The Empire Parnell Built

Basically the USA is the OTL continental USA: Alaska is an independent republic and Hawaii was never annexed (but was a British protectorate for a bit). As for how it suddenly gained 500 million 'extra' people... all I'll say is that the lack of European countries in the top 30 is a big hint...
France is bigger, yet has a smaller population, with a lower GDP and GDP per capita. And there is no Germany or Italy, or some partial state. Or Spain, or Portugal...

Oh.

Oh...

Oh...

Oh dear...

France: 1983 elections [OLD]
The French elections of 1983 were held on 30 October and marked the return of constitutional rule following a period of military dictatorship since 1976. They were the first elections of the Seventh Republic and saw voters choosing the President, members of the National Assembly and their respective departmental legislators. With a turnout of 85.6%, the moderate Civic Union won both the presidency and a majority in the National Assembly, in both cases ahead of the Gaullist Republican Party.

The Sixth Republic had been inaugurated in 1973, following a seven-year period of military rule. The Gaullist victor in the 1973 elections, Jacques Chaban-Delmas, however failed to get to grips with the recurrent problems of financial instability, inflation, endemic corruption and violent race relations. Chaban-Delmas' left wing policies also exacerbated existing divisions between left wing and right wing Gaullists, leading many of the latter to conclude that another period of military government would be beneficial. The leader of the junta that seized power in 1976, General Alain de Boissieu, was the son-in-law of Charles de Gaulle and initially ruled in cohabitation with rightist Gaullist politicians but his government gradually drifted to the right over the years. An attempt to militarily seize the Channel Islands in 1982 ended in an embarrassing defeat for France and the occupation of Paris by the Indian Army. Boissieu remained president but was forced to call a constitutional convention under League of Nations supervision.

Boissieu's final act before the election campaign began was to issue an amnesty for those involved in the last seven years of dictatorship (including himself) which aroused significant controversy. The centrist Civic Union nominated Jean Lecanuet as their candidate and he focused his campaign on accusing the Republicans, who had refused to condemn the amnesty and had in some cases participated in the dictatorship, of enjoying Boissieu's tacit support. Lecanuet also enjoyed the support of a number of dissident and exiled French intellectuals and artists, including Roland Barthes. The Republicans struggled with intraparty tensions between the left and the right. Their chosen candidate, Charles Pasqua, came from the party's right wing but limited his campaign largely to an evocation of the much-admired former President Charles de Gaulle.

Bitter memories of the dictatorship and Chaban-Delmas' underwhelming tenure resulted in a solid victory for the Civic Union. However, the lifting of regulations against labour unions led to a wave of strikes as economic problems (mostly inherited from the dictatorship) persisted and deepened. Undermined by events, Lecanuet would only serve one term and be defeated by the Gaullist candidate Jacques Chirac in the 1989 presidential elections.

Sport: Most valuable men's cricket leagues
Because it wouldn't be one of my timelines without random diversions into sport, right? Politics service will resume shortly - I've got planned updates on Britain, Italy and Argentina which should really give shape to this world - but I think this list is interesting in giving hints as to the wider world. I'm holding off on a world map just yet but that should come soon(ish).

Would it be this fellow? How did he come to be the leader of a coup?

It certainly is. The basic idea is that Germany wins the WW1 equivalent and concedes to an 'honourable' peace and partition at the end of the WW2 equivalent, meaning they avoid the revolutions (of either 1918 or Nazi flavour) and the aristocracy and military remain very heavily involved in political life going forward.

Why did Alaska become an independent republic? The US already had purchased it before the TLs PoD and there isn't any reason for them to not keep it. Especially since independence wasn't a thing until Joe Vogler started the Alaskan Independence Party in the 80s.

As for the rest I'm guessing outside the British Empire and Danubia that Europe is a complete disaster alongside the US not tightening immigration in the 20s like OTL.

Damn straight they are. Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan too. More to come on India soonish. I've come up with a pleasantly nuts political system for them that I hope to explain in a post later on.
How?
Nepal and Bhutan were recognized as independent protectorates after the 1857 Indian Rebellion by the British government. Trying to integrate Nepal and Bhutan, both of whom were Chinese tributary states as well, would trigger war with Nepal, Bhutan and China.

The 1932 Indian general election was held on 1-29 February 1932, just over two weeks after the dissolution of the People's Chamber on 12 January. It was the fifth election since the Government of India Act 1919 had granted responsible government to India. Elections used the single transferable vote electoral system. Elections for the 15 representative princes to the Prince's Chamber occurred at the same time.

What is the difference between the All-India League and the Swaraj Party?

Also, realized something: the 1983 French Elections and the 1964 German Coup are basically expies of the 1983 Argentine Elections and 1964 Brazilian Coup.

It remains a US territory until the 1930s when, owing to the vagaries of US internal politics, it is given Commonwealth status (a la OTL Puerto Rico) rather than statehood, which then transitions to de jure independence in the 1980s/90s once the oil boom takes off.

Did the United States conquer/annex Western Continental Europe?
Nope.

Both of them are incorporated into the Raj as princely states as part of an agreement with China in 1919 to formalise international boundaries in the Himalayas. Coming at the same time as Indian legislative independence, this gives Nepal and Bhutan domestic autonomy (not to mention no enforced changes to their political system) and a seat each in the upper house.

What is the difference between the All-India League and the Swaraj Party?
The basic idea is that the AIL is more of a big-tent cross-community party with centre-left tendencies whereas Swaraj has a more socialist feel (of the tinge that name implies) but also Hindu-chauvinist edges.

Ya' got me - up to a point. The idea was to use those more direct transpositions as ways of giving people a feel for my inspirations and what I'm trying to do with this TL. The actual nitty gritty of the history will diverge much more and not be a direct transposition.
