Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

Here's my flag for Greater London:

It incorporates the flag of London, The coat of arms of the Greater London Council, and the white bars from the Metropolitan Police, who took control after a string of riots against Great Britain's government. The citzens of London voted for secession from the failing kingdom, under the leadership of the Greater London Council

Here is my Flag of Greater Tokyo, The Sun & Leaf:

The red sun is the crest of Tokyo, and the green leaf symbolizes the Ginkgo Tree, the Tree of Tokyo.

My Flag for Greater Tokyo, after the break-up of Japan in the Kaiju Wars. It interweaves the two main symbols of Tokyo into one.

Does this mean that my Greater London entry of yesterday (see post #256 of this thread) is disqualified?

No I just think that some people don't read the Challenges ;):

Yaay, a win for me. Nice flags all around, and sorry for the delay in getting the challenge posted - I was out of town and only just got back.

New Challenge #19: Conurbation-States!

Here is a list of some of the world's largest conurbations. Design a flag for one of them on the assumption that it secedes from whatever country/state/province/etc. it currently resides in a becomes a sovereign entity of its own.

Now here's the tricky part: ONLY ONE ENTRY PER CONURBATION IS ALLOWED ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS. So if your chosen Conurbation has a flag posted before you're done, you'll have to change to another.

The List:
  • Randstad (Neth)
  • Rhine-Ruhr (Ger)
  • Golden Horseshoe (Can)
  • NY Tri-State (US)
  • Bay Area (US)
  • Baltimore-Washington (US)
  • Greater London (UK)
  • Greater Tokyo (Jap)
Good Luck!

I think we should allow multiple same-option entries. We already have two Greater London and Greater Tokyo now anyway. And to be quite honest, I didn't like the limitation to begin with. It seems like it would discourage creativity.
Anyway, was there a special reason for limiting the entries to only one per option?

So people won't have to decide between cities.

I did read the challenge, I was making the flag when he posted. I was watching the entry page, not the other page

I've already had to change directions twice, as someone posted a flag for a particular conurbation while I was creating one for it as well.

truely I think that's all the "one flag only" thing has done. If we could call it before we started making it instead of working on a flag for an hour only to find it was already taken

Following the break up of the State of California . . .
In 2021, the flag of the Bay Area Independence Movement became the official flag of the new State of Pacifica.

I did in fact read the one per conurbation rule, I just decided to ignore it because I believe the rule to be an ill-advised one.

And now I present the flag of the democratic-socialist, gay and marijuana friendly state known as the Commonwealth of San Francisco:

Hear hear! Free the Flags!!

I was wondering if someone would work in a Golden Gate motif.

my challenge, folks, was to encourage speed AND quality - if you wanted to get your chosen city in, you had to do it quick. This isn't just about design, but design under pressure. So Ah-Sue's London is in, as is AustinMontreal's Tokyo and Lord Gratton's Bay Area. MadMC, Glen and Kirix are welcome to enter another flag for an unflagged city.

But with the delay in posting the challenge, we couldn't be certain when it was beginning, hence we couldn't discover the challenge and any restrictions on entries until we checked back at the later time. I actually have things I need to do, and I can only fit in so much time to check this and then work on flag submission. Because of that, I didn't discover the new challenge or its restrictions until much after a number of others had already done so. Besides, the number of flag submissions for this challenge has already exceeded the number of cities you have given us (one of which, Randstadt, would in fact take out most of the Netherlands with it thus making it not a flag of a new country but rather an alternate flag of a reduced Netherlands).

EDIT:
Oh and thanks for the support Glen.

EDIT2:
Additionally, I'm a Bay Area brat. That's my town, and I will make a flag for it as is my potentially-drug-induced-hallucination given right.
