I don't believe I posted this here yet, but here is an attempt at experimenting with non-Earth basemaps from a little while ago. The Idea came to me on a whim: What if I gave Legend of Korra the VME Treatment? For those who don't know, VME is Vivere Militare Est, a Scenario by rvbomally where the Nazis use Eldritch Horrors in an attempt to win WW2. In this scenario, the same thing happens, but with Kuvira's Earth Empire in the place of the Nazis uncovering the eldritch horrors.

Avatar Korra's early years were a time of great change in the very nature of the world. The Battle against her uncle and the chaos-spirit, Vaatu, resulted in the Opening of the Spirit Portals at the North and South Poles, allowing Spirits to live among humans again. Only a year later, The Earth Queen would be killed by the Red Lotus cult, destroying the Earth Kingdom. However, order would be restored by the Great Uniter, a Zaofu Metalbender named Kuvira. Kuvira was a women of many great feats, restoring order to the Earth Kingdom in only 3 years, either through her charisma or through her military might (With the help of the Billionaire Varrick's technological innovations). However, on the day the rightful heir to the throne, prince Wu, was to be crowned, Kuvira made a world-changing speech announcing that the Earth Kingdom was no more, in its place would be the Earth Empire, an Empire that would not be bullied or become a puppet of Outside Powers.

Kuvira's Earth Empire was a massive entity, with many divisions doing research into different sectors. However, one of the most notable divisions was the Spirit Research Division, under General Xian. General Xian launched numerous expeditions into the Spirit World during the Unification Wars, but during one particular expedition, Xian's team came across the ultimate treasure: The Library of Wan Shi Tong, He who knows ten-thousand things. Despite the Owl Spirit's defense, the team was able to restrain the mighty knowledge spirit. While searching the Library, the team came across a sealed off section of the Library. Wan Shi Tong warned them not to enter, but they did so without hesitation, and within they found long forgotten texts speaking of Dark Spirits older than the Human World. However, the books offered something that fascinated Xian: ways they could be weaponized.

Upon returning home, Xian offered his findings to Kuvira, who was impressed by their discoveries. The Earth Empress was in need of a great new weapon, one that her chief scientist Varrick was unable to provide, although the Spirit Vines proved an efficient power source. Kuvira learned that they could summon the Dark Spirits and command them through elaborate rituals, rituals that would require sacrifices. Kuvira was initially off-put by this, but decided that it was for the good of her nation. Using the various Non-Earthbenders she had rounded up in her conquests, Kuvira's "Sages" began to perform long-forgotten rituals, summoning dark, eldritch spirits from the deepest, coldest part of the Spirit World, the part that was best left forgotten. Along with the Dark Spirits, Kuvira used forgotten power to enhance her own troops, turning them into monsters of flesh and steel. Desiring a test for her new weapons, Kuvira unleashed her new "Mogwai" warriors onto several bandit villages, showing no mercy for the people who brought chaos to her nation. After deeming her new weapons viable, Kuvira decided it was now time to move onto the ultimate prize: Republic City.

The Second Battle of Republic City started out smoothly for the Empire. The Forces of the Earth Empire, made up of Earthbenders, Metalbenders, the advanced machines made by Varrick, and the Dark forces backing them. Some simply ripped their enemies apart, while others took control of their enemies or their equipment and used them against their comrades. The battle seemed to be won, but the tide would be turned. In response to this "Spiritual heresy," many nations, formerly neutral, pledged their support to the United Republic against what they saw as a dark foe. Despite what Kuvira and General Xian previously thought, they were not the first to discover these Dark Spirits. The Sages of the Fire Nation and their counterparts in other nations had the knowledge that these spirits existed, but did not speak of them for fear of drawing their attention. And in Republic City, Bolin, a former member of Kuvira's inner circle, told the President of Republic City what would be coming. Realizing that now was not the time to keep zipped lips, the spiritual leaders of the world approached their national leaders and presented them with the key to stopping Kuvira's forces. Using rituals that enhanced their own soldiers, the Armies of the Fire Nation and Water Tribes came to the aid of the Unite Republics, starting a true battle of Good and Evil.

However, the battle would have no true winner. In truth, the Dark Spirits were not loyal to Kuvira at all. They were merely pretending as a way to get more of their own into the Mortal world, and when their numbers were great enough, they turned on Kuvira's forces, with Dark Spirits slaughtering Humans in the streets of the once proud Republic City. The effects of the battle would be felt beyond the Republic. At both spirit portals, Dark Spirits poured into the Human World, killing all who stood in their path. In various corners of the world, Benders suddenly went insane as their chi became corrupted by the influx of Dark Spirits entering the Human world, throwing off the balance. While many of the more powerful Benders were able to pull through or resist, Many succumbed to the whispers of darkness and became slaves to the dark spirits, either directly or indirectly. To make matters worse, a gateway was opened to the Fog of Lost Souls, resulting in many formerly dead humans re-entering the Human World to terrorize the living.

Realizing they now shared a mutual threat, one that would do what Vaatu tried to do 3 years before, the Earth Empire and the other Nations came to an agreement that they would cease fighting and protect the world from this new threat. The Next year was brutal for the world. With the help of Avatar Korra and the new Air Nation, the Nations of the world would fight off the Mogwai and secure most of their territories once more, although not everyone was lucky, as shown with Republic City and the Sandbenders. While the Nations of the world were unable to take back areas of high Mogwai infestation or allegiance, they were able to at least contain them. After a year of brutal fighting, Earth Empress Kuvira, Fire Lord Izumi, Water Chiefs Tonraq, Eska and Desna, Tenzin, President Raiko, and Avatar Korra had a meeting in Yu Dao, establishing a concorde to protect Humans and Spirits from the Mogwai that remained. While they would never be able to destroy them all, they would be able to effectively contain them, setting up quarantine zones around the world and agreeing not to recognize any of the "Mogwai States." Aside from this, the nations of the world could agree on little. The Earth Empire distrusted the Fire Nation, and the issue of Zaofu, who revolted and regained independence during the year of fighting, resulted in the Earth Empire remaining distrustful of the other nations, with other nations being equally distrustful of the new Earth Empire, due to Kuvira's xenophobic rhetoric. Despite these disagreements, Avatar Korra made it her duty to keep the peace between Humans with the help of her teammates.

It has been 30 years, Avatar Korra continues to maintain the balance, even if age and her poisoning by Zaheer have made her weaker than she used to be. The United Republic of Nations is under the presidency of Bolin and Opal's younger Daughter (their oldest Son is a General in the United Forces). Raiko had no chance of being re-elected after his poor handling of the Mogwai crisis (trying to retake Republic City to boost morale ended with a good chunk of the United Forces butchered) and President Zhu-Li, while effective, didn't inspire confidence, and suffered a scandal due to being accused of being an Earth Empire plant. The Fire Nation is under the rule of Fire Lord Iroh II, who has taken a strong stance against the Dark Spirits compared to other nations. Along with the rest of the world, the Fire Nation was hit hard by the Dark Spirit crisis, and while the mainland is secure, most of the outlying islands are still prowled by Darkbenders, benders who have pledged their loyalty to the Dark Spirits in exchange for great power, with the villagers of these islands at the mercy of their brutal overlords, of whom Iroh II declares will be crushed before he dies. This aggressive rhetoric, while inspiring to the people of the Fire Nation, has led some to worry that the Fire Nation may be reverting back to its old ways, although Ambassador Mako II assures everyone that the Fire Nation knows what is best.

To the East, the Earth Empire remains under the fist of Earth Empress Kuvira. With most Non-Earthbenders having left the country long ago, Kuvira has dropped her policy of imprisoning or deporting Non-Earthbenders. However, the Imperial Government does show preference for Metalbenders over regular Earthbenders, with almost every high ranking member of the Empire being Metalbenders like the Empress, including the Earth Princess, daughter of Kuvira and Bataar Jr. Relations with outside powers could be far better, as Kuvira has taken an isolationist stance with regards to the other nations (with exceptions regarding the Dark Spirits), and Imperial Propaganda portrays outside nations with disdain, particularly the democratic institutions of the United Republic and the "Backwards Monarchy" of the Fire Nation. While Kuvira has modernized the Earth Empire, her government is still repressive, but efficient...In the areas where it still has control. Despite the outside image of a fascist regime, Kuvira is actually rather popular amongst her people, having instituted various Reforms that have made her beloved among the Peasantry and working class, much to the dismay of the Nobles whose money is redistributed to make this possible. However, this system only applies in the area where the Empire can enforce its rule. In truth, Kuvira was only successfully able to secure the Northern Territories around Ba Sing Se after the Mogwai Crisis. To the south of the Serpents pass, Imperial Authority remains theoretical at best, with various pretender kingdoms attempting to emerge among the Darkbenders and other wannabe warlords, combined with the large amount of Exclusion zones dotting the landscape, Kuvira's dream of a United Earth Empire is still just a dream. Despite this, The Imperial Army remains massive, and is highly effective at fighting the Darkbenders that constantly pop up in the poorer regions of the Empire. Recently, the Army has been doing some more experimentation with the Spirit Vines based on some old Unification-Era research. Kuvira's scientists claim that they may be able to use the vines to create a weapon that can destroy the Mogwai once and for all.

Across the World, the Mogwai's influence can be felt. In the North, the Water Tribe wages a civil war between the Dark powers and the forces of Humanity. It started a few years after the Mogwai Crisis when, out of the spirit portal, Chief Unalaq appeared. Upon his sudden appearance, he made his way to the palace and demanded his children step down. However, this Unalaq was actually a Mogwai impersonating the dead chief in an attempt to get a foothold into the Northern Water Tribe. The Twins were not fooled by the imposter and immediately attacked. Despite this, many in the Northern Tribe were fooled and pledged their loyalty to "Unalaq" resulting in bloody fighting that has been ongoing for years, with no end in sight. Despite the Unalaq faction having Mogwai support, and the Eska/Desna faction having the backing of the other nations, no side has made much progress, with the only secure part of the North being the Capital, which was fortified against the Mogwai after the first battle. "Unalaq" leads his forces from the Spirit World, rarely showing himself and mainly speaking through his commanders. The other nations back the Northern Tribe the best they can, but recent activities by the Fire Nation have led some in the North to believe that Iroh II doesn't intend to leave, as the reported treatment of Waterfolk by the Fire Army's "Liberators" has shown. Of course, Iroh II insists that he is doing what has to be done to stop the Dark Spirits, even if he has to stoop to the level of his great-grandfathers.

To the South, things are a little bit different. Things are relatively peaceful and, thanks to Varrick Industries, the Southern Water Tribe has caught up with the rest of the world in terms of Technology. However, most of the South's resources are put into containing the Southern Portal, from which "Unalaq" occasionally tries to launch attacks. However, the true threat in the South is a scar from the hundred years war. Dead men are walking, as the Frozen Corpses of fallen Southern Raiders have risen from their icy graves, possesed by their old spirits. As a result of their actions in upsetting the balance by killing the Waterbenders of the Southern Tribe, many of the fallen Raiders ended up in the Fog of Lost Souls. The Mogwai crisis resulted in the opening of a gateway from the Fog to the Human World, with many lost souls returning to the Human World to wreak havoc. For the Raiders, their years of being trapped in the fog combined with now being confined within their frozen, rotting bodies has driven them insane. They are Revenants, completely incapable of being reasoned with, Unable to speak for the most part beyond angry growls (Although there have been reports of them saying something incomprehensible), Have outdated values dating back to Azulon's reign, killing any they come across, specifically going out of their way to target WaterBenders, and primarily attacking during the Summer, primarily during the day, when they can Firebend (They can't Firebend at night, but being warriors, they can sure as hell improvise). Moreover, Their bloodlust will never be sated until they complete their orders Fire Lord Azulon gave them when they were still alive: To kill every Waterbender in the Southern Water Tribe.

That isn't to say there aren't any Darkbenders in the Southern Water Tribe. At the end of the Mogwai Crisis, many of the Southern Darkbenders fled, taking most of the Southern Fleet with them. While this weakened the South initially, Trade managed to get the Tribe back on its feet. The Dark Water Tribe, as many have come to call it, are constantly on the move and making constant raids on the Earth Empire and Fire Nation for sacrifices. These Sacrifices are necessary to protect them from the Mogwai that lurk in the ocean, ones that devour entire ships just to sate their appetite. The United Forces has tried to take them out, but they have found this difficult due to their constantly being on the move and the fact that they use forbidden techniques, such as bloodbending, to fight their foes. While many have created procedures for dealing with this Dark Tribe, many have simply dropped the Sea as a means of travel, opting for Air travel instead.

In the Fire Nation, the most prominent anti-Iroh group is the Order of the Lightning Bolt. Starting as an organization of Fire Nationalists who missed the good old days, the OotLB eventually came to be dominated by Darkbenders, who outright worship Ozai and his predecessors as Patron Spirits. Deeming all other benders as inferior, members of the order are all expected to be able to bend lightning or be killed. Their end goal is to take over the Fire Nation and finish what Fire Lord Sozin started. However, the Earth Empire remains the nation most afflicted by the Darkbenders. After the Mogwai Crisis, General Xian walked out after a disagreement, and took his Sages with him, starting his own personal fiefdom in the Spirit World. Many thought he was dead, but he still lives, and he has discovered how to open portals to the Human World wherever he pleases, allowing him to launch raids anywhere he pleases, capturing Sacrifices so that the Mogwai will allow him and his demented followers to continue on with their depraved lives. On the opposite end are Dark folks who aren't even Benders. The Equalists have made a resurgence in the Earth Empire and United Republics. Seemingly under the rule of Amon (No one knows he died in this TL), who has been blessed and now must continue his Spiritual mission of removing the bending of every bender on Earth, this time with the guidance of the Mogwai. However, little do "Amon's" followers know that their leader isn't even human, but a Trickster Spirit who took the form of Noatak and actually has ulterior motives. Each time he removes the bending of a Bender, he gains their chi and becomes more and more powerful, and once he gets strong enough, he can become the Ultimate Mogwai and make the world his plaything. In the United Republic, Varrick industries has transformed into a rogue, machine-worshipping cult, Varrick's unique strain of "creativity" having drawn the interest of Chessmaster Spirits. However, unlike the other cults and darkbenders, who operate from the shadows or wage open warfare, Varrick Industries remains popular on the public front. All of the sacrifices and other evils committed by the Corporation are done in secret and no one outside of the upper echelons of the company even knows about the dark secrets behind how Varrick Industries suddenly began producing such extraordinary technology.

On the plus side, the Air Nation has been doing quite well. Due to their spirituality, very few Airbenders were affected by the Mogwai Crisis. Like before, the Air Nation assists Avatar Korra in keeping the peace and protecting the innocent from the Mogwai. Unfortunately, the Air Nation suffers from the same problems as before, being vastly overstretched, and Avatar Korra herself is just one person who can't be everywhere at once, meaning most Nations rely on themselves for defense. On the downside, some Airbenders have been corrupted by the Mogwai, and these Rogues have fled to the Western Air Temple, where they remain isolated from the rest of the world, dropping the Pacifism of the Air Nation in favor of the Social Darwinism practiced by the Mogwai, with any Non-Benders are anyone who shows weakness being sacrificed to the Dark Ones. Speaking of Airbenders, Zaheer broke out of his prison in the chaos of the Mogwai Crisis and took lead of the Red Lotus once more. However, no one seems to know Zaheer's true motives, as while he is no friend of the Governments of the world, he has consistently been reported fighting the Mogwai, indicating that the Red Lotus may be neutrals in this conflict.

History is playing out and Technology is evolving, The United Republics was able to put Men into space, with the Earth Empire following closely behind, allowing them to create space stations and even a base on the Moon. Back on Earth, Technology has progressed. Varrick Industries has revolutionized the Mover Industry once more by bringing it into the average household in the form of a device known as "The Mover Box." The rest of the world adopted this device along with the Republic, with the Earth Empire in particular using it to win the hearts and minds of its people. Over in the Earth Empire, the Equalist Airplane designs have been found and upgraded to be Larger and Faster, able to move people quickly across the Empire. At the moment, they are used primarily by the Military, but in the near future, civilian use could be a possibility. And on the other side, Future Industries has created a new type of Flying Machine capable of hovering via vertical propellers and capable of taking off and landing while stationary, with almost every nation buying these new devices and using them as an effective way of fighting the Darkbenders (And in the case of the Earth Empire and some in the Fire Nation, ignoring the rules of engagement). And in the Fire Nation, a nation-wide Electric grid has been established, ensuring every home in the secure Fire Nation has power.

However, it is believed that change will come in the near future. In 1 year, Sozin's Comet will return, and the Powers of the world have an ambitious plan known as "Operation Firestorm," using the power boost granted to Firebenders to finally wipe out the Mogwai once and for all and send them back to the Dark realm from which they came. However, Scientists have their concerns. Dark Spirit Power, known as "Dark Chi" has become a part of Humanity at this point. Mogwai are physically made of the stuff, and when harvested, it has proven to be an efficient source of energy for the people of the Nations. However, Astronomers in these Space Bases have launched missions to recover samples from the Great Comet. The Samples were retrieved, and tests have revealed that the Sozin's Comet actually contains large amounts of Dark Chi on it. This means that while Firebenders will still get their power boost, so will the Mogwai. To make things worse, Humanity has yet to see the most powerful Mogwai. Deep in the darkest parts of the Spirit World, Malicious and Sociopathic Beings laugh with an unquenchable thirst for blood. They know Sozin's Comet will make them stronger, perhaps even strong enough to finally cross over and claim the Earth as their own. The final battle between Good and Evil approaches and will end either with Humanity Victorious, or the Earth becoming a playground of Dark Spirits.

Wait, considering the BWEEEEEEEEWWWWMM spirit laser canon, wasn't that basically what they were doing anyway?

Hi. Does anyone knows the source/creator of this map? Ever since I saw it randomly on Discord I was wondering it's source

Thanks and hope anyone knows
I wish I had an answer for you, but I don't. This map is gorgeous and I'd love to know its source. It's cute seeing my Vulcan, Underworld (labeled Pellucidar) and a few alt-astronomy moons (Neith and Cadeucus) on here. I really should get to updating some of those things.

Its from the Monster Mash 1914 Map Game and as was already said was made by CannedTech. I would love to know where he kept his maps.

Yeah, that's CannedTech work (source, I was helping him with it). He's been busy these last few years due to real-life obligations such as attending art college and whatnot. We both like to finish the epilogue for that game, but like all things people get distracted by IRL or new projects. Maybe someday we'll finish it, someday.

Yes, it's from the user CannedTech, now banned.

Wow. Thanks a lot in identifying it. Anyone has any ideas on how can I contact him now since he's banned?, Would love to just give a big praise to creating it and have basically all the info surrounding from the map. This map has been fascinating me since I found it and other users just for how utterly insane it is.

I did find the thread the map game came from tho https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/monster-mash-1914-no-mans-land.435457/ . Gonna read it later

I'm gonna read it too. I'm particularly interested in when the Underworld/Pellucidar got introduced into the setting; I never intended for that map to be a base map for others or a canonical portrayal of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar, it was mostly just a proof of concept for how underground worlds could be portrayed. It's probably worth updating at some point.

Maybe Vichy France left while French Resistance (disputable true successor of the 3rd Republic) stayed?
That's my guess. Looking at it, you see how few nation/colony-level administrative divisions there were - counting colonies as 1st level you get 126 ones large enough to be counted/shown on the map, not counting Mandates

Okay, I'm sitting at my computer desk. It's time for another bored at work!

Here is a map of present-day North America in my "Anthony Wayne" timeline. I have no idea how all this happens yet, but I figured this was a relatively-unique take on a balkanized North America. Can't wait to get there in my writing.

Nice map.

Is the Empire of Lousiana French? I'm curious why it took the name Louisiana if it evolved from a surviving New France - Based purely on the population of the Great Lakes and Quebec, it would look like the Canada half would have the higher population.

As well, the country named Canada in your map has none of the historic provinces of Canada, which were Ontario and Quebec. Was Louisiana and Canada one country which split? If not, and the brown country evolved from British holdings in the Hudson Bay area and Oregon country, it would take a different name. Some geographic name like Hudsonia, Assiniboine, Athabasca, Saskatchewan, or some Britsh colony name like Albion, Borealia, or Cascadia.

A no-ARW World that isn't just a Dominion/Empire of America thing with actual balkanization is interesting. Also, is Hawaii a British protectorate?
Yeah, Dominions of North America are interesting but that's not necessarily the most likely outcome.

I hadn't given much thought to Hawaii but being under British rule is the most likely thing here so I will say that it is a protectorate ITTL.
