Which side owned Syria and Alexandretta?
Which Syria? Alexandretta is Ottoman.
There's no coastal Syria in TTL. In fact there's no Syria at all. The levantine coast north of Beirut remains Ottoman. TTL Mashriq Republic does hold the coast from Haifa to Jaffa though.
I see Iraqis and Egyptians dominating this Mashriq Republic/Emirate.
The one I envisioned was a state with only Levant as its core territory, perhaps with a few miles of desert as the buffer, but Levantine culture dominates.
No Iraq either.
And the Mashriqis, whether of Damascus or Baghdad or Ha'il, are opposed to any external interference by the Egyptian Caliphate.
Indeed. Such a state would be interesting.
The deadline will be extended for fifteen hours due to the breakdown. Any more submissions?
So while we're at it. Can anyone design a flag of an arab sultanate that consists of morocco, western sahara, algeria, tunisia and sicily? I'd prefer something simple, yet sophisticated. The empasis should lay on islam. Black is alright however, it should also have some other fitting colors. I'd prefer something colourful though.
You can try it yourself. It's just MS Paint, not that hard.
I wish I could. But this time no.
Poll Is Up
Congratulations @BelfastBrawler (winning post), it’s your turn to post the new challenge, and post a new question, here is a guide for you.
Hopefully no one will be angry about this...
You terrible terrible man!
The Rose and Sun
This Valentine's Day flag draws on the symbolism associated with Saint Valentine (a rose), romantic love (the color red) and invincibility (the Sun disc).
Sometimes the flag is also adorned with the official motto of Valentine's Day "Amor Vincit Omnia", but those versions are not officially endorsed. The use of nickname "The Rose and Sun" referring to the flag is, on the other hand, strongly encouraged.
EDIT: fixed the invisible border that was annoying me.
Flag of the FFF Inquisition
FFF Inquisition is an organization of singles who keep their single status holy, and seek to punish those with attention from the opposite sex due to the fact that they are all without this attention.
Members of the organization wear clothes that covers his/her whole body, leaving only hole for their eyes to see, like the K.K.K.. But unlike the K.K.K., their hatred is inspired not by racism, but by contempt for romance. And their clothes are black, as contrasted to white.
For members of this organization, getting involved in a relationship is a crime punishable by death through burning at the stake, or through burning on a cross. This came from their own sense of torment whenever they see a couple. The FFF inquisition secretly wishes all couples to be burned to death, because all of them deserve it. A trial must be held for the crime before burning, for the sanctity of single status demands justice (thus "inquisition")
Punishments are specially harsh for those who display their affections overtly in the open, like, those who kiss each other in a library, or those who talk cute on the road, or those who come out for shopping, holding hands, wearing costumes during Christmas*, since all those actions incurs jealousy, loneliness, sense of worthlessness and self-pity in the hearts of the freemen.
This is why Valentine's Day is viewed with special contempt, as it's the day when singles suffer the most. So, prepare firewood and gasoline, the great burning will begin.
The flag of the FFF inquisition is a monogram of the organization overlaying a burning black cross, symbolizing the punishment. A broken heart in the canton signifies the members' feelings.
*Foth those of you who don't know, for non-Christians in East Asia, Christmas is increasingly becoming a consumerist festival for dating and other activities with strangers.
The Amorous Imperium
It was in the reign of Gaius Caesar, when he was of flesh, that the Imperium took shape. The failed plot on his life saw to the end of the last vestiges of a dying Republic. Surviving his wounds, Gaius would find his wife murdered, his daughter almost killed before he slew the madmen who tried to harm her. In an act of fury, he stood before the people of Rome and called on them to act, and with his mob, he had the Senators dragged from the Curia, the guards and soldiers only watching on in fear that they would join them. These men were torn to pieces, stabbed, strangled, burned, and violated as the Imperator watched with glee. With this act, the Cleansing of Rome, so were the foundations laid for the Amorous Imperium. Hedonism became the status quo as greater lavishness grew amongst the populace, emulating their great leader. With this boon to his prestige, Gaius had the army whipped into a fervor, conquering southern Britannia and pushing more into Germania.
Upon his death, he was recognized a god, Caligula, God of Glory and Pleasure, and his cult, which venerated his sister Drusilla, recognized him as being descended from Venus, and their power and size grew over the ages, first under Caligula's daughter, and then under subsequent imperators and imperatrixes, each adding to Rome's glory, furthering a culture of lust, love, and pleasure. Soon the old gods faded as Caligula's power grew, eclipsing even Sol Invictus. Strife would eventually strike the empire as it made its final attempts to conquer all of Europe proper, reaching from Hibernia to the Uralia, from Scania to Mauretania. In this period of internal struggle, the Empire saw itself divided between three factions; the Purists, who sought an end to centuries of hedonism; the Dolorists, who taught pleasure from pain; and the Amorists who taught the love and compassion could unite all. Eventually, the latter two factions came together with common bonds of creating more unified, hedonistic states, and crushed the Purists. Soon, all of Rome's resources, once used for war, turned fully and utterly to pleasure.
Sex and intimacy are ubiquitous, the line between platonic and romantic being a matter of context and mood. There is no such thing as 'single', there is only a matter of preference for individuals. There is no Valentine's Day or equivalent holiday, because every day is Valentine's Day, a celebration of love and lust, and closeness between someone and their desired partner as of that moment. As the nation has moved forward in technology, everything has focused around perpetuating a life of total indulgence. The Cult of Caligula reigns supreme, and the imperial family in the venerated standard of all beauty and fashion.
Their flag takes the color of the Imperium, as seen in the clothes of the imperator, and places on it a gold sigil. It displays laurels of prosperity, framing the silphium seed, which has become widely produced and selectively grown to become a near perfect natural contraceptive and shared in seed-shaped packages. The seed is a symbol of the Imperium and its way of life, and above it is the motto of the nation: Amor Vincit Omnia, Love Conquers All.
