The day is finally here for the next upcoming stars of the NHL as the 2005 NHL Entry Draft kicked off right with the Buffalo Sabers wasting no time running to the podium to officially make Sidney Crosby one of the most if not the most hyped prospects in recent history the number 1 pick in the draft
Buffalo hopes Crosby is able to kickstart the Sabers franchise who hope to return to the days of their Stanley Cup run several years back
Immediately according to Sabers officials Crosby jerseys were sold out right away at the Sabers official website store when they became available to buy
Next the Pittsburgh but possibly soon to be Milwaukee Penguins took the next best option in the Entry Draft by taking goalie Carey Price from the WHL’s Tri-City Americans team
Price had been one of the highest touted goalkeeping prospects in recent memory as the Penguins also wasted no time to make him the second overall pick
The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim meanwhile took USA Developmental Program Team Defenseman Jack Johnson with the 3rd overall pick which was the first stunner of the draft
At pick number 4 the Phoenix Coyotes with lead by new head coach the one and only Wayne Gretzky took Bobby Ryan from the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack
At pick number 5 overall the Blue Jackets took the first international player off the board Anže Kopitar from Slovenia who found himself playing in recent times with Sodertalje SK in Sweden
At pick number 6 overall the Washington Capitals took Brian Lee from Moorhead High School in Moorhead Minnesota though he has commitment at The University of North Dakota
At pick 7 overall the Edmonton Oliers took Ryan O'Marra from the OHL’s Eric Otters
At pick number 8 overall the New York Islanders took what many people thought was the best Centre in the draft in Gilbert Brulé from the WHL’s Vancouver Giants
At pick number 9 overall the Chicago Blackhawks took Marek Zagrapan from Slovakia but has been played for the QMJHL’s Chicoutimi Saguenéens
At pick number 10 overall rounding out the Top 10 the St Louis Blues took Marc Staal from the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves

The Sabers would continue the draft by taking University of Denver Centre Paul Stastny and goalie Ben Bishop from the NAHL’s Texas Tornado
A lot of people think the Sharks aced the draft by taking Minnesota High School Centre T.J Oshie who has also committed to the University of North Dakota and then later on taking Finnish goalie from SM’s Ilves Tuukka Rask
The Devils went ahead and took one of the steal’s of the draft in taking Ryan Parent from the OHL’s Guelph Storm and later on a Defenseman Kris Letang from QMJHL’s
Val-d'Or Foreurs
The Penguins continued building for the future by taking Devin Setoguchi from the WHL’s Saskatoon Blues and James Neal from the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers
The Maple Leafs in the first round took Marc-Édouard Vlasic from the QMJHL’s Quebec Remparts and then later on Sweden’s Niclas Bergfors from Sodertälje SK
