FLAG CHALLENGE 282: United We Stand

Make a flag for the union of 2 or more polities which did not occur OTL. This can be something like the flag of the union of North/South Korea or of the Union of North/ Republic of Ireland. It could also be a union which was proposed but never implemented like the Union of Russia & Belarus. Try to avoid unions which have no historical basis ("ex: The Union of Senegal & fiji")

Okay, I won round 282 by default.
Balkania
1.png

Balkania is the name of the confederation of Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro that existed from 1997 to 2007. Although relatively short-lived, the confederation proposed by Kosovo Albanian politician Adem Demaçi prevented an escalation of the Kosovo-Serbia conflict and was peacefully dissolved after the 2007 referendum.

Flag Challenge #283: Corporatocracy

Your task is to draw the flag of a corporation that somehow got an entire country under its control. Whether it's a chartered company from the past, a megacorp from the cyberpunk future, or anything else is up to you.

Submissions Close: 09:00 GMT, February 18th

Please remember to review the RULES, especially concerning flag size. For an image in a single-flag entry, the shortest side must be 600 pixels or less, and the longest side must be 1200 pixels or less.

And the winner is @Petike.
Republic of Hudsonia.png

Republic of Hudsonia

The flag of Hudsonia carries over the colours present in the traditional flag of the Hudson Bay Company (including the colours of the Union Flag in the canton). The coat of arms at the centre of the flag contains, in the upper part of the shield, a stylised logo of the Hudson Bay Company on a red field (the traditional red of the HBC flag), and in the lower part of the shield, an Arctic poppy on a white field (symbolising the Canadian Arctic). The blue field surrounding the shield is a stylised representation of the Hudson Bay and its waters, whereas the two white fields surrounding the blue field represent the Canadian mainland. (The shield on the blue field also symbolises the larger islands in the Hudson Bay.) The white-red-white-red alternating stripe borders of the flag are meant to give the flag a more memorable presence, and also represent the commitment of the HBC and the Hudsonian government to protect the territory of Hudsonia and its economic interests in Hudsonia. The stylised logo of the HBC was invented in the latter 19th century. After Hudsonia sought and eventually won independence - with hefty support of the HBC leadership - the new country's coat of arms incorporated the newer logo of the HBC into its design.

FLAG CHALLENGE #284: Condominium

Create a flag for an allohistorical territory, such as a former colony or overseas territory, that is jointly administered by at least two countries.

Condominium - "cooperative rule", "mutually administered rule" - is a term used, mainly historically, for cases when two different states/countries jointly administered a certain territory somewhere in the world. Either nearby, or in different parts of the globe. The key is that the two countries cooperate in the administration of the territory in question, on an (at least roughly) equal footing and in equal measure. (For OTL historical examples of condominiums, please see the link provided at the start of this paragraph.)

The jointly administered territory - the condominium - doesn't necessarily have to be a land the size of a country. It can be something as small as a city, or town, or (if your funny bone is tingling) something as small as a village or hamlet. You can use fictional, ATL countries for the outside administrators and the condominium, as well as OTL countries for the outside administrators and the condominium. Try to keep the ATL countries rooted at least somewhat in OTL historical reality (i.e. we can tell which country/countries this fictional ATL state developed from). You don't need to but can add some brief POD info, if you feel like it (especially if you feel it adds to the believability of your backstory). If you want to use more than two countries as administrators, say, three or four, you can. You need to use at least two.

We're going old-school, pure alternate history in this challenge. To make things just a wee bit more challenging, but very lenient, minor restrictions:
- Future history, sci-fi and ASB/fantasy flags are not allowed in this challenge.
- You can't make flags for condominiums governed by totalitarian states, military juntas, etc. Let's avoid going dystopian and focus on more or less democratic countries co-ruling in a condominium. (Of course, this doesn't mean that your scenario's backstory can't have background tensions.)
- Don't go the easy route of a scenario where a country splits in two and the successor states make the mutual capital a condominium. Go for something a little more creative.

The winner of round 284 is @garabik, with the flag for the condominium in the City of Stettin. Congratulations. :)

st3-png.817547

The City of Stettin

By the Treaty of Versailles the navigation on the Oder became subject to international agreements, and following its articles 363 and 364 Czechoslovakia was entitled to lease in Stettin its own harbour bassin, then called (in German) Tschechoslowakische Zone im Hafen Stettin.

After WWII, Czechoslovakia argued for extension of the lease, given the new German-Polish border (specified at the Oder river) left the status of the city itself unclear. Following 1946, the city of Stettin (Czech: Štětín, Slovak: Štetín) was put under Czechoslovak administration. This caused protests by the Polish (both the Provisional Government of National Unity and the (irrelevant) London government in exile) and the relations between Poland and Czechoslovakia remained strained until, following the Czechoslovak February coup in 1948, a treaty of friendship between Czechoslovakia and Poland has been signed, mediated by the USSR. Poland recognized the sovereignty of Czechoslovakia over the city, while the port has been put under common Polish-Czechoslovak administration, making it de iure a condominium.

Czechoslovakia also asked for the control over the city of Königsberg, but Soviet Union very firmly made it very clear that this is not a good idea (and indeed, the whole East Prussia has been divided between Poland and the USSR shortly afterwards). It is not clear if this was meant seriously, or it was only a joke or a mistake. In fact, this would be such a preposterous demand that many historians doubt the veracity of this claim.

Following the victory of Solidarność in Poland, the Velvet revolution in Czechoslovakia, the hitherto restrictive and secluded city was open for travel, and after the start of the German re-unification talks, the borders between Poland and Germany were quickly re-asserted as inviolable, but (west) Germany successfully renegotiated the status of Stettin with Czechoslovakia to as Czechoslovak-German condominium (for a hundred million marks paid to Czechoslovakia), while a separate agreement with Poland made the port itself a triple Czechoslovak-Polish-German administered area. (In practice his meant the citizens of Germany and Czechoslovakia had the right to work and reside in the city, people with permanent residentship in the city of longer than 5 years had the right to move and work in Germany; Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia could freely use the port facilities. This became quite irrelevant after all the countries joined the EU.).

When Czechoslovakia split in 1993, the previous agreements were extended to cover both Czech Republic and Slovakia “jointly and severally”, the city thus became a Czech-Slovak-German condominium, and the port a Czech-Slovak-German-Polish one, an agreement that lasts till today.

In 1946, a special naval ensign for a (never to materialize) “Czechoslovak Baltic fleet” has been designed, using elements from the flag of the city, defaced with the Czechoslovak coat of arms.
View attachment 817534

This flag has been (unofficially) used throughout the city itself, alongside the Czechoslovak flag, while a similar version with the Polish coat of arms has been used by the Polish authorities in the port.
View attachment 817535

After 1993, there were several proposals for the new (and official) flag of the city, but including all the three (four) coats of arms was deemed impractical, and at the end, a simpler design incorporating the colours from respective national flags has been adopted, giving the flag its infamous garish look (and the less said about the numerous occasions when it is mistaken for an LGBT flag nowadays, the better).

FLAG CHALLENGE #285: Green Ukraine

Green Ukraine independence was an OTL abortive movement for a region that probably does not even deserve to be named a country, not even an ephemeral one.

However, the history might have gone differently...

Create a flag for a successful Green Ukraine country (not the one mentioned on Wikipedia) . Now, the very notion of a "successful" country is a matter of debate, so let's just define "successful" as existing for at least a decade in a recognizable shape, with the government/administration generally in control of the population and the land, with all the usual institutions, even if propped up or outright puppetized by a strong neighbour.

Be it a truly independent country after Russia succumbed to warlordism, a Soviet-governed buffer country à la Far Eastern Republic, a member of the Greater Co-Prosperity Sphere, post-USSR breakaway region, you name it...

Not necessarily sovereign and independent, being a fully fledged SSR (that might or might not become independent after the breakup of the USSR) is acceptable.

The country has to pay at least a lip service to the Ukrainian culture and language, virtual bonus points if it keeps close ties to the "Western" Ukraine. This would be reflected by the flag.

Round winner for #285:

OOC: That took quite a while to figure out, but here we go.

IC:

Zakytaishchyna Provisional Administrative Region
匝克伊泰使契丹临时行政区

PRC Green Ukraine (Resized).png

Possessing the characteristics of an autonomous region and a Special Administrative Region, Zakytaishchyna, or Transcathay, was formed as a Chinese-backed buffer state in the chaos of the Second Russian Civil War. While officially recognized as part of the new Russian Federation, the territory had been under Chinese occupation since 1992, officially designated as a Provisional Administrative Region in 1998 as a formal consolidation of warlord states and local administrations by Beijing. Composed of the former provinces of Primorsky Krai, Amur Oblast, southern Khabarovsk Krai and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Transcathay theoretically possesses wide-ranging autonomy, ostensibly as a temporary measure until its eventual reintegration with Russia. In practice, all representatives of the new Transcathay Rada are vetted by Beijing for potential anti-Chinese sentiment, with Russian unionists disproportionately barred from local elections.

One unusual effect of such measures is the ascendance of the 'Green Ukraine' party. While starting out as an autonomist fringe movement among the Ukrainian diaspora in the occupied zone, Green Ukraine quickly established itself as the dominant party in Transcathay, melding Russian imperial ideology with the romanticism of the Kievan Rus. Believing Russian culture to be tainted by so-called 'Muscovite deficiencies', the party advocated for the promotion of Ukrainian language and culture. While overtly supportive of protecting Russian language rights and culture, the Green Ukraine-dominated Rada soon initiated widespread reforms aimed at their replacement, with growing emphasis on Ukrainian-medium education, culture and history. Even the choice of flag design, a sunflower motif akin to the SAR flags of Hong Kong and Macau, are indicative of Green Ukraine's far-reaching ambitions. And while Beijing remain outwardly supportive of the government for its promotion of Chinese investments, indecision on its rapprochement with Moscow and Transcathay's radical policies has put the state's future in doubt.

And challenge:

FLAG CHALLENGE #286: Into the Virtual Rabbit Hole

They came out of nowhere, out of the virtual black hole. Where there were few, many now take the stage. Mysterious personalities hidden behind digital avatars, the VTubers now dominate real-space. Mortal men sought to find an explanation, from diabolical cults to the warping of the metaphysical world. But whoever - or whatever they are - they have taken over the world as we know it, building their sinister, cyberpunk dystopias to the adoration of millions...

Design a flag based on a VTuber personality. The flag could be for a simple fan club, lands based on the fictional lore of the VTuber or even functioning (or dysfunctional) states in the real world that the VTuber had somehow taken over. You can either choose to base the flag on an existing VTuber personality or make one up on your own. If it's an original character, please give a brief outline of the VTuber. Flags based on more than one VTuber is also ok.

@Gokbay wins Challenge #286 by default with Suisei City.

Well, since I have been in the rabbit hole for like 3 years now so might as well throw my hat in the ring.

The City of Stars:
hoshimachi-nation-png.825785

In the not so distant Cyberpunk future of 20XX the traditional nation state is no longer the sole type of sovereign authority. Of course most will think of the "Mega-corps" who have established their rule in various places on Earth much like the East India Company of old. Workers Unions and Cooperatives of similar scales compete against them. Voluntary Peoples Associations, be they capitalistic or socialistic have succeeded in something that might be recognized as Anarchism in some regions and there have even been whole societies existing solely in virtual reality that have become sovereign entities. However weirdest of non-traditional political authorities to have established themselves in the physical world have been Vtubers. As dozens of Vtubers, be they independent or affliated with an agency/corporation, have established their own sovereign states. Having seized control of territories ranging from small islands, whole cities to small countries.

One of these "Sovereign Virtual Youtubers" is Hoshimachi Suisei, originally an independent Vtuber who later joined, and remains affliated with Hololive of Cover Corp. She has established a city state in the Japanese Archipelago, populated mostly by her fans (but has also become a popular immigration spot for many people who were overworked in their previous countries due to the comfortable work hours in the city, starting at 3pm and only a 3 hour workday). Officially known as the "Hoshimachi Nation" with Hoshimachi (星街 meaning star and city) being name of both the city and the country. She is the sole head of state and government styled "Prime Minister", thought political scientists consider her to be more of an absolute monarch than a parliamentary head of government (and while it might simply be aesthetics, one should note that her most commonly seen official outfits possesses two small crowns worked into her beret). As many newly built cities utilising the wonders of Cyberpunk technology the city has many peculiarities. The most significant of which is that ever since it's foundation sun has never once risen over it, as the nation exists in a state of eternal night. Despite this agriculture is still practiced and people are kept fed through Blue Rice, which can subsist only on moon and starlight (developed by Hakui Labs, operated by Professor Hakui Koyori, another Hololive talent and member of Secret Society HoloX). Somehow, despite the lack of sunlight and an onlly 3 hour long workday work productivity has increased in comparison to Japan of 2020. As for the economy, outside of tourism, export of Blue Rice, Hoshimachi Suisei merchandise, licensing of her music and donations by her many fans winning the lotteries has been officially stated to be a source of revenue by a press release from the Prime Minister. A notable tourist spot is the Hoshimachi Park, home to a concert venue where there is always a Hoshimachi Suisei concert going (mostly through AI replications or recordings of previous concerts but new live concerts are also held quite often, with at least one per year). Other attractions of the Park being parades and sessions of being chased by an axe wielding Hoshimachi.

Now, as for the flag. The flag shown here is the national flag. The proportions of which are 2-3. The design is a dark blue background with a gold ten pointed star in the canton (constructed from a five pointed star on top of an upside down five pointed star)* and a light blue "tail" extending to the bottom right corner of the flag, dividing the flag diagonally. The flag is meant to evocate a comet streaking across the night sky, as comet is the meaning of "Suisei". With it more abstractly symbolising a drive to advance ever onwards and upwards, towards future success and prosperity.

*: inspired by the brooch? on her tie, which is also visible on the bow on her belt in her default outfit, same star is also visible on most her alternate outfits.
**: the shades of dark and light blue sampled from her concept art.
***: on a side note there is this star with waves (stylized comet from front?) symbol she has, which much like that multilayered 10 pointed star originated in her times as an indie. Which is in many of her outfits, For example on her necktie and knee-high stockings in her default outfit. I considered including it in the flag but thought that would make it too busy. But I think in this scenario that symbol could be the charge of a personal royal/prime-ministerial flag, probably white or gold on a similar dark blue field.

While I mostly chose Suisei because I just like her a lot, I was also reminded of this clip when I saw the challenge of "Vtuber (national) flag", despite Vtuber's with princess/queen etc. lores would have probably been a more obvious choice. It was the source for the most of the details I mentioned about the country.
Concept art by Teshima Nari. Source of the dark and light blue shades I used in the flag, as well as serving as an example of what I am talking about with the crowns on the beret, the multilayered star brooch thingie and that star symbol on her necktie.
Hoshimachi_Suisei_-_Concept_Illustration_04.jpg

(Speaking of vtubers, I have to say, after having looked up and not found one in the past I have been tempted to open a Vtuber thread in the off-topic media and fandom or non-political chat sub-forums once or twice before but never did it)

FLAG CHALLENGE #287: The Celestial Sphere

Design a flag that includes constellation symbolism in some ways. Be it like modern Southern Cross or Alaska Big Dipper flags, or with the inclusion of the lines connecting the stars or even a Lion for Leo or Bull for Taurus. Zodiac signs are also fine. You are not limited by the Zodiac, all constellations and asterisms are fine. Including non-Western constellations like Chinese are also welcome.

Bavarian Proud State
View attachment 828730
Just as other flags from the period of the Great European Troubles of 1916-1924, like the Italian Andromeda Unchained banner or the Spanish Taurus flag, it is easy to see that the flag of the Bavarian Proud State dates back to the tradition established by the Irish Citizen Army of depicting constellations on their flags.
The flag depicts the Archangel Michael constellation or Ursa Minor, also known as the Little Bear, the Little Dipper in North America, and various other names worldwide. Ursa Minor has traditionally been important for navigation because of Polaris being the north pole star, and according to the flag's creators, the meaning of the flag was that a free Bavaria would steer its own destiny. The name of the constellation was taken from Julius Schiller's star atlas because of the reluctance to use the image of the bear associated with Berlin.

Flag Challenge #288: Capepunk

I tried to think of an area that hadn't been covered by the previous challenges and came up with superhero fiction. I think there's a lot of room for creativity here. Superhero teams, fictional mutant island nations, countries overrun by supervillains, and so on can all have flags.

Your task is to make a flag for something like that. It can be either a flag for a polity from an existing comic universe or something completely new.

Zothique.png

The skies were red, there was a rumble in the Earth, and overnight it was there. No one outside the Despotate of Zothique knows where it came from, just that it appeared, a virgin microcontinent, in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. Theories abound. Sunken land raised from the depths? A place transported from the past or future? One called down from space? A voracious living organism? No one knows for sure, and the Cadre, greatest band of sorcerors and science villains the world has ever seen, certainly aren't telling, though they've used the threat of vengeance weapons of terrible power to force the issue of international recognition. The Cadre rules the land with an iron fist, having populated it entirely with their followers and servitors, wielding supreme power from the capitol city of Rendang. As near as the members of the heroic Deep State can tell, the Despotate is divided into five primary factions:
  • The Children of the Broken World, serving the whims of the Crooked Man. What if Ra's al Ghul was the Joker?
  • The Bloody Tongue, servitors of the Queen of Sighs. Basically Doctor Strange foe Umar.
  • The Vril Society, guided by the iron will of Sun Koh. Red Skull meets Namor.
  • The Ancestors of Tsan Chan, devotees of the Maker of Moons. Mandarin meets Vandal Savage but Lovecraftian.
  • The Abhuman Liberation Front, shepherded by the Typhonian. Magneto, but with powers revolving around causing natural disasters.
The flag of the despotate combines symbols of these five fractions, with a Vril sign inside a sigil of the Bloody Tongue, black and gold favored by the Typhonian, the particular shade of green for the Crooked Man and an overall structure based on the banner of Tsan Chan.

Basically, what if a Legion of Doom controlled a much larger version of Gamorra?

Flag Challenge #289: Give Me A Break, Martha Washington!

Based on a recent convo I had about the Give Me Liberty comic over on Sufficient Velocity I had a neat idea for the challenge! The mission, should you choose to except it, is to pick a successor state from that depiction of the Second Civil War and design a decent flag for it!

Okay, since none of us accepted Born in the USA's challenge, on his instructions (quoted above) I'll try this one...

Flag Challenge #289 (reboot): Better - or worse - together

Going a bit ASB with this:
Design a flag for a multi-national military organisation (like NATO, SEATO, CTSO, the Warsaw Pact, etc), formed by a group of nations aligned with a nation which in OTL lost a war (e.g. the CSA, Nazi Germany, etc) but in this world won it. That central nation should be OTL but the other nations can be OTL or fictional. No limitation on when this should be set - if you want to choose a nation which lost a war 1000 years ago, go ahead...

OOC: Might as well give the Continental System a challenge, since the idea just came up to me.

Righteous Alliance

"Across the four seas and distant lands, sin has taken over the world. The impious and the heathen surround us, all envious of those chosen by the grace of our Lord and Saviour. Imperial powers who had strayed from the light of God hunger for our riches, and seethe at the fierce resistance of those they sought to enslave. The heathen Japanese, outraged at our ascendance and strength of faith, continues to hamper the spread of His word, spurring the unenlightened within our ranks into revolt. For that, we have taken it upon ourselves to form a grand alliance, banding the oppressed peoples of the periphery together against our common enemies. May the Lord guide us through these trying times. God bless us all." - Hong Zhengping (洪正平), 3rd Heavenly King of Taiping, 1908 inaugural conference of the Righteous Alliance.

Dubbed the 'Holy League of the East', the Righteous Alliance holds the unique distinction of a Christian military alliance centered in the Far East. While the overthrow of the Qing dynasty by the Taiping rebellion was met with much celebration from the Western powers, relations with the new Taiping dynasty rapidly soured, as successive rulers sought to reverse the unequal treaties imposed on the previous government. Worse, the rise of modern Japan soon made it a champion for the now-persecuted non-Christian Chinese, especially the Buddhists victimized by attacks by Taiping Christian mobs and authorities. Beset on all sides by rivals and enemies, the Taiping kingdom quickly entered into alliances with rebel groups throughout Southeast and East Asia. Even the very faith that the Western powers used to undermine indigenous authority is now being used to spread heterodox doctrine, one that denounces their hypocrisy and hedonism, and questioned their own commitments to God.

Exemplified by a simple Chinese character of 'righteous' in a yellow background, the Righteous Alliance is composed of a hodgepodge of statelets and rebel groups across China's borders. From Christian tribes in the periphery of the British Raj, to the new Heavenly Kingdom of Goryeo, the Taiping-led alliance had taken great strides in a new 'crusade' against the imperial powers. With indigenous, Taiping-supported missions replacing Western ones at an unprecedented rate, many in Europe had begun to dread and envy the new Christian power of the east. Such is the threat of the Righteous Alliance that the rumours had spread of Taiping missionaries appealing to heretical Russian sects and the Oriental Orthodox churches.

The latest challenge has been won by @Remitonov - congratulations!
Thanks. I'll try to come up with a challenge tomorrow night or Wednesday. I think I have something in mind.

EDIT: Why did I post the comment here?... No matter, I was reminded of an old challenge I made from 5 years ago, so here's something from a page in Crusader Kings 2.

Flag challenge #290: No Place For Another Sun

The Middle Kingdom has fallen, beset by foreign invaders or unworthy usurpers. Scattered to the four winds, those that cling on to the old ways seek refuge in distant lands, to rebuild what was lost or found a new Middle Kingdom. The Mandate may be lost, who is to say it cannot be reclaimed. The squatters who taint the Forbidden Palace with their very presence will likely desire our end, and we must be ready for them.

Create a flag of a country founded by Chinese adventurers, diaspora, or simply a people claiming descent from them. For the sake of challenge:
  • Only countries affected by PODs before 1911 (at the fall of the Qing dynasty) may be considered. Republics and People's Republics are but corruptions by insidious Western devils.
  • The country must adopt aspects of Chinese culture, such as language, script or culture. It's ok if several generations of intermarriage had made the rulers virtually indistinguisable from the natives, but at least some aspect of their Chinese origins should still be visible and influential among the natives.
  • Do not just remake a flag of a historical or current country with a Chinese majority without a POD. His Divine Majesty demands entertainment!
  • Taiwan Chinese Taipei is strictly forbidden. It's been done to death. Other countries in the Sinosphere will be considered, but try to be more creative.
Now, go forth, and may fortune smile on you and your ancestors!

By default, congratulations to @Drea for winning Challenge #290!

WFC #290

First time attempting something like this, I used GIMP, let me know if you've got any feedback.

ATL in which the Tang were victorious at the Battle of Talas in 751 and in general continued their expansion in Central Asia with further ease, with a negative impact on several other geopolitical entities in the area, that could never reach the power or size they achieved in OTL.

However, the An Lushan rebellion still happened. ITTL, a group of adventurers made headway within territories of northern Central Asia outside of Tang domains, where they founded the self-professed Changgui Kingdom. Their claim was that the Tang had lost the Mandate of Heaven due to their corruption allowing the rebellion to arise, and that the Yan were to be blamed for the atrocities of the tumults themselves, and thus never held it in the first place. The Changgui particularly attempted to expand in the general direction of Sogdia, due to its perceived links to An Lushan.

Though parts of the An Lushan rebellion played out differently - with the Tang borrowing less troops from other countries but also having more at their disposal in the first place due to their earlier expansion in Central Asia - the Tang eventually defeated the Yan, like in OTL. After the end of the tumults, in a similar way to the Youzhou Jiedushi area, the Changgui Kingdom held on as a semi-autonomous military district under the Tang for about a century. This flag was used during its period of complete autonomy, between the 750s and the mid-760s.

The flag, here presented devoid of any streamers that may have customarily been displayed alongside it, resembles one used by the Tang dynasty (this is a clickable link for comparison). However, the Changgui flag lacks the sun-and-moon symbol the Tang flag has in its centre, and has a different colour scheme. Specifically, the yellow in the centre of the Tang flag has been replaced with black, the outer black spiked line has been replaced with red, and the white line in between them has been replaced with qing (which indicates green or blue). Lastly, a plain, proportionally smaller yellow circle has replaced the sun-and-moon circle in the centre of the Tang flag. These decisions all largely correlate to wuxing - in particular, the prominence of black in the flag indicates the fact that the adventurers who founded the Changgui Kingdom did so by journeying northwards, and that, in their opinion, they mantained something which others had lost.

FLAG CHALLENGE #291: “O Franza o Spagna, purché se magna”

"Either France or Spain, as long as there's something to eat." A saying from our own timeline, rather dubiously attributed to Francesco Guicciardini in the context of the then-current sixteenth century Habsburg-Valois Wars, during and after which the two dynasties partitioned between themselves Italy and other states affected by the fighting.

Your task is to design a flag for any ATL state which:
  • Holds lands outside of modern-day Italy
  • Has obtained lands in Italy after one or more war treaties
  • Isn't considered primarily Italian by its current leaders
  • Isn't a theocracy, but may have any other form of government
  • Isn't a splinter of, or a vassal of, the Eastern Roman Empire
Point of divergence may be anywhere between the start of the sixth century and the end of the eighteenth century.

Please remember to review the contest rules, especially concerning flag size: for an image in a single-flag entry, the shortest side must be 600 pixels or less, and the longest side must be 1200 pixels or less.
