    Infrastructure: Confederation Bridge
  • 1ZPtoth.png

Confederation Bridge is a stayed-cable bridge which spans the Long Island Sound to connect the New England provinces of Connecticut and Long Island. Given Long Island's isolation from mainland New England, ideas of a bridge have circulated since the turn of the century, with the highly successful Brooklyn Bridge connecting Long Island with the United States and fuelling a large economic boom in western Long Island. Partially in fear of Long Island drifting to far towards the United States and partially because the National Highway System was under its earliest consideration, the first Long Island Sound bridge was commissioned in 1938. Planning and construction took ten years to complete, given the extreme length of the bridge (31km) and to withstand the conditions of Long Island Sound. The bridge would last until 2010, when it was deemed structurally insufficient and closed to the public. This was before the planned replacement bridge, the current Confederation Bridge, was due to be opened in early 2012. With the unexpected closure of the bridge, construction was accelerated on the bridge to open it nearly eight months early. It would close for three months after Hurricane Irene passed close to the bridge and caused the collapse of a span after a ship was blown into the pillar holding it up. Since the bridge was closed, there were no cars on the causeway at the time.

The bridge today is a vital link between Long Island and Connecticut, with nearly one hundred thousand cars crossing it a day. The primary users of the bridge are commuters, with the Long Island towns of Setauket, Rocky Point, Calverton, and Centreville considered suburbs of New Haven, and they are considered part of that city's LMRPA.

Currently, New England Rail is constructing a bridge parallel to Confederation Bridge to link with Long Island's Rail network. Previously, a rail link existed with the original bridge, but low traffic and usage led to it being removed from the plans for the bridge's reconstruction. After Prime Minister Kirk's Infrastructure for the 21st Century plan passed in 2012, New England Rail was granted £35 billion to construct the bridge, with two rail links and power cables. Some of the money would also be used to do limited repairs and maintenance to Confederation Bridge.

    New Haven Railroad
  • szmR8pB.png

I'm not sure if I posted this on AH.com before, I vaguely remember it, but I can't find it. Regardless, the above is the webpage for the New Haven Railroad, the largest and only remaining non-heritage private passenger railway line in operation in New England. All other railway traffic is handled by New England Rail, or various city and metropolitan area networks. The New Haven Railroad also offers freight service, and has a partnership with New England Rail for trackage rights north of Springfield. I have a started wikibox on the New Haven Railroad, so this certainly won't be the last time it's brought up in this thread.

    Energy Grid
  • First off, thank you everyone for the support!! It honestly means a lot!! <3 I'd respond to everyone but it's best to just move forward. Thank you to everyone, and all the new readers too!!

Secondly, here is a map of New England's National Grid. Power Generation is a mixture of heavily regulated private industries, government-owned (municipal) authorities, Provincially-owned authorities, and finally the National Grid, which is run by the Government of New England! All plants and stations under its control are property of the Federal Government. With very very few exceptions, all power generation must go on the National Grid, and there are only a handful of independent grids (not shown on here) of which the National Grid is not responsible for.

    Culture: Rule, Britannia (Video Game)
  • Rule, Britannia is a game developed by computer science students at the University of New England—Boston in 1987 as a part of their coursework. The game became highly popular in the school because of its upbeat music, and dynamic gameplay. It's popularity led it to be published in 1988 after being further refined, and it was widely distributed in New England, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, becoming an international best seller. The game itself depicts the British Empire for a fifty-year time period between 1890 and 1940. The player must manage the British Empire throughout this period, constantly growing it, ensuring they do not go bankrupt, and waging warfare against other nations. The game was groundbreaking in its scripted events, combined with dynamically generated events, along with artificial intelligence of several nations (Russia, France, Germany), with with whom the player must compete against. The game only allows action to be taken in Africa and Asia, although Europe is shown on the map. The play will lose the game if they are surpassed in power by one of the three rival nations for two consecutive years. The player wins by lasting all 50 years on top.

The game was distributed on 3-inch floppy disks, and over eight million copies were sold. This record was not defeated until the release of StarCraft in 1998.

    Sports: National Hockey League
  • pBByzqt.png

The National Hockey League is a professional ice hockey league in North America, currently composed of 32 teams: 15 American, 13 Canadian, and 4 New English. The NHL is the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and the biggest sports league in Canada and New England, and a major one in the United States. The league is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec where it was founded. Nearly one fourth of the league's players come from outside the three countries represented in the league, but Canada dominates with almost half of all players coming from that country.

With the growing popularity of the sport in the United States, the 2020 NHL League Expansion has been approved, which will add four new teams from the United States, one for each division. The planned locations of expansion teams are; Charlotte, North Carolina (Atlantic), Columbus, Ohio (Metropolitan), Knoxville, East Tennessee (Central), and San Francisco, Hamilton (Pacific). Despite repeated attempts to move teams out of Canada, the League has blocked all of these requests due to the consistently packed stadiums and strong merchandise sales from Canadian franchises.

The highest attendance in the league belongs to the Los Angeles Kings, and the lowest is the Westchester Sharpshooters, which competes in the same media market as the Hartford Whalers, Brooklyn Islanders, New York Rangers, and New Jersey Devils. The Sharpshooters are currently in the process of finding a location to move to, with Miami and New Orleans being the primary target cities.

The Montreal Canadiens have the most titles with 28, and the most recent champions were the Tampa Bay Lightning, who defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins.

    Sports: North American Football League
  • 8vPOqNj.png

The North American Football League is the premier league for Gridiron football in the world, composed of 36 teams from four countries, divided equally between the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. The NFL is the most popular sporting league in the United States, the second most popular after Ice Hockey in New England, the third most popular after Baseball and Ice Hockey in Canada, and the fourth most popular in the United Kingdom after Association football, Tennis, Cricket, and motor racing. The NAFL has a 21-week regular season running from early August to late January, with each teams playing 20 games and having one bye week. There is a two week October break where no games are played, and acts as a league-wide bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, seven teams from each conference (four divisional winners and three wild card teams) advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament culminating in the Superbowl, where the two champions of the NFC and the AFC compete over the Grey Cup.

The main body of the NFL was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, before renaming itself to the National Football League in 1922. The NFL agreed to merge with the American Football League in 1966, and the first Super Bowl was contested between the two leagues. The merger was complete for the 1970 season, and the NFL continued to retain its name for another eighteen years, before the National Football League and the Canadian/New England Football League agreed to a merger to form the North American Football League. The Grey Cup, the trophy presented to the former winners of the CNEFL became the main prize of the Super Bowl for the 1988 season, which it has remained since. The NAFL has the highest attendance of any sporting league in the world, and the Super Bowl is the largest sporting event in the world, breaking records almost every year. Ten Super Bowls hold the top-10 most watched North American television broadcasts in 2016.

The Boston Bulldogs have won eight Super Bowls and have thirteen Grey Cups, making them the most successful franchise in the league, but the Green Bay Packers have nine NFL titles and four Grey Cups. The current NAFL champions are the New York Giants who defeated the Boston Bulldogs in Super Bowl LII.

The Overwatch League is a professional eSports league for the video game Overwatch, developed by Blizzard Entertainment, which also oversees the League. Set up like a traditional sports league, it runs in a seasonal format with a playoff period to determine the champion. The inaugural season saw 14 teams enter representing nine countries. Regular season play began in January 2018 and will run through June of 2018. Stage 1 of 5 has already completed play, and the Stage 1 champions were the Saigon Dragons who defeated the Vancouver Splendour.
