Maybe the attacks there involved the old "bomb on the cargo hold" routine instead?

I'm going under the assumption that the car bomb just severely damaged the supports, it partially collapsed, and is later rebuilt.

Instead of AFL1638, because of the time difference, I suggest AFL1006, an Airbus A320 from Moscow-Sheremetyevo to Königsberg. (Playing it safe here. If it's Kaliningrad like in OTL, let me know.)

    January 12, 2002.

Day 1 of the 3 days of terrorist attacks called 1/13, after the main day of attacks.

It starts off with 3 coordinated attacks in Tokyo over 4 hours.

    Shibuya Station, 7:00 AM.

It starts at Shibuya Crossing, the most crossed pedestrian street in the world. The first attacker, Takahiro Kamenashi, driving his car, a 2002 Toyota Tundra, down Inokashira Dori. At 7:00, when pedestrians flooded the area, he stepped on his accelerator, and drove through the crowd, killing 13 of them, and wounding another 45, before immediately turning right and speeding down towards the station, where he parked his car at Shibuya Station.

His friend, Toki Okada, knew what to do. At 7:03, he pulled out his AK-47, and opened fire at the commuters, killing 26 and wounding another 59 over a span of 5 minutes. Takahiro got out of his car, and into the station, where he rounded up 128 commuters, and forced them into a small room together. Toki then proceeded to telephone the Japanese government, and told them that in order to set him free, they would need to give them 11 million Yen, a full pardon, and to force the Emperor to abdicate. And if all demands are either not met or not partially met by the next hour, they would kill half of the hostages, and so on and so forth.

They then let the rest of the commuters (The ones not in the 128) out of the building, then immediately detonating a bomb inside Takahiro's car, killing 15 and wounding another 20 at 7:09. The first responders then arrived at 7:10, and Toki then broadcasted his demands to them as well.

The next 55 minutes were uneventful, as the police started to begin negotiations, until Toki and Takahiro stopped responding at 9:00, with the police only hearing a succession of loud bangs. This is when they stormed the station, and both attackers were killed after they opened fire on the police. (Nobody else was killed or wounded in the shootout, which only lasted around a minute.).

When they opened the door, they realized that 8 of the hostages were killed, but nobody else was wounded.

In total, the Shibuya attack killed 64 (including the 2 attackers), and wounded 124.

An hour and 42 minutes later, All Nippon Airlines Flight 112 took off from Haneda Airport in Tokyo, bound for CER Airport in Chicago. The plane was JA732A, a Boeing 777-300ER, and carried 270 passengers and 7 crew.

At app. 10:52, the 3 hijackers, Katsuyoshi Umemura, Kenjiro Haruno, and Koichi Takamaru, rose up, and walked up to the cockpit from their seats: 30H, 30J, and 30K.

They went up, and stabbed flight attendants Mineko Yomaura, Kaho Ike, and Kazuko Fukeyama, but not fatally. When they went up in first class, a passenger, Yorick Kingston, who was returning home to his native Chicago, attempted to fight the hijackers, but he was fatally stabbed.

They then kicked the cockpit door open, dragged Captain Tsuramatsu Homura and First Officer Hoshiko Bando out of the cockpit, before killing them. Koichi went inside, whilst Kenjiro and Kastuyoshi forced all of the passengers to the back of the plane.

For the first 30 seconds, the plane jerked rapidly when it moved as Koichi got used to the controls, causing airsickness. But, he managed to turn the plane around, and put it on a collision course for Tokyo Tower.

A flight attendant, Tashiaki Sugihara, contacted ANA Headquarters in Minato, causing this conversation:

    (Translated from Japanese)

    Takano:
This is Reijiro at All Nippon Airways. What do you need?

    Sugihara:
(Hyperventilating) This is Tashiaki Sugihara, we've been hijacked.

    Takano:
    Hijacked? By who?

    Sugihara:
I don't know their names, but 3 people. I know of 3 people who have been stabbed, and we can't get out of the back. They're at the front with knives.

    Takano:
    Flight number?

    Sugihara:
112, Haneda to CER. Dear God... Dear God...

    Takano:
    What?

    Sugihara:
    We're hitting Tokyo Tower! Dear-

(Sound of a loud bang, before the call ends.)

At 10:55, Flight 112 crashed into Tokyo Tower, killing all 277 people on board, plus 116 on the ground, and 274 are wounded. The main cause of death was because of the collapse of the tower, and also the fact that the wings struck the observation deck, which was the source of the massive explosion that led to the collapse of the tower about a minute later.

10 minutes after the crash of Flight 112, Japan Airlines Flight 941 takes off from Narita Airport in Tokyo, bound for Guam. The plane was a Boeing 767-300 with a registration of JA657J with 216 passengers and 8 crew.

The three hijackers, Sozen Iwakiri, Tenshin Murata, and Etsuya Ichioka sat in 15D, 15E, and 15G. They got up, knocked on the cockpit door, and when they didn't get a response, kicked it open, and killed Captain Tsugahara Edamitsu, and First Officer Seinosuke Yamanami. Sozen entered the cockpit, and immediately started to turn the plane around. Sozen, pressing the wrong button, transmitted this signal to the Air Traffic Controllers instead of the PA system.

    (Translated from Japanese)

    Sozen:
We are going back to the airport. Do not worry.

    Tokyo Center:
Why are you going back to the airport?

    Sozen:
Be quiet. You're not supposed to hear this.

He then shut the transponder off, and stopped communicating with Tokyo Center shortly after that. He then turned the plane around, and immediately started to aim at the Tokyo Skytree, using landmarks in order to find it.

At 11:21, Flight 941 crashes into the Tokyo Skytree, killing all 269 people on board, and crashing into the lower floors. This severely damaged most means to go upstairs, but people managed to escape.

At 11:56, the building collapses, falling directly onto an adjacent building, and throughout the several minutes between the plane hitting and the building collapsing, 352 died, and 559 were wounded.

This caused, for several minutes, NHK, Nippon Television, TV Asahi, and various other television and radio broadcasts, to stop transmitting, causing massive disruption and for news of the crash of Flights 941 and 112 to be severely delayed.

Nothing. If you look in the THICC colur scheme, the nearly turquoise colour that Canada has denotes "ultra-free".

So why are some democratic countries Free and other ultra-free? Minor differences in regulation?

I will provide you with an example here: In East Germany ("Free") you do have restrictions, e.g. relating to hate speech or apologeticism for totalitarian regimes. An article/book openly glorifying the United Soviets of Africa or the Tawantinsuyu Directorate would constitute a criminal offence, much like in OTL Holocaust denial is a criminal offence, called Volksverhetzung, in Germany. In the "ultra-free" nations, such regulations either don't exist or at least do not criminalise people.

@Whiteshore , that is another factor: How diverse or dominated are media outlets.

This would also include a Press workers Syndicate having a monopoly right?
    Thank you for the information.

Yeah, but why should one organisation have a monopoly? Do you still imagine Syndicalism as that totalitarian?
