Just another random map based on a WI I saw in the 1900+ forum asking what a world where Germany was democratic, Russia was fascist and the USA was communist might look like. I decided to throw the FBU in there, just coz. Not mean't to be hugely plausible.
CHURCHILL'S TRIUMPH
The POD is that the Gallipoli campaign is managed differently and is more successful. The Dardanelles are forced by the British who capture Constantinople and open up the Black Sea to resupply, keeping Russia afloat. The Entente manages to coerce Bulgaria and Romania into co-operating (read not killing) one another and get Greece to formally open a second front against Austria-Hungary. The resulting pressure is to much for Austria-Hungary who collapse in mid 1916; Germany, seeing the writing on the wall sue for peace. While the war is still bloody it is much shorter and the peace terms enforced by the Entente are less harsh for Germany.
The Ottoman Empire is evicerated however by France, Britain and Russia who enforce a version of the Sykes-Picot agreement, carving Anatolia up between the victorious states. However contention rises over Constantinople which the Russians demand as their "birthright". Britain and France are not eager to have Russia in the Mediterranean and relations sour immensely. This also leads to a "stab-in-the-back" myth settling in Russia which begins to swing to the far right in the ensuing decade. Without the civil war, Russia is in a much stronger position and begins rapid industrialization, causing alarm bells in London, Berlin and Paris. Japan meanwhile, like Russia, feels mistreated at the peace tables and the two put aside previous differences and enter into an accord in the 1924 following the expiration of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance.
While Germany lost it's colonial Empire, reparations were less harsh and Germany is allowed to maintain a constitutional Monarchy. Despite all the odds, German democracy manages to negotiate the post-war years relatively well, however fears of Russian revanchism (common rhetoric from St. Petersburg) lead to violations of the arms limits enforced by the Entente. However Britain and France were lax about this due to fears about the Bear that had awoken. London and Paris begin fusing key elements of government, military and their economy to compete with the Russian giant and the sudden invasion of Finland (and the Second American Civil War) in the 1930's cemented this relationship into a full blown Union.
Across the Atlantic things rapidly diverge and without the Russian revolution Socialism is a more commonly accepted ideology across the world. While America remained out of the war, the ensuing depression hit the country hard. Socialism in the United States became more attractive as attempts by numerous Presidents to deal with the crisis ended in failure. Protests and political radicalization became common, with the populace seeing no end in sight to the calamity. The 1937 election was a contentious one, as fiery and charismatic candidates from the left and right began attracting more of the vote, promising radical reforms to save the country. Cities across America had become sites of turmoil and chaos, as supporters of both sides clashed in the streets. In Washington the Socialist protestors marched on the Capitol building, only to be driven off three times by soldiers under the command General MacArthur. As the political climate in America grew more toxic, President Hoover made the controversial decision to suspend the elections triggering the beginning of Second American Civil War.
For two years the fighting raged and the world watched on with shock and horror as the nation tore itself apart. Ultimately the highly popular Socialists triumphed, driving American "reactionaries" into the sea and chasing them into Mexico. MacArthur fled in disgrace to Hawaii, declaring himself interim President. The civil war ended in 1939 and The United Socialist States of America was declared that same year. The USSA immediately began spreading it's influence into Latin America, triggering the creation of the Franco-British Union that year. The USSA however is nothing like the USSR from our timeline, embracing democracy and socialism together (imagine the US from Reds!).
The year is now 1942 and sadly things look to go sour as the Russians renew their demands for Constantinople. Germany and the FBU grimly begin to prepare for what seems an inevitable confrontation with the Eurasian Union and Japan, as forces millions strong amass in Poland and in Trebizond. The USSA is the wildcard here, while there are tensions between it and the FBU, the Japanese remain a threat to the Pacific and Hawaii (USSA territory as far as Washington is concerned) and the Russians are more than vocal in their hateful rhetoric towards the new American regime. There is also their ideological allies in Spain who will also likely bear the brunt of Russian aggression. Meanwhile universities in Canada and laboratories deep in the outback of Australia, work quietly to perfect a weapon that may prove pivotal in the war to come.
