rebuilding the movement. Coopting the locals’ unique brand of justice, Tekin introduced the concept of a “permanent tribunal” against the United Nations in the Communiqué of 1 July: the governments of the UN and its local representatives are guilty of neglecting the will and security of the people, thus its mandate is void in every system and the members of the UNSC should submit themselves for trial immediately.

The movement itself was decentralized, and while it is doubtful that individual cadres closely followed Tekin’s ideological line, the PVCs filled a power vacuum in the system and waged a successful guerrilla war against the UN for thirty-seven years, only being defeated when UNMC directed its full attention towards reclaiming Eridani after the Caamano Liberation. Most senior PVC commanders were killed or captured between 2286 and 2291. Tekin herself is supposed to have escaped Astarte, though UN historians expressed doubts to the validity of her survival, as most of her lieutenants claimed to not have spoken to her in person since 2262.

lord caedus: 2016 Hawaii general election
  • Mele Kalikimaka! It's an X-in-Canada Christmas, this time going back to the roots of the project- the most recent election in one province of in an ATL of an ATL.

    -------------------------------------------------

The 2016 Hawaii general election was the 22nd election in the province of Hawaii since the islands' responsible government was restored following the Second World War. It was held on April 17, 2016 to elect all 51 members of the Legislative Assembly of Hawaii. The incumbent New Democratic Party (NDP) government, led by Premier David Ige, had won in a landslide in the previous election held in 2012, winning a majority of the popular vote as well as 42 out of 51 seats. Both Ige and the NDP entered the election with high approval ratings after implementing popular environmental programs and raising housing subsidies for families that had been curtailed under the previous Liberal government.

The official opposition, the Liberals had spent the life of the previous assembly recovering and re-evaluating the party's message and focus after nine years in power. Their selection of freshman MLA Beth Fukumoto (who was only 31 when selected) was seen by many as a conscious decision to shed the baggage of both former Premiers Lindle and Hanneman, whose internecine fighting had weakened the party after its second election in 2007. Fukumoto, unlike either of her predecessors, had not aligned herself with either faction, whose rivalry stemmed ultimately from the influx of members of the remnant of the National Party into the party in the 1990s. With the party's caucus devastated by the devastating loss in 2012, Fukumoto's reformation of the party's message ran into very little resistance from either the left-leaning members or the conservative former Nationals.

The Aloha ʻĀina Party (AAP), the third major party in the province, had not won representation in the assembly and continued to rely on the popularity of its founder and leader, Dennis "Bumpy" Kanahele, among the native Hawaiian population for political relevancy. As part of Kanahele's effort for the party to return to the Assembly, the party had shifted its messaging to focus more on environmental stewardship and government transparency rather than issues like native land rights. Although the Ige government's policies appealed to many Aloha ʻĀina voters, the NDP's failure to enact meaningful campaign finance reform and the push to increase agricultural production resulting in an increase in recruiting workers from mainland Canada and Asia resulted in most opting to remain with the AAP.

With both Ige and the NDP having high favorability ratings, the NDP were always the favorites to win. Fukumoto and the Liberal campaign managed expectations for their supporters, and pushed for "keeping the government accountable" by reducing the NDP's caucus and possibly reducing it to a minority. While the initial stages of the campaign had several polls pointing to a repeat of 2012, by the time election day came around, the Liberals' message had seemed to have landed for many Liberal-leaning voters who had voted for the NDP in 2012.

    8GnSy90.png

Very few observers were surprised by the NDP winning another majority. The Liberals, unburdened by factional infighting and hitting their stride in pointing to missteps by the government, managed to gain six seats, reducing the government's majority to 11. The AAP again failed to win a seat in the assembly, although they did increase their share of the the popular vote. Despite whispers that he would step aside if he again failed to win a seat, Kanahele announced he would continue to serve as Aloha ʻĀina leader and "keep the government honest" outside of the assembly.

While Premier Ige will likely not call an election before 2020, the Liberal Party has already been laying the groundwork for their next campaign, highlighting the negligible impact the Ige government has had on Hawaii's homeless population and the high rate of cost-of-living increase in the Aloha Province relative to the rest of Canada. While the technocratic Ige has promised that his government will unveil its plan to reduce the cost-of-living increase to a level comparable to other provinces, polling indicates that his third time facing voters may be more challenging for him than his first two campaigns.

    -------------------------------------------------

[*]Like OTL, Hawaii was placed under martial law during World War II, although *here* it lasted the whole war instead of ending in late 1944.
[*]Not mentioned in the backstory is that the National Party is a combination of the pre-Democratic Revolution Republican Party and Union Nationale, a right-wing machine party who dominated local politics and who collapsed after a political revolution in the province that changed the local political scene to be more left-wing.
[*]The map is actually the OTL Hawaiian House one. I couldn't get Dave's Redistricting App to not crash after a few minutes and corrupt the file I was working on, which scuttled my plan for both a larger assembly (I was going to have it with around 60 seats) and for another non-canon provincial election.

It skips to roughly 1600 years later, London is under attack from large flying saucers, the British military being unable to fend them off. A soldier is running through a park in London, extraterrestrials on foot, in hot pursuit. The soldier trips and falls at the base of an old oak tree. The soldier pleads for help from God, from anyone who will listen. As the aliens approach, they are blasted away from a large beam of electricity. From behind the soldier, a man draped in robes with a long white beard, and a wooden staff pointed directly at the extraterrestrials. The old man defeats all the aliens and helps the young soldier up. The old man introduces himself as Merlin Ambrosius and says that it's time for Arthur to return before pausing and noting that the young person before him does bare a great deal of likeness to Arthur and proclaims that they will begin their training.

    SoldierOfChrist: California Social Democratic Party
  • The California Social Democratic Party is the founding and ruling party of the California Democratic Republic, having governed California since its inception in 1948. The first incarnation of the CSDP was a revolutionary socialist party founded by Methodist minister and Marxist theoretician J. Stitt Wilson, succeeding the moribund Californian Socialist Party. Wilson's death and the subsequent crackdown on the socialist movement by Hiram Johnson and his proxies led to the dissolution of the original party; many of its leaders went on to become founding members of the modern party, including Dorothy Ray Healey, the first Premier of the CDR. The party in its current form was conceived as a mass movement adhering to democratic centralist Marxist-Leninist principles, and triumphed over the old Republican Party in the Californian Civil War (1946-1948).

With over 3.5 million members and counting, the CSDP is the largest communist party in North America today. John Payan Furtado has been General Secretary of the Party and Premier of California since 2005.

There were communist parties IOTL under that label, and as with all things continuity is important.

Francisco D. Dutton is a Californian trade union leader, politician, and senior leader of the CSDP, serving as Vice Premier of California since 2013. The son of an Anglo father and a Mexican mother, Dutton grew up among the farm fields and grange chapters of Central California, and decided early on that an agricultural life was not for him. His father died when he was 13, and he moved with his mother's family to Oakland, where he worked for the Oakland Iron & Steel Corporation. Dutton began his political career as a trade unionist, diligently rising through the ranks of the California Steelworkers Union until he became Chairman in 1989. From there, he maneuvered himself into Chairmanship of the California Trade Union Council, and was appointed Minister of Labor in 1995 by Premier J.H. Martinez. He joined the Secretariat of the CSDP that same year.

As a member of the first generation to grow up in the aftermath of the Californian Revolution, Dutton represents the dominant conservative faction of the Party, though he is not wholly opposed to reform in principle. A consummate political survivor, Dutton has generally supported the policies of Premier Payan Furtado and his predecessors, except when they have moved towards cybernetics and the gradual erosion of CTUC influence in economic policy. In recent years he has emerged as a potential successor to Payan Furtado, who has hinted at plans to retire in 2018. Opponents of Dutton's candidacy point to his abrasive personal style and adamant opposition to the implementation of new economic management systems– which he feels would permanently compromise the position of the CTUC. His primary rival and fellow Vice Premier Jacqueline Brown has on occasion referred to him as "Rip Van Winkle" for his tendency to harp on his past accomplishments.

Was watching Forrest Gump while browsing Chat, and couldn't help but think, "Run Forrest, Run!" would be one hell of a campaign slogan.

  • Jacqueline Brown is a Californian Vice Premier and senior leader of the California Social Democratic Party. Relatively young, energetic, and fully committed to confronting the obstacles faced by the CDR in the 21st century, most observers consider Brown a star within the Party with little room left to rise. She previously held the posts of Minister of Education and Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers. She also chaired the Neubauer Policy Institute, a nonpartisan research group, from 2007 to 2009.

A graduate of LAHU, Brown started working for the Pioneer Youth League in 1982, where she worked alongside contemporaries Rebecca Yee (Minister of Minorities) and Jay Whittier (Chairman of the San Diego Executive Committee). By the age of twenty-six, Brown had become First Secretary of the entire Southern California League.

As a protégé of local institution Chairman John Landerman, Brown advanced rapidly in the L.A. Party, becoming its youngest First Secretary since 1956, and the youngest member of the CSDP Secretariat in history. When Landerman retired in 2000, Brown succeeded him as Chair of the L.A. Executive Committee. She was the second city leader in California to implement a full municipal Sybil network, increasing labor productivity by over 25%. In a speech in 2002, then-Premier Edward Robiner lauded her as "the herald of the new socialist millennium"– a prophetic sentiment to members of the previously marginal Youth League clique. Though Brown's post-L.A. career has been less groundbreaking, support for her and cybernetics as the wave of the future has swelled in recent years, making her a strong favorite to become the next General Secretary of the CSDP and Premier of California.
