Blue Blur Speeds by Nintendo: Sonic Team Joins Nintendo

Chapter 14: Big Happenings - January - March Year 1998
Final Fantasy was such a big deal for the Nintendo CDI regarding bringing the console into the limelight. The game made game reviewers take video game story telling seriously and put the Nintendo CDI to the forefront of that popularity. Square had stated earlier that they wanted a console with CD-ROM formats for their upcoming game and saw what Nintendo was working on. They had been intrigued and wanted to make games for the console; however, there was one company that did not like the relationship of Nintendo and Square.

Enter Sony. For about two years they were sailing easy on the success of their 3D titles and Resident Evil. Sony was hoping to take huge market shares from Nintendo before their latest console arrived and was sure they had the latest technology to fight back against the Big N. They did not expect the Disc based console made by Nintendo and their partner Phillips. Surely the momentum of Final Fantasy 7 would have died down. Take it a couple more months the game had been out and the hype surrounding Final Fantasy 7 did not slow down one bit and sales continued to bolster Nintendo's console.

That is when Sony thought of a good idea to fight the upcoming surge of the Nintendo CDI: Take Square from Nintendo.

Sure the damage had already been done with Final Fantasy 7 but any upcoming titles that were huge hits would go straight to Sony. That is when Sony made a huge announcement at Spaceworld 1998.

"We are purchasing majority stake in the game developer Square and turn it into a subsidiary of the Sony Computer Interactive Entertainment brand."

The news shook Nintendo to its core. Their commitment to disc based formats had finally paid off and now their competitor was taking one of their treasured associates. As badly that Yamauchi wanted to fight this he knew that company resources went to the Nintendo CDI and that Nintendo could not match the deep resources that Sony had. Sure the relationship between Nintendo and Square would get sullied but there were two things Nintendo could do to prepare for the future.

1) Improve the technology of their upcoming console for the next generation.
2) Find a popular RPG studio that could take on the likes of Square.

Nintendo would first get to work on the development of their next console. It would do something not thought possible in the video game market at the time. Nintendo would need to research the technology that was so new but it would be worth it to get back at Sony. Sonic Team's engineers had discussed this technology during their lunch breaks at work and Yamauchi decided now was the time to pursue the technology. After Sonic Team would finish their newest entry in the Sonic franchise they would be put up with Nintendo's Research and Development to work on this new console. It would use dial-up connections and the upcoming broadband connections for the console.

As for the RPG developer Yamauchi had just the company in mind and decided to send a representative to the company to negotiate business dealings. It would take some time but Nintendo had believed they would be able to take on the likes of Sony in the gaming market and finally take them out.

Chapter 15: Fishing for a RPG Studio - May - December - Year 1998
Resident Evil 2 had just hit the market. It starred Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield's sister Claire Redfield as they made their way through the zombie infested city of Raccoon City. The game was initially going to release only for the PlayStation but the most popular form of the game was on the Nintendo CDI with its better load times and running speed for the game. The game would sell a total of 4.96 million copies.

Another game that came out featured a certain Peter Pan dressed Hylian named Link. Ocarina of Time was finally able to host the interactive components that Shigeru Miyamoto wanted thanks to the Nintendo CDI's memory cache. The game remembered what trees gamers planted, cut down, and foot prints left in the sand. Despite this, Ocarina of Time also hosted two new dungeons not featured in OTL. The Wind Temple where the players would get the hover boots and rescue another sage from an evil Wind Ghost spirit. The Ice Temple where the player would get the iron boots and fight an ice demon to save the sage and recover the medallions. Ocarina of Time was a major success and moved 7.6 million units of the console and the game itself.

Rare's Bird and Bear finally made their debut on the Nintendo CDI in the form of Banjo-Kazooie. This game was about saving Banjo's younger sister Tootie from the evil witch Gruntilda whom wished to take her beauty for herself. The game would fare well amongst critics and gamers alike as the game would sell 3.5 million units.

Surprisingly, Konami released Metal Gear Solid not as a multi platform title but to only the Nintendo CDI thanks to its robust memory and disc speed. Main character Solid Snake would focus on battling the titular Metal Gears from evil armies. The game would sell 6 million consoles on the Nintendo CDI and put the Nintendo CDI about 10 million consoles sold over the competition.

There were two more titles for the two systems provided by Capcom for the year. One was a certain title called Street Fighter Alpha 3:

It boasted fast loading times and fast gameplay almost to arcade perfection. Another title was Capcom's Marvel Vs Capcom where Marvel's Super Heroes would fight Capcom's Titular characters like Megaman and Ryu. Both games would sell a total of 1.5 million for Street Fighter Alpha 3 and 2.4 million for Marvel vs Capcom.

Yamauchi was grinning ear to ear to see the sales of his console doing so well. Much better than the PlayStation with about 12 million more console sales totaling a number of 42 million Nintendo CDI sold. With these big numbers the Big N thought of making an expansion pack for better and smoother textures for the console. The slot on the top of the console would be used and the Nintendo CDI expansion slot would be used. As plans for Nights into Dreams were being worked on Yamauchi interrupted the development of said game where Shigeru Miyamoto and Yuji Naka were working on and decided to move them to the other team to work on Sonic's latest title for the Nintendo CDI. Night's adventure would have to wait.

As for the RPG developer that Nintendo wanted it would take some time but they were hoping to put Enix into their foray of developers. The head of Enix itself was not against this idea but stated that the finalization of the deal would be completed by the year 2000. Nintendo would be happy to know that all properties and games owned by Enix would be theirs and the game development rights of Dragon Quest would finally find a good home in the house of the big N.

Oh this.. it's beautiful

Chapter 16: A Smashing of Brothers - January - April 1999
Resident Evil 3 Nemesis had just released to stores everywhere in the video game market. The game centered around a certain Jill Valentine from the first game who was trapped in Racoon City and needed to escape before a big nuke was dropped on the city. The game released for both the Nintendo CDI and PlayStation with most sales coming from the Nintendo CDI. Total sales was 3.5 million copies.

Silent Hill was another title released by Konami for the Nintendo CDI to test the popularity of the upcoming franchise and popular it was. The game had no trouble finding a huge audience and was praised for its graphics and innovation in enemy design for players to tackle on. The fog effect still remained which made the game eerie to some and helped set the atmosphere for the game. Silent Hill would sell a total of 2.25 Million copies.

Final Fantasy VIII was another game that came out to stunning applause. Not as much as the one for Final Fantasy VII but praise was there non the less. The game sold a total of 8.15 million copies worldwide making it one of the best selling titles on the platform and helped Sony catch up to Nintendo's CDI which now only was about 9 million consoles ahead.

Not wanting to play second fiddle anymore Sony decided another studio buy out was needed. They set their eyes on Vivendi games, owners of the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro games, as their next prize. Sony paid forward 120 million dollars to purchase the studio that hosted the rights to Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon so there would be no chances of the game to come to Nintendo's platform.

Nintendo could not do much about this acquisition as they were in first place in the console business and already had their own acquisition taking place with Enix. Still, Satoru Iwata of Hal Laboratory fame and Masahiro Sakurai established a new game called Super Smash Brothers. The game would include Nintendo's mascots and characters duking it out to see who would be the best.

Here is the roster released for the game:

For those wondering, here is how Sonic played:

Note: Captain Falcon does not exist in this timeline due to Sonic taking his place as Nintendo's fast speedster character.

Sonic's standard stage would be like the one used in Brawl and use the Green Hill Zone theme to boot.

Super Smash Brothers would help Nintendo get another leap above Sony in the console business bringing their total sales to 52 million consoles sold with Smash Brothers selling a total of 6 million with the inclusion of Sonic.

Not wanting this momentum to slow down at all, Yamauchi insisted that Sonic Team finish Sonic Adventure by the Holiday and to bring Sonic the Hedgehog into the limelight again. Nintendo would also contact Sega to help them develop an arcade like engine for their next upcoming console project "Dolphin".

Chapter 17: Adventures of Sonic Proportions May - December Year 1999
The time for Sonic's big time in 3D had finally come. Shigeru Miyamoto had helped Yuji Naka and Sonic Team with the Nintendo CDI game development and learned some things would need to be cut. IOTL Sonic Adventure was 1.2 Gigabytes large but ITTL it only has 700 Megabytes to work with. Thus some concessions had to be made.

For starters there is no Big the Cat or Miles "Tails" Prower Levels. Nintendo was not advertising Sega Bass Fishing and the Tails gameplay could have easily been reduced to a player two gameplay of sorts. There is no cutscenes in the game besides the famous "You're going to crash" and the Eggman cutscenes. Amy Rose's portion is cut off and given only one long level to play through.

Sonic the Hedgehog 64 render.png

Instead of the game taking place in Station Square the game takes place in a Sonic esq world called "Jamboiant Zone" where only Sonic, Knuckles, Amy Rose and E-102 Gamma are playable. The Chao exists in the same capacity with little to no changes with the extra eggs missing but showing up in the sequel.

The story for Sonic, Knuckles, Amy Rose and E-102 Gamma still exists in the same way it originally did; however, there is no mention of Big The Cat. Graphics are of course a little less advanced than OTL with the Dreamcast.

Sonic Adventure was a success amongst Sonic fans and Nintendo fans alike. The
game sold a total of 10 million copies.

Sorry for the short chapter. Next time we learn about Nintendo’s plans in making their next console “Project Dolphin”. Including an additional project called “Project Waves”.

Chapter 18: The Dog Bites Back January - March - Year 2000
Sony wanted an edge over the Nintendo CDI. Of course, purchasing the rights to Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon proved hastily. Sony wanted a franchise that could compete with Nintendo’s Mario and Sonic and Crash Bandicoot seemed to hold the answer; however, game developer Naughty Dog wasn’t too keen continuing work for the series.

“What do you mean you are done with the series?” Sony executive.

“I mean we are moving on from Crash Bandicoot and are not looking back. We at Naughty Dog always look forward.”
“But Sony wants you to continue the franchise. Crash Bandicoot and Spyro could be big hits amongst gaming but you are not putting forth the effort.”

“Like I said, we are done with the bandicoot franchise and are moving forward to try new things. Don’t try to threaten our sovereignty.”

What didn’t help matters was that Sony botched the release of Crash Team Racing earlier last year and offered little to no advertising. This angered higher ups at Naughty Dog as to why create the game if Sony was not going to advertise it. With that the deal was done and Naughty Dog would part ways with Sony. Any other partnership would prove fruitful than with Sony. Maybe Microsoft could use the help?

As for Nintendo’s Project Waves, it centered around using internet connectivity to play video games. Talks from the employees at Sonic Team had become a reality and Nintendo used this to test their upcoming games. Most games like the sequel to Dead or Alive, the upcoming sequel to Super Smash Brothers CDI used the connectivity in some capacity. As for now the full blown details would be kept secret until later the same year.

Reminds me of the Saturn's cartridge slot. Mostly used for a memory cartridge or Gameshark
IIRC that was for a powerbase equivalent of Saturn, others said was for the modem(correct) and the memory cartridge(both for save games and the ROM/RAM Cartidge for some special games to work), others to be an general expansion slot(also correct)

I had the Saturn as a kid and had the Gameshark and the memory cart. 11 year old me wasn't too bright, me and my brother were huge Sega fanboys and managed to get the 32X for our birthday in June and the Saturn for Christmas

Chapter 19: PlayStation 2 and Nintendo's Expansion - April - June Year 2000
Sony and Naughty Dog were in bit of a tough spot together. Sony had recently botched the selling and commercial advertisement of Crash Bandicoot 3 and Crash Team Racing; however, that is not what irked Naughty Dog the most about their relationship. No, what irked Naughty Dog was Sony's insistent campaign to keep Crash Bandicoot as a project for Naughty Dog to take care of. Naughty Dog was having none of it and would soon be leaving Sony's care for greener pastures after the release of Jak and Daxter.

As for Sony, things were not looking up at the moment. Nintendo's CDI had just released an add-on called the Expansion Pack that could help games be played with better graphics and attunements to games. Nonetheless, Sony would make sure their latest console the PlayStation 2 would get the edge over Nintendo's upcoming system. The PlayStation 2 would use DVD discs and double as a DVD player for the added benefit of being two devices in one. Sony was hoping that Nintendo's newest upcoming console would not be ready in time to make an impact. What would Nintendo add to their latest console anyways? Insiders knew that the upcoming "Dolphin" would not use DVDs and thus there was nothing to worry about in terms of stealing Sony's idea of making a console with DVD capabilities.

Speaking of Nintendo they were investing in a new up starting company made of former Iguana staff called 'Retro Studios'. Jeff Spangenburg heard that Nintendo was looking forward to more western made games to be established on their newest system and got a heavy investment from it. Retro Studios would be a huge get for Nintendo in the western gaming sphere and would bring more players into the Big N's arms; however, there existed more game developers that Nintendo would bring aboard.

Tecmo, the developers of Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden, would be shown the upcoming online capabilities of Nintendo's 'Dolphin' and be astounded. Online gaming could take their franchises to the next level. The next company was Electronic Arts whose sports games would help tremendously attract the sports enthusiasts among gamers. Electronic Arts was looking forward to making online games that captured audiences and would revolutionize video games. Another company was Midway Games which would give Nintendo exclusivity for two titles for the "Dolphin". Lastly, there was another game company that was preparing to make strides in the South Korean video game market. Nintendo would enlist game developer "Gravity" to make an online video game for their upcoming console exclusively.

Nintendo may not have been making their next console DVD player capable but it surely would prove to be popular in the upcoming realm of video games. Sony would get their head start, but Nintendo would make sure to bring their biggest partners and best online infrastructure to ensure online would take off.

There's a thing, otl they used the discs because they didn't wanted to pay a cent to Sony, ittl they already have Philips as a partner, the co inventor of mmcd ie the DVD predecessor, when Nintendo might not want to play DVD vídeo (to not pay for it or just consider the consoles are for games) they can easily use DVD -rom as Phillips fucking own the format, so that's not the issue

Chapter 20: Majora's Perfect Time - July - December Year 2000
The expansion pack was just released for the Nintendo CDI. It was the same expansion pack as OTL. It would be used for Majora's Mask, Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong CDI.

Majora's Mask was intentionally an extension of Ocarina of Time, but when the developers for the game saw how much they could do with the game they decided to create a new game starring Link. The game was centered around the titular Majora's Mask and what destructive powers it held. A skull kid got hold of the mask and got possessed by it, sending the world into chaos. Link has to set out on a journey to help course correct all the wrong that the skull kid has done while possessed. Different ITTL is how many dungeons exists in Majora's Mask. ITTL Majora's Mask has two extra dungeons from OTL centered a possessed pirate ship and an undead crypt.

Another title was Perfect Dark by Rare. Filled with alien conspiracies, Perfect Dark centered around Joanna Dark as she works to uncover the alien conspiracies and counter act terrorism. Her place of employment is Carrington Institute which delves into the conflict going on between two alien races. The Mayan and Skedar are two warring alien civilizations that have involved the planet Earth into its latest war. Find out if Joanna Dark can solve the mystery between the alien conflict and bring the matter to an end.

Donkey Kong CDI was the same as OTL and had no major difference, except for being able to change the Kong's on the fly.

Nintendo decided to add Dual Layered DVD discs provided by their partner Phillips to increase the range and scope of games that could be made for their upcoming system. The system CPU would use IBM PowerPC Broadway @ 740 MHz. This would provide the necessary power needed for Nintendo's and their partner's big games. Nintendo would also finalize its deal with Enix. The deal with Enix went well and the FTC did not find any worries for the acquisition that went against regulation. As Nintendo was going through the deal, Enix had contact with an upstarting company called Level-5 and showing them the ropes of game development. Under Nintendo and Enix's guidance, Level-5 would learn how to make the best of games.

Hey I either just realized something or forgot about it but how is sonic doing in other media besides gaming during the 90's? Like were the dic cartoons still made? Did satam still get cancelled prematurely or did Ben Hurst get his 3rd season? And how were the comics doing, both archie and fleetway?

Thanks for reminding me of those comics. Will mention them in a future chapter.
