It's 1956 and no-one bothered to contest President Hiss' re-election.

This is fun and all but come on with the black boxes

When it detracts from the overall quality of your work and makes it visually unappealing, I don't see why?

I mean, if you really don't want to spoil it, you can just go with the 'TBD'. Sure a black box hides whatever the author doesn't want to spoil, but at the same time if it ultimately detracts from the quality of the box because of how visually unappealing it is, then what's the point of including it?

Or just let it be spoiled.

I mean, and not to be harsh, but I'm less inclined to care about a box series if the author is so nervous about 'spoiling' it they'll ruin their boxes with pointless black bars. Yeah, I suppose maybe Rand Paul becoming President or whatever is something you don't want to spoil, but to be honest I'd be more interested seeing that and finding out how he became President. And if it's 'TBD', it at least captures in some sense that those boxes are being updated along with the incoming results.

Now, this isn't specifically aimed at the Paul Boxes, as I am curious about those, but it's more broadly indicative of a really bad habit that wikibox makers have fallen into, one that isn't taking into consideration how a wikibox looks, which given the purpose of this thread and graphic design in general (because, and lets not kid ourselves, this is a form of graphic design) is rather a big issue in my book.

What's the point of all the blacked boxes? If you're hiding information, why even bother make the box and displaying it?

You guys don't get it

The ugly black box is the next President

Here's an assortment of infoboxes from a project that didn't really get off the ground. Enjoy.

What ever happened to the McMullin?
Evan McMullin should have lost votes with two other conservative candidates running. He should've dropped out. He did neither.
S3vaQoX.png

Technically, he did lose votes in Idaho, but made large gains in Utah. With Paul splitting Trump's support, some conservatives in Utah voted for McMullin as the lesser of 4 evils, and despite a small gain of votes for Clinton, the flocking of "true conservatives" away from Trump and Paul allowed McMullin to grab the state by 32,582 votes. Despite winning Utah, McMullin did worse overall nationwide, with more of his out of state support going to Paul and the Libertarians. However, to most in Utah he was still the only option for "true conservatives" and this would help him for many years to come.

First time a breakfast sandwich won any electoral votes.

Is that joke still a thing?

Hurricane Stormy

POD:
David Vitter's prostitution scandal breaks during his re-election campaign, hamstringing his ability to conduct in-advance damage control. A split in the anti-Vitter vote ensues.

The defeat of David Vitter in the 2010 Republican primary was chalked up to the senator's numerous infidelities, nothing out of the ordinary for Louisiana. That's where the banality ends however, since the new candidate could be described as anything but ordinary. Stephanie Clifford, a professional pornographic actress better known by her stage name 'Stormy Daniels', held no office prior to winning the nomination. Her unconventional candidacy fueled media interest in both the 'novelty' story and the 'toss-up' race in an otherwise bleak year for Southern Democrats. The Clifford campaign used this spotlight to their advantage, supplementing prohibitively expensive media buys with free national advertising.

On election day the Republican Party picked up nine seats to the Democrats' zero, Louisiana being no exception. Stephanie Clifford had taken the state by storm. Once seated, Clifford became an unlikely ally to child advocacy groups by lobbying for Restricted to Adults websites and other measures for the adult film industry to protect children from inappropriate material. Clifford's strong support for the Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011 saw her win praise across the board during an otherwise unpopular congress. Other proposals from Clifford, such as paid maternity leave for working mothers, cut across party lines to make her one of the most popular Senators in the country. Her frequent quips about congressmen who "lacked the balls" to stand up for their own constituents were naturally also a shot in the arm for her approval numbers...

...when Donald Trump announced his presidential bid, many were dismissive. When Senator Clifford became Trump's first major endorsement, most were certain the whole thing was a joke. They had failed to catch on to the dissatisfaction with traditional politicians, and the Louisiana Senator was just the first of many. Six-term Senator Richard Lugar had lost his primary race to a little known state treasurer in 2012. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor was unseated by a virtually unknown economics professor in 2014, the first sitting Majority Leader to be ousted since the position's creation in 1899. When Cantor subsequently resigned immediately to take up the chairmanship of an investment bank rather than finish the rest of his term, the punditry were left dimly unaware of how he could have possibly lost to an outsider. After Donald Trump clinched the nomination, it was no sooner that these same pundits were declaring his choice of running mate to be the death kneel of his campaign. A reality show host and a pornstar leading a national ticket? Surely anyone would beat that team... right? Guys...? Right?!

Author's Note
Is Daniels' candidacy unlikely? Yes it is. But is real life sometimes stranger than fiction? Well, Alvin Greene held no public campaign events, raised no money, and had no backers when he won the South Carolina democratic primary by accident. The successful Democratic gubernatorial primary candidacy of Robert Gray of Mississippi, the truck driver and retired firefighter who had entered the contest on a whim, was a literal joke gone awry. I could also point to the candidacy of our incumbent president, but that would be tactless.

The Free State of New Hampshire

The question of who would win New Hampshire was never one up for debate. With the success of the Free State Project in 2013, everyone knew the Libertarians would win the state, but not by as much as they did.

This was by far the worst a Republican candidate has done in a general election in a very long time. Getting a measly 8.9% of the popular vote, some Republicans began to doubt Donald Trump as being able to beat Clinton, with some thinking back to Cruz or even of Independent Evan McMullin, but they kept their mouths shut and hoped that their party could pull them through to the White House.
The Libertarians were ecstatic, if they could pull off a few more victories like this, they might be able to deadlock the Electoral College.
