For those kingdoms which Mars gives to others, let Venus give to thee. (Or the only way to get the Franco-Swedish-Ottoman-Russo-Mughal-Thai alliance)

Nice map. Love the "old-timey, incomplete Renaissance map"-type theme. Is that uncolored bit in north America uncolonized or a possession of another power? (perhaps the French... though even if that is the case, between the combined naval forces of England and Spain, I don't imagine it'll survive for long. Wouldn't the Habsburgs want the symbolic glory of being of ruler of the entire New World?)

In 1805, the southron republics of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina unite to form the ‘United and Sovereign States of Columbia’ over concerns of the viability of going it alone (all three having small populations and economies, and their governments increasingly coming into conflict with the Cherokee and Muskogee indians). The Virginia Legislature votes to join the new nation a little over a year later.
Under its constitution, The member states of Columbia are (officially) near completely autonomous and independent of each other, free to govern themselves as they see fit (Provided that none of their laws are deemed unconstitutional). The national government is only granted jurisdiction over matters of foreign, military, and economic policy, and the nebulous “concerns of public safety”. In recent years however, the government has de facto transitioned into a centralized strong man dictatorship.

Why do South Carolina and Vermont secede? They supported the Federalists; I find it more likely in states like New York, New Hampshire, or Massachusetts where the votes for ratification were far more close.
Vermont didn't historically become a state until 1791. As for South Carolina, it was historically divided on the ratification of the constitution. TTL South Carolina refuses to ratify the constitution due to a perceived anti slavery bias, and far less anti-federalist influence in the drafting of the constitution.

Poor Virginia getting partitioned every time

Does this dictatorship still exist to the modern day or did it go 💥
1854 (the later map date) is the year when the USA declares an all out war on the south, after an exchange of gunfire on the Mississippi river, annexing them after several years of fighting and a patently ridiculous amount of casualties.

Could the US even handle extending its influence west of the Appalachians without dominating the Mississippi too?

The US still controls all of the Mississippi above the 'Kansas Territory', but western expansion has undoubtedly gone slower than it historically did. The rump US has adopted a British style "divide and rule" approach to dealing with American Indian Nations, in contrast to its historical tactics of "kill and deport them all".

The so-called 'Managed' regime at 30: The Hydrological Tyrant of North America

gUvBmbZ.jpg

Since the takeover of the current regime in 2042, the great Interior States - once a shining hope of freedom and prosperity in the world - has become an aggressive bully, demanding for itself total control of the coninent's water. Not, as its so-called 'coordinating committee' claims, to ensure a supply for its own citizens - as though anyone would believe the absurd accusations which justified the occupations of Assiniboia and the south bank of the Ohio. Instead, its goal is to use its control of water to terrorize and bully its neighbors.

Appeasers warn you against the fate of the South - but that was nothing but a show of force, a parade. Green Bay already controls more than 95% of the continent's fresh water - a supply which is drying up by the day. In essence, its goal is to turn us all into little New Mexicos or Texases, totally dependent as they are on Green Bay for the water coming out down the Rio Grande. The real threat is the day, not so long from now, when yet again they decide they want more - maybe full control over the Mississippi, maybe at long last, the Bitterroot, maybe, why not, a foothold over those last few trickles of the Colorado you all depend on - and give us all the choice to roll over or die of thirst. They won't need any fancy planes or tanks if they get what they want - just a switch on their dams.

Make no mistake. The conquest of the South is not an isolated incident. People who call this an ancient cultural hatred going back to the eighteen-whatevers are fooling themselves. The Midwest doesn't have a single neighbor it hasn't invaded or tried to control the government of. It will not stop with the Mississippi basin. It will not stop with the East Coast. If you want to maintain your freedom, and, more importantly, your right to eat and drink, the time to act is now. We need collective defense. We need economic help. We need trust and support for the activists who are risking their lives to bring down the regime. Everything is on the line.

1853: William Ferrier, leader of the newly created National Union Party, defeats Republican incumbent Abraham Hasbrouck in one of the largest landslide victories in US history. he immediately begins stabilizing the crumbling federal government and modernizing the U.S. economy, while greatly expanding the powers of the presidency. sworn into office in the midst of an economic Depression, during his first 100 days Ferrier spearheads unprecedented federal legislative productivity. Famously promising "the end of poverty and a rabbit in every pot", Ferrier implements a series of economic and social welfare policies through a flurry of executive orders and federal legislation. Even managing to pass a bill granting voting suffrage to women over 30 by the slimmest of margins.

1854: The USS George Washington suffers a massive explosion and sinks in the Mississippi near the American-Columbian border, after being instructed to "ensure freedom of navigation for United States shipping" on the river. American newspapers, engaging in yellow journalism to boost circulation, claim that Columbia is responsible for the ship's destruction, despite a lack of evidence. two weeks after the incident, the US government sends an ultimatum to Columbia, demanding that the government of the United Sovereign States of Columbia issue a formal apology for the incident, pay the United states 5 million dollars in damages (over 100 million $ in today's money), and allow American ships completely unrestricted access to the Mississippi river. In response, Columbia severs diplomatic relations with the United States on April 21. On the same day, the U.S. Navy begins a blockade of Columbian ports. On April 23, Columbia reacts to the blockade by declaring war on the US.

What I mean is, what will they do with that part of the Mississippi? The key is all the industry or agriculture can only travel as far downriver as Kentucky before it has to pay (probably heavy) tariffs and possibly suffer corruption and piracy along the rest of the Mississippi and in the Caribbean while the US Navy is based far away in Maryland. Also the Mississippi north of Kentucky is actually not that large. Most of the river's southern breadth and volume come from the Ohio River, so the upper Mississippi is less useful for transportation. Before railroads I think whoever controls New Orleans or will have a massive bonus in settling and controlling the Mississippi watershed.

What's the capital of the USA and USC in this world?

This reminds me of this wikibox made by @King of the Uzbeks last year:
Charles V manages to keep it together, Philip and Mary manage to have a son who inherits it all. Catholicism marches unopposed. The Dutch are crushed, the northern German princes and under siege. Scotland and Scandinavia remain the only bastions of Protestantism.

The House of Habsburg stands triumphant over all of Europe. The New World in under their iron heel as well. Talk of a new crusade under their splendid young Emperor is everywhere, and seems to be going somewhere for once. Certainly their victories against the Turk in the Balkans are promising. The Poles speak of possibly electing the Habsburgs as Kings as well.

Austriae est imperare orbi universo

All the world is subject to Austria

The French King awakens from his nightmare, drenched in a cold sweat. He breathes heavily in his bed, his chest clenched. He gives a nervous laugh. The House of Valois is safe. None of that really happened. The House of Habsburg didn’t really manage to forge a universal monarchy in just 3 generations and surround France. And even if they had, it would all be collapsing.

It was all just a dream, a terrible terrible dream.

Right?
