Blue Blur Speeds by Nintendo: Sonic Team Joins Nintendo

Chapter 25: Nintendo Enters the BattleField - July - September - Year 2002
As time marched on so did Nintendo's deal with Electronic Arts become finalized. Electronic Arts would ensure that publishing rights to the Battlefield franchise would stay Nintendo's alone. Nintendo would also not try to buy back Rare if they wanted to keep the publishing rights to Battlefield. With this deal Nintendo knew it would have huge success in western markets with gamers.

Battlefield 1942 would be an online first person shooter made by Digital Illusions CE and published by Nintendo in the year 2002. There exists five infantry types that players could pick from:
  1. Scout - has long range surveillance and help artillery spot targets but is not fit for close quarters combat.
  2. Assault - is the standard role and provides aggressive firepower to help units push the objective.
  3. Anti-tank - best against vehicles but weapons are not accurate against other infantry.
  4. Medic - able to heal himself and others but weapons have less stopping power than the assault.
  5. Engineer - can repair vehicles and place explosives against infantry and vehicles alike but is not as powerful as the Assault.
Players would be able to choose between the Axis and Allies as sides to fight on. The countries available would be dependent on which battle was taking place.

Nintendo would show off gameplay of BattleField 1942 to the gaming press and gamers alike in the 2002 E3 expo.

"Hey boys check out this game that Nintendo just released." Said Dad

"Looks very fun, but I doubt Mom would let us play it." Said Jamison

"Yeah. She probably would hate it." Said Gerald.

"That is fine, your old man is going to be playing this game for a long time. Maybe I should make an account on your console?" Said Dad.

"What are you going to name it?" Said the boys in Unison.

"How about Commander1974?, I will pick a fitting Icon to show how old school I am in the ways of video gaming." Said Dad

"Even dad plays video games, go figure." Said Jamison.

"Yeah it is funny how the NetDrive will get some use out of him." Said Gerald.

Chapter 26: Finalizing the Deal - October - December - Year 2002
Georgia United States
"Hey Boys check out the TV. Nintendo is making a new announcement." Dad said

Jamison and Gerald: Show us father.

In a move that sent shockwaves through the gaming industry, Nintendo has officially announced the acquisition of Enix, a well-respected game development company, in the later year of 2002. This strategic move has been in the works for some time, with both companies seeing the potential for collaboration and growth in the ever-evolving gaming market. Enix, known for their critically acclaimed role-playing games and beloved franchises such as Dragon Quest, brings a wealth of experience and talent to Nintendo's already impressive portfolio. The acquisition is seen as a significant milestone for both companies, as it opens up new opportunities for creative collaboration and the development of groundbreaking titles for Nintendo's platforms.

Dad: Wow Nintendo finally made a purchase.
Jamison: But it wasn't Rare.
Gerald: The reporter has more to say on the screen.

Fans of both Nintendo and Enix can look forward to exciting new projects and collaborations in the future. With Enix's expertise in creating immersive and engaging RPGs, the possibilities for innovative gameplay experiences are endless. Nintendo's global reach and marketing prowess, combined with Enix's track record of delivering top-quality games, make for a compelling partnership that is sure to delight gamers worldwide.

Boys in Unison: So what does this mean?
Dad: It means that Nintendo has bigger plans to delve into the RPG genre and will manage the Dragon Quest games. Nintendo might make a Sonic RPG in the future.
Gerald: That sounds awesome.
Jamison: Meh. If the games are good.
Dad: Now boys that important game you are looking forward to comes out next year.
Boys in Unison: You mean the full Melee version of the game?
Dad: Yes, I will get it when it releases the beginning of next year.
*The boys hug their father together* Thanks dad!
Dad: Now boys I don't want it interfering with your schoolwork so hop to it.

Nintendo Headquarters
Random Employee: Sir the deal is done with Enix.
Satoru Iwata: Good. We can have them make Role Playing Games for us and push the NetDrive to new heights in the gaming sphere. Dragon Quest will help us tremendously.
Random Employee: Yes Sir.
Satoru Iwata: Plus their workings with the game developer Level-5 could prove useful to us.

Chapter 27: Online Gaming - January - May - Year 2003
In the early year of 2001 Sonic Team was approached by Sega to make a new game for the Phantasy Star series. The game was to take place on a hostile alien planet where players would be able to interact with objects and enemies to try to colonize it. Nintendo's NetDrive would have the necessary components to run the game with its internal hard drive.

Phantasy Star Online for the Nintendo NetDrive was a game-changer for online gaming at the time. With its built-in hard drive storage, players no longer had to rely on memory cards or external storage devices to save their progress. This made it much more convenient for players to dive into the expansive world of Phantasy Star Online and continue their adventures without any interruptions. The game itself was a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that allowed players to create their own characters and embark on quests to defeat enemies and explore the vast universe of the game. Nintendo NetDrive's version of Phantasy Star Online featured improved graphics and gameplay mechanics compared to its Dreamcast predecessor, making it even more immersive and engaging for players.

One of the standout features of Phantasy Star Online for the Nintendo NetDrive was its online multiplayer mode, which allowed players to team up with friends or strangers from around the world to tackle challenging dungeons and bosses together. This added a new level of social interaction and collaboration to the game, making it even more addictive and entertaining for players.

Phantasy Star Online also had unique Chaos that could only be gotten in the game through connectivity and would give players better reasons to revisit titles like Sonic Adventure.

Nintendo had shown the gameplay of multiplayer to the public with its four player mode for those who did not want to play online.

Nintendo would also release a device for the NetDrive

GameCube Keyboard.jpg

It was the NetDrive Keyboard and it would come with copies of Phantasy Star Online and would sell for $45.

Phantasy Star Online would do well for Nintendo and would further strengthen Nintendo and Sega's relationship in the gaming market. Sega would keep close tabs on bringing more titles to Nintendo's NetDrive and Nintendo would allow Sonic Team to work with Sega to work on other projects.

Boys in Unison: Dad can we get this game?
Dad: What is it?
Jamison: It says the game is Phantasy Star Online, it is made by a collaborative effort between Nintendo and Sega.
Gerald: It also has an offline mode for multiple players to play together.
Jamison: Yeah and there exists multiple classes such as Hunter that focuses on Melee, Ranger that focuses on Ranged attacks.
Gerald: And Force that uses magic and supportive spells!
Dad: Are you sure you want this game over Melee?
Boys in Unison: No....we just hoped we would be able to get more games for the console. We would be working together like how mom wants us to.
Dad: Well I am not made of money.
Boys in Unison: Yes sir.
Dad: Besides, you two might want to wait until the year is over to decide what games you fully want. You two will be allowed one game each for Christmas.
Boys in Unison: Okay we will wait.

Chapter 28: Nintendo's MMO Service - June - August - Year 2003
Phantasy Star Online was a hit for Nintendo and Sega in the online scheme of video games. Selling a total of about 3 million units in its life time and 745,000 in the first few months had Nintendo foaming at the mouth for possibilities of having another Online game for the NetDrive. This time Nintendo figured the game could and should host Massive Multiplayer Online services. One such game was Ragnarok Online with game developer Gravity.
Ragnarok Online Login.png

For $75.00 US Dollars players would get the option to create an account for Ragnarok Online and the NetDrive Keyboard controller for players to use enhancing the gaming experience. The game would have free online services and no subscription fees after players would install the game which was a total of about 2 Gigabytes.

Ragnarok Online Character Creation.png

After creating an account players would be able to make their own character with customization options. As shown above players could choose between male and female avatars to choose from. Shown below are the jobs that "Novices", players who just started the game, could be. The jobs available to Novice are:
  • Swordsman - Attacker specializing in up close and personal combat.
  • Magician - Magical Attacker that uses range and debuffs to take on enemies.
  • Merchant - Capable of using money to attack opponents and getting discount at stores while opening stores of their own.
  • Acolyte - Holy warriors who are able to heal and buff other players including themselves using magic.
  • Thief - Sneaky attackers that use Agility and Dexterity to take on opponents and to steal rare items.
  • Archer - Ranged attackers that use bow and arrows to defeat their opponents.
In Ragnarok online players would level their Base Level, Level which included stats, and their Job Level, and their level of skills that is in a certain class. Below are the stats that players would increase as they leveled their class and job.
Ragnarok Online Character Stats.png

There are six basic stats which will affect a large number of aspects of a character's combat worthiness against given opponents. These stats can be directly altered by the player either at character creation or when gaining a base level.

  • Strength: Increases attack strength in melee combat and weight limit.
  • Agility: Increases attack speed and dodge rate.
  • Vitality: Increases physical defense, maximum HP and HP recovery rate.
  • Intelligence: Increases magic attack, magic defense and maximum SP.
  • Dexterity: Increases accuracy, ranged attack strength and minimum damage dealt, and lowers the cast time for some skills and spells.
  • Luck: Increases Critical hits and perfect dodge rate.
As players increased in job level, 40 or higher, they would be able to choose their next tier of classes.
Ragnarok Online Character Classes.png

Alongside being able to choose from the core classes, Novices would be able to choose Super Novices. Super Novices are a jack of all trades master of none when it comes to the first round of character classes such as Swordsmen, Magician, Merchant, Thief, Archer and Acolyte. Super Novices would not be able to turn into another class unlike the other options. Some class choices would be entirely different such as the Acolyte's more healing and buffing based class the Priest/Priestess and the physically based Monk. Archer's whom leveled up enough would be capable of turning into Bards (Male), or Dancers (Female) which both are capable of setting up Area of Effect spells that buffs party members through song and dance. The Swordsmen would be able to choose between major attacker Knight or tank Crusader. The biggest difference between class choices would be what the Merchant had available as Blacksmith would buff party member's weapons, armor and equipment and Alchemist would be capable of creating potions that gives buffs and creating a helper that would change the tide of battle but would need to be feed like a regular pet. Magician's are able to choose between Powerful magic casters like Wizards or Anti-Magic casters like the Sage. Thieves are capable of becoming high dodging attackers called Assassins or Rogues which steal the enemies moves.

After a certain class reaches Base Level 99 and Job Level 50 may they transcend into a tougher version of their chosen class; however, they must level up from level 1 all over again from Novice. Classes are not stuck in the classes they choose to transcend into. Priests can become Knights in their transcended state; however, there is no mixture of abilities among classes.

All in all these character classes would prove to be popular amongst the fanbase and servers would be lagged down with a total of 2 million players the first couple of months. Nintendo knew it had a big hit on its hands and would continue its partnership with South Korean Game Developer Gravity.

Jamison: Wow look at this game dad!
Dad: What happened to that Phantasy Star Online game you two both could play together?
Gerald: Well it does seem to have deeper game materials to make it more interesting.
Dad: Yes, but can you two play together?
Boys in Unison: No we would need our own NetDrives to do so.
Dad: *sigh* Well you are not getting the game.
Jamison: Fine.
Gerald: I hope Melee comes out soon.

Chapter 29: A Melee To Behold - September - December - Year 2003

Boys in Unison: Its Christmas!
Dad: Come on, open your last gift.

Sonic Team Joins Nintendo Melee Timeline.png

Red icons are unlockable characters and Blue are starting characters.
Gerald: Look it is Shadow the Hedgehog alongside Sonic. But who is Snake?
Dad: Oh they added Snake from Metal Gear Solid? Sounds intriguing. Here let me play.
Boys in Unison: But dad you don't have a controller.
Dad: That is why I got an extra controller to play with you boys.
Boys in Unison: Get ready to lose.

Released in November 13th of 2003, Super Smash Brothers Melee was making huge splashes in the world of gaming. It wasn't long before players were able to find out why characters were added to the game and how they functioned.
Wario - Was a fan favorite request that played how you would imagine a character from Wario Land to play.
Diddy Kong - Was a fan favorite request whom played a little differently than his Brawl counter part and instead used a head butting attack for his Down B special move like that in Donkey Kong 64.
Pit - Pit is added as his own character to help flesh out the roster and to represent retro characters.
Ridley - After seeing the initial fan fare after seeing Ridley in the Melee intro movie, Sakurai decides to add him as a character.
Wolf - Wolf used his upcoming Star Fox Assault costume to pay homage to the game and show off his combat capabilties.
Charizard - Charizard is a fan favorite Pokemon and uses OTL Smash 4 moves for his moveset.
King Dedede - was added to flesh out the roster for Melee and to help give the Kirby franchise more exposure.
Snake - Added as as request from Hideo Kojima for Sakurai. Uses the same moveset from OTL's Brawl.
Shadow - Shadow would use his voice actor from Sonic Adventure 2 and use moves similar to Mewtwo's teleport. Shadow's movest is based on his Sonic Battle moveset.
Ganondorf - Having no Captain Falcon to mimic his moveset off of, his moveset is entirely original.
Solo - Dragon Quest's popularity continues to rise and Nintendo needed to flesh out the roster. UP B is the Zoom spell and leaves Kaswoosh as a Down B move. Is one of the only characters whose entire special moves are chargeable. The Zoom spell helps Solo recover to the stage instantly, but he becomes a sitting duck after using the move.

Here is how Shadow's moveset would work in Melee.
video credit to Fireisgod

Mentioning Ganondorf's Moveset would entirely be original here it is in action:
