Also, some names in Frnace (such as Manche, Côtes du Nord, or Ille-et-Vilaine) didn't exisuntil the revolution, they were crafted by trh revolutionaries to break up the former constituencies of France.

WIP WARS: A NEW .PNG

Found this bad boy tucked away in my files, forgotten after I moved and got a new computer. Decided to finish it up. Now it just needs a key and a description... Yeah... I'm sure that'll happen soon...ish.

Uses RCS colors to represent culture, and most of the it is caused by the POD leading to various culture migrations, invasions, and colonization. Any guesses what's going on? HINT: The behemoth of a Judaic state there in the middle is where the POD is. More than a little ASB.

Is your Über-Armenia (pink) communist in any way? Also, what system of government does mega-Cascadia/California have? Democratic?

Religion in the Americas in The Dying of the Light. [WIP]

Puritanism:
Puritanism in the 2180s is a particular brand of Revelationist [the End Times are Nigh!] Christianity that turned the once-liberal-and-irreligious New England into a deeply socially conservative [by 2180s standards...] and fundamentalist one. The fact Lovecraftian horrors regularly plague the region certainly helps...

Cult of Cthulhu: Rhode Island, before its conquest and annexation by Massachusetts, was a liberal area known for having a lot of people in green robes and a few with a fishy appearance. The Massachusetts Inquisition has seemingly crushed this cultish influence, but it still remains in some form.

Eywa: The Na'vi worship Eywa, aka Cascadia itself. Some say that this is but a mere minimalistic interpretation and that Eywa is in fact the Earth.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism): The Mormon Church has prospered alone of the "normal" religions/denominations in the Post-Apocalyptic Horror due to their strong missionary tradition and Utah being relatively untouched by the Undead. Even Brown's Zen failed to destroy them.

Mexika: The "Mexika" religion is a sort of neo-Aztec one. The Post-Apocalyptic Horror and then the Great Awakening changed Mexican society a lot. An unholy fusion of Santa Muerta and the old Aztec belief in an ephemeral world into a sort of religion where death is seen as nothing and the "unravelling" of the world is clear evidence of the incoming end. The United Nations [still around by 2181 thanks to many stubborn heads] regularly condemn the Mexican Empire for its human sacrifices.

North American Catholicism: The most scientific version of religion around, it's the most "appealing" to irreligious people turned off by the fundamentalism of Puritanism. Since the Zombie Apocalypse destroyed Rome and took most of the Conclave's lives with them, "who is the Pope?" is a contentious issue. The NA Catholics follow the one in St. Louis, always a member of a deeply scholaristic monastic order started by a later-beautified scholar who tried to save many texts from destruction.

Chicago Cult: Sharing many similarities to the Mexika religion, the Chicago Cult holds that death does not stop your responsibility to the world. The city-state of Chicago is known to burn corpses for fuel, use corpse-made compost for crops, and people keep on voting for their party after they die.

Agulha: Portuguese for "needle" as in "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God". This particular branch of Revelationist Christianity combines the belief that "we are in the End Times" with a particularly nasty brand of "communism". Brazil used to be a wealthy country until the Agulha-ist Christian Labour Party took control. Now it's an impoverished land with few capital due to the public executions of "the wealthy" [which ended up being defined as "anybody who aren't poor as hell"]. Brazil is deeply isolationist and purges itself every few years of "the wealthy".

No, that's the Canaanites in a federation with Armenians and Georgians. The *Indonesian coastal state in North America is an elective monarchy with an elected legislature, but each state has its own system; some are republics, some absolute monarchies, some technocracies, some theocracies, etc.

So a pseudo-Israel in effect?

but each state has its own system; some are republics, some absolute monarchies, some technocracies, some theocracies, etc.

Cool idea! How is this implemented in a federal constitution, or is there no such document? Also, is at least one state communist? And is this "poly-ideological" system an ideology in itself?

Could I use this system of government somewhere, e.g. in a map game?

That's A 1908 map isn't it. I know because for some dumb reason I once tried to make a QBAM 1908 map, and so I went looking for base maps. Long story short that map's riddled with minor border problems (mostly in Africa, but there are a few elsewhere - just look at southern Arabia). Still a good map though, and the flags seem to be correct.

Oh, I know, but thought it'd be fun to post, especially as FiveThirtyEight now gives the Cubs a leading chance to win the World Series.

Made an error; it's Canaanites, Georgians, and Kurds in a federation! And yes. That big blue state is Judea, land of the Hebrews and the Egyptians, in a TL where Moses becomes pharaoh. A LOT of people get pushed out. The North Africans and Berbers get driven West after initially being integrated, and the Canaanites go north. The Greeks and Macedons driven into Europe. Look up the RCS 2 color scheme; I use those colors for representation of approximate cultures.

Their constitution only has the federal government outlined, and states are free to use whatever government they deem best for them. It stems from them being many tribes and groups with various beliefs in how to govern. They are, however, capitalist, though some are communes in themselves, but communism as an ideology hasn't really spread. Their ideology is essentially one of "different, but united," and every state sends their own regiments to the national army, with non-natives defending states, so no one tries to break away. They have a Bill of Rights too, but they have a very clear incorporation doctrine, and only a handful of rights go to the states too, the rest left up to state constitution.

Hemel Hempstead is 400~ years too early.
It looks very nice, but the main issue that jumps out is that's it's clear you've used a modern map as the base- there's a lot of cities which didn't even exist at that point (Brighton and Bournemouth for example.
I understand that anachronisms ruin the map quite a bit. You can ascribe it to an unreliable cartographer making a map in the 19th century and not putting much stock into certain details.

Just another random map based on a WI I saw in the 1900+ forum asking what a world where Germany was democratic, Russia was fascist and the USA was communist might look like. I decided to throw the FBU in there, just coz. Not mean't to be hugely plausible.

CHURCHILL'S TRIUMPH

The POD is that the Gallipoli campaign is managed differently and is more successful. The Dardanelles are forced by the British who capture Constantinople and open up the Black Sea to resupply, keeping Russia afloat. The Entente manages to coerce Bulgaria and Romania into co-operating (read not killing) one another and get Greece to formally open a second front against Austria-Hungary. The resulting pressure is to much for Austria-Hungary who collapse in mid 1916; Germany, seeing the writing on the wall sue for peace. While the war is still bloody it is much shorter and the peace terms enforced by the Entente are less harsh for Germany.

The Ottoman Empire is evicerated however by France, Britain and Russia who enforce a version of the Sykes-Picot agreement, carving Anatolia up between the victorious states. However contention rises over Constantinople which the Russians demand as their "birthright". Britain and France are not eager to have Russia in the Mediterranean and relations sour immensely. This also leads to a "stab-in-the-back" myth settling in Russia which begins to swing to the far right in the ensuing decade. Without the civil war, Russia is in a much stronger position and begins rapid industrialization, causing alarm bells in London, Berlin and Paris. Japan meanwhile, like Russia, feels mistreated at the peace tables and the two put aside previous differences and enter into an accord in the 1924 following the expiration of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance.

While Germany lost it's colonial Empire, reparations were less harsh and Germany is allowed to maintain a constitutional Monarchy. Despite all the odds, German democracy manages to negotiate the post-war years relatively well, however fears of Russian revanchism (common rhetoric from St. Petersburg) lead to violations of the arms limits enforced by the Entente. However Britain and France were lax about this due to fears about the Bear that had awoken. London and Paris begin fusing key elements of government, military and their economy to compete with the Russian giant and the sudden invasion of Finland (and the Second American Civil War) in the 1930's cemented this relationship into a full blown Union.

Across the Atlantic things rapidly diverge and without the Russian revolution Socialism is a more commonly accepted ideology across the world. While America remained out of the war, the ensuing depression hit the country hard. Socialism in the United States became more attractive as attempts by numerous Presidents to deal with the crisis ended in failure. Protests and political radicalization became common, with the populace seeing no end in sight to the calamity. The 1937 election was a contentious one, as fiery and charismatic candidates from the left and right began attracting more of the vote, promising radical reforms to save the country. Cities across America had become sites of turmoil and chaos, as supporters of both sides clashed in the streets. In Washington the Socialist protestors marched on the Capitol building, only to be driven off three times by soldiers under the command General MacArthur. As the political climate in America grew more toxic, President Hoover made the controversial decision to suspend the elections triggering the beginning of Second American Civil War.

For two years the fighting raged and the world watched on with shock and horror as the nation tore itself apart. Ultimately the highly popular Socialists triumphed, driving American "reactionaries" into the sea and chasing them into Mexico. MacArthur fled in disgrace to Hawaii, declaring himself interim President. The civil war ended in 1939 and The United Socialist States of America was declared that same year. The USSA immediately began spreading it's influence into Latin America, triggering the creation of the Franco-British Union that year. The USSA however is nothing like the USSR from our timeline, embracing democracy and socialism together (imagine the US from Reds!).

The year is now 1942 and sadly things look to go sour as the Russians renew their demands for Constantinople. Germany and the FBU grimly begin to prepare for what seems an inevitable confrontation with the Eurasian Union and Japan, as forces millions strong amass in Poland and in Trebizond. The USSA is the wildcard here, while there are tensions between it and the FBU, the Japanese remain a threat to the Pacific and Hawaii (USSA territory as far as Washington is concerned) and the Russians are more than vocal in their hateful rhetoric towards the new American regime. There is also their ideological allies in Spain who will also likely bear the brunt of Russian aggression. Meanwhile universities in Canada and laboratories deep in the outback of Australia, work quietly to perfect a weapon that may prove pivotal in the war to come.

This is a map of Europe in Ill Bethisad using the TACOS color scheme. The basemap is from Wikipedia. Mostly I just wanted to see how the TACOS transferred over to IB. If there is another thread specifically for that kind of map, let me know.

Most countries on the map use the expected color corresponding to OTL countries. Some explanations:

  • Kemr (Wales + western England): The "Roman Britain" color. That was an easy one, I imagine that Kemr is part of the reason that the color exists.
  • Armorica (the Channel Islands): I used the "Celtic successor" state, since they are Celts
  • Maghreb: "Morocco-based Caliphate" color, since it is a Morocco-based caliphate
  • Jervaine (based in Alsace and jointly sovereign over 2 neighboring regions): I used the "Latinized Germans" color rather than the "Alsace" color because it better reflects the country's origin as a pocket of late Roman provincial society that persisted into the medieval era.
  • Veneda and Slevania: I used the colors for Poland and Slovakia, even though they are theoretically different nations. Both countries speak Romance languages, but in terms of history they fill niches almost identical to their OTL Slavic counterparts, right down to specific historic individuals.
  • Danzig: The "Prussia" color to reflect the main ethnic makeup of the city
  • Nassland: The "Karelia" color, even though the Nassians are a Slavic people
  • Dalmatia: The "other ethnic Italian/Adriatic state" color. The Dalmatians are not Italians, but they are Romance speakers on the Adriatic.
  • Sanjak: The "Bosnia" color. Sanjak was created for the people who are called Bosniaks in OTL, Muslim speakers of Serbocroatian. In IB, most of Bosnia is part of Dalmatia, so they're not called that; but they are more or less the same people.
  • Cyprus and Malta: English Dominion color
  • Judea: The "Israel" color as they are a Jewish people in the Levant; but in IB Judea has been a Jewish state on and off for centuries.
  • Bedouin Free State: I used the color for "other (democratic) Arabs". The BFS is not democratic, but it is so decentralized that it doesn't even have a head of state.
  • Hijaaz: The "Hashemite" color
  • Saudi Arabia: The "united Arabia" color, only to show that it is the same as OTL Saudi Arabia, even though it does not include Hijaaz
There are five countries that I couldn't place on the color scheme. I suppose that makes them the strangest countries of Ill Bethisad. Three are basically jokes, and two are countries built around unusual conlangs.
  • Hay-on-Wye: It's a tiny kingdom in the middle of Kemr, based on the Welsh micronation in OTL
  • Saugeais: another micronation that makes an appearance, a tiny republic in Franche-Comté
  • Grand Fenwick: Lifted from The Mouse That Roared; a rogue English-speaking state in the Alps between France and Helvetia
  • Skuodia: A Slavic principality on the Baltic between Latvia and Lithuania
  • Xliponia: A Romance-speaking kingdom in Epirus

Good show, sir. :)

Communist America, Red Ottomans and other bad ideas clumped together. I hope I wasn't too plagiarize-y.

Summarized, Germany, NL, China, Thailand, Congo, and their allies are democratic. France, UK, Spain, Portugal, South Italy, Argentina, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and their allies are ranging from right-wing to Hitlerian. The USSR, UASR and OSR and their multitude of minions are communists of varying ilks. Despite their ideological brotherhood there is still tension between Washington and Moscow, and Istanbul tries to side with the bigger knife.
