EPISODE 19: WHAT WEAPONS HAVE YOU? - Sounds like Thelarim is good scenery chewing for Savalas there. Surprised Barclay allowed any sort of 'device' near his Engines! I am betting the energy build up under the surface is the unstable energy core for the real weapon they have pointed at the Enterprise, and the Enterprise crew will have to find a way to harness it correctly to save the world.
My intent was for the device in question to have been snuck aboard by Thelarim's saboteur and put on the warp core when Barclay was otherwise occupied.

And yeah, the energy buildup would indeed turn out to be that, though I didn't plan out how the crew would get around it.

One other thing I want to say about the New Jedi Order animated stuff.

In the EU Boba Fett has a daughter, Ailyn Vel (she attacks the Solo kids disguised as her dad and is tortured to death by Jacen in the abysmal Legacy of the Force series). I was thinking Ailyn could be a good recurring antagonist in that she wants revenge on Luke (while I have shared my ideas with President_Lincoln I think Ailyn could be a good recurring antagonist, maybe even undergoing character development and letting go of her anger).

ogrebear_Klingon_sat_in_a_command_chair_on_a_ship_he_is_Ron_Per_6b88ec46-e38d-4e96-a0d4-4eb9398eb1c8.png

Karlak out on a mission.

That would be interesting.

Also, was wondering what you had planned for the New Jedi Order series. For the first students Luke has I'm thinking the following:

1.) Kira (or Kyra): She was raised by Tusken Raiders, but they get slaughtered (possibly by Tremayne's goons, possibly by just regular old gangsters). Luke finds her in the pilot and recruits her.

2.) Kyp Durron Expy: Different Name but he spent his early years on Kessel in the mines; this left him jaded and somewhat rough but he’s a good kid.

3.) Reformed Rich Asshole: Not his name but that’s his character. He’s kind of a duck but he gets better. He also forms a relationship with Kira/Kyra…..which helps make the Kyp Durron Expy jealous enough for Tremayne to work him to the dark side.

Chapter 235: March 1988

MERKERSON IS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED IN FIRST STARFLEET INTELLIGENCE TV MOVIE
NICHOLS, PERLMAN: WE COULD HAVE MADE 3 TO 4 MORE SEASONS, BUT MOVIES ARE OK

Ron Perlman was wistful about his experience on Starfleet Intelligence after the first television movie, Requiem, aired on Paramount in early March. "We should still be on the air every week," Perlman immediately said. "I know our movie was excellent, but I felt we had three more seasons easy, maybe even four more seasons, in us as a group." Perlman specifically cited S. Epatha Merkerson's lead role as Commander Maria Battles, taking the place of Nichelle Nichols in the Intelligence series. Originally brought into the Intelligence fold by Paramount as a throw-in to appease Nichelle Nichols, Merkerson is one of the most in-demand actresses on television. "Sharon really took the role carved out by Nichelle and made it her own. If we had more time to explore Commander Battles, Sharon would have won Leading Actress Emmys just like Nichelle did." Nichols concurred. "I was willing to bow out and let Sharon take the lead, but the Paramount executives believed that I could not be replaced. Now Sharon is going to be the main star of China Beach and ABC will reap the benefits." Cindy Morgan made the first Intelligence movie her last appearance on a Star Trek broadcast; she became one of the leads on Falcon Crest after Intelligence ended its television run. "I played a fantastic character, and Starfleet Intelligence will always stack up as one of, if not the finest series I'll ever work on."

Requiem was a demonstration of Intelligence's lasting ratings power. The made for TV movie won its timeslot with a 22.7 Nielsen rating, likely due to the Star Trek fandom's pent-up demand for more of Merkerson, who was becoming one of the most popular stars at conventions. The movie's plot centered around a mission inside Romulan territory to find the mysterious Reman race, believed to be enslaved by the Romulans. After avoiding several Romulan warships in their perilous trek to Remus, Battles finds that the Remans were subjugated because their telepathic abilities killed a large number of Romulans hundreds of years ago. Battles and her team of spies are introduced to Egnatius, the Reman leader, who is attempting to lead a rebellion against the Romulans. However, his second in command, Rafar, is suspicious of Battles, believing that the Federation is setting a trap to lure the Remans out to be slaughtered. Despite the initial misgivings, Battles persuades the Remans that the Federation supports their cause. However, she discovers a Reman plan to bomb the Romulan Senate, and suggests that Egnatius should table it; otherwise a war would break out.

Without telling Egnatius, Rafar goes through with it anyway, killing most of the Romulan Senators. Lucius, the Romulan Praetor, immediately believes the Federation is behind the bombing, leading to a Romulan declaration of war. Federation President Ra-ghoratreii pleads with the Romulans, imploring them that Starfleet was not at fault for the incident, but Lucius is hellbent on destroying the Federation for "their unthinkable crime," and displays Battles and her captured spies as prisoners. When Battles attempts to surreptitiously communicate with Uhura regarding the bombing, she is tortured. Only Mikaela Marx, due to her Betazoid empathic abilities, is able to resist the torture. Marx telepathically communicates with the Remans, who identify their location and storm the torture chamber. Egnatius sends his ground army to Romulus, but they are defeated. In an attempt to escape, Marx is fatally wounded by Rafar, who telepathically destroys her brain. Rafar believes the Remans were double-crossed by the Federation and sends a unit to kill the rest of Battles' team. In revenge, Karlax kills Rafar with his sword. Marx dies in Karlax's arms; her last words were "everything was worth it, my Klingon friend." Karlax is emotionally overwhelmed by Marx's death, as he developed a deep bond with her and considered her the younger sister he never had. The movie ends with the Romulans fighting a two-front war with both the Federation and Remans; the war is at a stalemate.

FORMER PRESIDENT REAGAN URGES ROBERTSON TO DROP OUT OF GOP PRIMARY
SENATOR DOLE STILL LEADS DELEGATE COUNT AT THE END OF MARCH

The Republican primary contest remained a three-way affair through March, even though it was apparent that televangelist Pat Robertson would not win the nomination. Senator Bob Dole remained the frontrunner and urged both of his rivals to drop out; however, former CIA director George H.W. Bush and Robertson remained in the race. On March 29, as Bush won Connecticut to slightly narrow a sizable deficit on Dole, former President Reagan stepped into the fray, asking for Robertson to drop out and endorse either Dole or Bush. Robertson refused and insisted that he would remain in the contest all the way to the convention in July. Reagan's lack of an endorsement indicated that the Republican Party was not fully behind Dole, even though he had the inside track to the nomination. Democrats took advantage of the Republican chaos to tout President Glenn's domestic policy successes, including education reform, infrastructure, and the previously unpopular urban renewal bill, which solidified the President's standing in states with large cities, such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, California, and Florida.

At the end of March, the Republican primary stood as follows (2296 delegates, 1149 required to win). Senator Dole started March with 145 delegates; CIA director Bush had 101 delegates, and Pat Robertson had 57 delegates.

Alaska caucuses (March 1): Robertson 38%, Dole 31%, Bush 31%. Robertson wins 8 delegates, Dole wins 6 delegates, Bush wins 6 delegates.

WRITER'S STRIKE RESOLVED AFTER THREE WEEKS

The Writer's Guild of America and the major Hollywood studios resolved their impasse on March 22, three weeks after the writers declared a strike. The WGA was able to extract two key concessions out of the studios. Writers received a 20% raise for foreign residuals, or payments received when their programs aired in overseas markets. Writers also received a 20% raise when they achieved three years of seniority on a television program with the option to become a producer. Tracy Torme, a writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, hailed the efforts of David Gerrold, the executive producer of The Next Generation, as critical in ensuring that Hollywood kept running. "If it wasn't for David we'd probably be on strike for six months, maybe longer," Torme said. "David knew the type of pain the writers suffered through, being a writer for 20 years. As a new producer, he was more sympathetic to the writers, but also balanced out the needs of the studio to produce an agreement that is palatable to both sides." Although the writers approved the agreement, there was still some controversy within WGA membership. The 3-year seniority rule worried younger writers who feared that most television shows would turn into closed writer shops. Torme disagreed. "If you've got the talent as a writer, you'll break through, regardless of what barriers are thrown in front of you. Writing is the most honest profession in the world. Your skill will always be recognized."

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION EPISODES

EPISODE 20: HAVEN (Airdate: March 1, 1988).

EPISODE 21: DEMONS OF AIR AND DARKNESS (Airdate: March 15, 1988). The Enterprise enters the Vandros system to catalog gaseous emissions from a nearby comet. Picard goes to the Holodeck to relax while he is off duty. When he starts the Dixon Hill program, he realizes that something is amiss because the characters in the program are not behaving according to the story script. Picard is then captured by Cyrus Redblock and shot in the leg. The safety protocols were turned off mysteriously in the Holodeck, and Picard is bleeding. Normally, Picard hails someone on the bridge an hour after he goes off duty. When no hail is received, Geordi goes to the Holodeck to investigate. He is also captured. When Riker tries to blast them out, he is placed behind an energy shield with Geordi and the wounded Picard. Nurse Troi and Counselor Yar determine that there is some alien threat emanating from Vandros IV, but Data scans the planet and finds no evidence of life. Yar insists that something from the planet is causing the chaos on the ship, and Data allows her, Troi, Worf and O'Brien to beam to the planet's surface.

Meanwhile, Picard is losing consciousness on the Holodeck due to blood loss. Geordi pleads with Cyrus Redblock (or who he thinks is Cyrus Redblock) to allow Picard to receive medical attention, and Redblock refuses. Geordi then attempts to seize the gun from Redblock but is electrically shocked and falls unconscious. On the planet, Yar discovers an ancient beacon and scans it. The beacon comes to life and strikes the Enterprise with an energy bolt, knocking out power to most of the ship's systems except for life support and the Holodeck that Picard, Geordi and Riker are trapped in. Yar tries to communicate with the energy being that emerges from the beacon, who calls itself an Iconian. Yar demands to know why the Iconian is causing the Enterprise and its crew so much trouble. When the Iconian refuses to answer, Worf draws a phaser and is electrically shocked like Geordi was in the Holodeck. Troi and Yar devise a plan to communicate with Riker, who Troi senses is still conscious. The Betazoid nurse connects with Riker, who asks Redblock whether he feels strange. Amazingly, Redblock answers in the affirmative. Riker then finds out that Redblock was just a means for the Iconians to take over the Enterprise as a means to leave the Vandros system. Picard, who is in shock, proposes that the Enterprise send an unmanned shuttlecraft to the planet's surface for the Iconian to use. The Iconian tells Picard that its species was destroyed by an ancient empire thousands of years ago and that there is only one other Iconian who survived their civilization's destruction. Riker promises to assist in whatever way he and the Enterprise can. Picard is healed by the Iconian and the Enterprise (plus Picard + Geordi) survives a close call.

EPISODE 22: BREAKOUT (Airdate: March 22, 1988). The Enterprise receives a Priority One message from Starbase 85. Sulla (Patrick Bauchau), the subcommander that the Enterprise placed into custody, is apparently dead. When the Enterprise reaches the starbase, they find out from the starbase commander, Captain Granger, that the DNA test on Sulla's apparently dead body does not match up with their records. Picard declares that a manhunt is necessary because Sulla is at large. He wants to know how Sulla escaped from the starbase. Smelling a rat, Geordi and Data determine that Captain Granger was turned by the Romulans before Sulla arrived at Starbase 85. When the Enterprise finds a shuttlecraft warp signature indicating Sulla's possible whereabouts, two Romulan D'Deridex warbirds decloak. Commander Tomalak introduces himself to Picard and informs the Enterprise captain that Starbase 85 was originally in Romulan territory according to the Treaty of Algeron. Picard refers the matter to the Intergalactic Council of Peace, but Tomalak fires on the Enterprise, which is overmatched by the two D'Deridexes. As Tomalak is about to destroy the Enterprise, Sulla arrives with a message--The Enterprise is to be brought back to Romulus and its crew is to undergo interrogation. Picard refuses and has a trick up his sleeve; he transfers warp engine power to the phasers to give them enough power to fight off the D'Deridex warbirds. Two phaser shots from the Enterprise cause the Romulan warbirds to withdraw. Sulla hails Picard and immediately recognizes what he did. He warns Picard that what the Federation can do, the Romulans can do better, and they will be back at Starbase 85 very soon after the Intergalactic Council of Peace renders its ruling.

“but I felt we had three more seasons easy, maybe even four more seasons, in us as a group” - I suspect execs and even some fans would disagree based on the quality of some later S:I episodes. Guess Ron misses the regular paycheck?

“Merkerson is one of the most in-demand actresses on television” - awesome news. Perhaps if Merkerson can break the Trek typecasting Nicols might also return to TV in other roles?

“Cindy Morgan made the first Intelligence movie her last appearance on a Star Trek broadcast” - hopefully she can be persuaded back for some guest roles on TNG?

Egnatius, the Reman leader, .” - played by? How about Peter Falk?

“. sends his ground army “ - for a subject people these Remans have a lot of firepower!

Go Karlax!

“.The movie ends with the Romulans fighting a two-front war with both the Federation and Remans;“ - well if the Romulans have woken the UFP they will lose if the Federation gears up for it. A lot will depend on the Klingon reaction.

This does lead to a question- why were the S:I team seeking the Remans in the first place? If just to make contact then why send so many agents? If part of a conspiracy to ignite a war by elements in Starfleet they got their way- certain would a nice twist from the Klingon conflict in OTL’s ST:VI.

There has to be a project that follows this up? ST: S:I II or
a regular Trek series. A Sulu led wartime series might a solid ratings draw esp as a contrast to the much more peaceful times of TNG.

“Data allows her, Troi, Worf and O'Brien to beam to the planet's surface.” - why not pull into a higher orbit or goto the edge of the system to see if things change?

“Redblock was just a means for the Iconians to take over the Enterprise as a means to leave the Vandros system.” - and go where unsupervised with that much power?

“Picard is healed by the Iconian” - was it a well known actor as the Iconian?

“Smelling a rat, Geordi and Data determine that Captain Granger was turned by the Romulans” - nice work lads!

“Commander Tomalak introduces himself” - same lovely, wonderful actor as OTL?

“that Starbase 85 was originally in Romulan territory according to the Treaty of Algeron.” - was, does not mean it is now.

“Two phaser shots from the Enterprise cause the Romulan warbirds to withdraw.” - only 2 shots? I would hope one on each warbird to render them nearly crippled!

“and they will be back at Starbase 85 very soon after the Intergalactic Council of Peace renders its ruling.” - hopefully TNG will not go too far into a Romulan arc when S:I left a war hanging.

Nice episode outlines there.

Great chapter, glad to have you back. Hope you are ok.

Great chapter, glad to have you back. Hope you are ok.
I'm so glad to be back. Hopefully within a week I'll have another update ready but that's not certain.

I suspect you're right on Ron Perlman wanting the paycheck, but he is in the Beauty and the Beast TV series so he is getting a steady paycheck. However, he is getting a couple of side roles as a heavy in movies. Perlman will most notably be in Die Hard ITTL which premieres in July 1988. He will also be in demand as a supporting character in Major League (baseball movie made in 1989), and possibly Batman (also 1989). So Ron is getting some decent work. He could be typecast though; Karlax is a really difficult character to not be typecasted against ITTL.

Oscars/Academy Awards will make up a bulk of the next update (April 1988) so we'll see how Red Storm Rising does.

S. Epatha Merkerson will be the female lead in ABC's China Beach (a Vietnam War drama). Then she goes to Law and Order or possibly the movies (if China Beach is a bigger hit than OTL). She will also run into RL Star Trek alum Robert Picardo, who played a surgeon IRL on that show.

Cindy Morgan's character, Mikaela Marx, is killed off in Requiem (the first S:I movie). So she might only appear as a memory in someone's flashback or dream. Karlax takes her death really hard because she really had everything he didn't have in life (an ideal childhood on a peaceful planet, freedom to choose her own direction in life). ITTL Karlax and Marx weren't romantic; it was more like an older brother/younger sister relationship because Karlax knows everything about the espionage game, but Mikaela Marx had the telepathic abilities that Karlax could never have.

Robert Davi (who played Sanchez in License to Kill) would be a perfect actor to play Rafar. James Cromwell or Bruce Spence would actually be a good Egnatius. The Reman army is more like a guerrilla group than an army (think the Viet Cong).

The second S:I movie will resolve the war. It might be a 6 month wait though.

George Takei is still mayor of Los Angeles ITTL so he has time only for brief parts in the original Star Trek movies and nothing else. If he decides to leave politics (or run for higher office and lose) then he'll be freed up for some acting roles.

Robertson knows that he is playing kingmaker (unless Dole gets a majority of the delegates without needing Robertson's). Reagan attempting to push Robertson out is the first attempt at triaging a really bad situation developing for the Republicans because President Glenn is leading the Democrats who are united behind him. Plus the Republicans know they have to somehow win a general election without Ohio since Glenn is from there.

David Gerrold's career arc is going to be interesting. Does he stay as executive producer of TNG or does he try to branch out into doing something more prestigious, outside of science fiction? He is being hailed as the man who saved Hollywood from disaster.

Tracy Torme ITTL (and probably IRL too) wants/wanted to be part of that inner circle of TNG writers for as long as possible so he's speaking from the perspective of someone who wants that producer's credit. All the top screenwriters want to be producers at some point. Torme left TNG IRL before he could become a producer IIRC.

Data is successfully persuaded by Yar and Troi to determine whether the planet is the origin of the signal afflicting the Holodeck.

Tom Atkins would be a pretty good Iconian. Other possibilities: Richard Dysart (who was good friends with Diana Muldaur), Jeffrey DeMunn, Pete Postlethwaite, Timothy Carhart

Andreas Katsulas is Tomalak--who else could be him? Perfect casting. He and Patrick Bauchau chew all the scenery in BREAKOUT (the TNG episode ITTL).

I should have said two phaser shots to each warbird. I should have also said that the Enterprise was limited to a few phaser shots at the most because of the drain on the warp engines because Barclay rewired the phaser/warp conduits.

Again it's good to be back!

I think that Peter Falk would make a great Kobry, perhaps as K'Ehleyr’s mentor, he be a fan fav I think, coming back often enough to prevent the bad 80’s reboot of Columbo

More please!

Any other changes to TTL's version of the greatest Christmas movie?
I wouldn't change the greatest Christmas movie of all time too much. But I thought someone like Ron Perlman would be a perfect addition. Maybe Gruber survives somehow for Die Hard 2? None of the sequels had a villain nearly as compelling as Gruber

I dunno, I thought Jeremy Irons as Simon was pretty good baddie.
