European Transfer News
European soccer transfer news:
The summer of 2004, especially after the Euros concluded, was a hectic one in the transfer space. Everton’s budding young star Wayne Rooney, coming off his dazzling debut at Euro 2004, was thought to be a target for several major English clubs - Man U, Chelsea, perhaps even Merseyside rival Liverpool - but in a surprise went to Newcastle United as easily the Tyneside club’s most exciting signing of the 20th century.
Chelsea, coming into the second year of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich’s ownership, made a splashy sale in selling Hernan Crespo to Real Madrid (thus denying AC Milan his talents in the upcoming campaign) and rotating around to splurge on Didier Drogba of Marseille. Sweden’s star striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovich, exited from Juventus to be snapped up at Real Madrid as the newest shiny toy of Florentino Perez, building on his strong Euro performance.
Real’s busy summer did not end with Zlatan. After failing to coax Michael Owen from Liverpool - who chose to stay and continue the club’s resurgence alongside Steven Gerard - the club made a run at getting at least one of the Dutch stars emerged from the Euros. Striker Robin van Persie alongside Zlatan could well have been lethal, but thanks to his deteriorating relationship with Feyenoord management throughout the season Van Persie had already been taken off the board by Dortmund by the time Real came calling, and thus Perez had to go with his backup, but no less of a talent - PSV’s Arjen Robben.
