Beltre, Lee, Beltran traded
July 29-30, 2004: Some MLB deadline deals include Adrian Beltre going from the Dodgers to the Red Sox in exchange for Jeff Suppan, Byung-Hyun Kim and two prospects to be named. Another deal made by the Red Sox being the acquisition of Cliff Lee from Cleveland in exchange for Mike Timlin.

The biggest deal however, comes in the wee hours of July 30 in a three team trade between the Diamondbacks, White Sox and Royals. The deal involves, you guessed it, Carlos Beltran going from KC to Arizona, Randy Johnson going from Arizona to Chicago and the D-Backs and ChiSox sending prospects Sergio Santos and Brian Anderson to the Royals. The deal comes as KC is currently stuck between third and fourth in the AL Central while the D-Backs and White Sox are in Division contention. Unlike previous times, the trade is approved by the MLBPA.

Cubs, M's make trades
July 31st 2004: The Los Angeles Dodgers set hot hitting catcher Paul Lo Duca and NL doubles leader Shawn Green to the Chicago Cubs for prospect Felix Pie and Kyle Farnsworth

Also the Mariners boost their needed pitching for a post season run by trading for NL saves leader Danny Graves from the Reds in return for 2 prospects to be named later.

NBA coaching News
July 31, 2004: A major shakeup in the NBA coaching world. First, we see legendary coach Phil Jackson take an offer from an unlikely team, the Denver Nuggets. When asked why he took the Nuggets job, Jackson answered “They have a young exciting player in [Carmelo] Anthony and he seems like he could be something and i wanted to work with this kid.”

Just hours after Jackson’s announcement, his former team, the Lakers, announced the hiring of former Orlando Magic head coach Doc Rivers. Despite the Magic having the worst record the NBA last season, Lakers star Kobe Bryant suggested Rivers to GM Mitch Kupchak, who reached out to Rivers following his dismissal from Orlando.

Finally, one of the most legendary college coaches of all time, in stunning fashion is taking the next step to the pro ranks. That’s right, Mike Krzyzewski is going to NBA as the Chicago Bulls announced his hiring just minutes later. For Krzyzewski, a Chicago native, this was a special offer for him. “I know I’ll be beloved at Duke, but Chicago is my home and for me to come here is something I’ll treasure.”

Baseball Battle in the Bay
August 2, 2004: During the eighth inning in a game between the Braves and Giants, Aubrey Huff, acquired by Atlanta at the trade deadline, is plunked by Giants reliever Wayne Franklin. Huff throws his batting helmet in retaliation, with Franklin throwing his glove, both missing their targets. Huff then charges the mound, leading to both teams coming out of their dugouts as a brawl starts between the two teams. The brawl last 10 minutes as even some of the fans at Pacific Bell Park get a little involved.

Huff and Franklin are suspended for 2 month’s respectively for their actions in the fight. Some others are suspended for a few games as well, including Giants star Barry Bonds being suspended for two games. Oh, and the Giants win the game 7-2.

All will appeal and be reduced

One problem: There was an Arena Football League team around the same time that had a similar name (Los Angeles Avengers) and similar colors.

NHL anticipates war, Huff appeals suspension, will Clippers stay or go
August 3, 2004: Despite rumors of expansion, the NHL prepares for a tensions labor battle between the NHL and NHLPA over a new CBA, which is set to expire in the coming days. Commissioner Bettman says he "hopes to resolve the problem quickly but is prepared for the worst should it get to that point." He also added that the earliest an expansion team would join the league would be in 2008-09.

August 4, 2004: Aubrey Huff announces he plans to appeal his two month long suspension for his role in the Braves-Giants brawl on August 2.

August 4, 2004: Two more bids come in for the Clippers. One bid being from a group led by film producer Peter Guber and Casey Wasserman, owner of the Arena Football League's Los Angeles Avengers who would keep the team in Los Angeles at Staples Center, albeit they have hinted a potential rebrand to distance the team from Donald Sterling. Another bid comes in the form of Bill DeWitt Jr., owner of the MLB's St. Louis Cardinals, who would move the Clippers to St. Louis.

In the case that the Clippers move to one of the WBL's projected cities, the league announced that the team in the affected city would play elsewhere, most likely somewhere in the New York City area. Buffalo, Montreal and Hartford have also been thrown around as replacement cities for the WBL.

MLB Standings update
August 8, 2004: The MLB votes to not change Aubrey Huffs suspension, keeping it at two months.

August 9, 2004: A look at the MLB standings with two months to go. The AL East, as predicted, is a two-horse race between the Yankees and the Red Sox with Boston currently 3 games up on New York with an important series at Fenway coming up next week. Toronto is a distant third, Baltimore in fourth and Tampa Bay in fifth with the worst record in the AL. The Central currently sees the Alex Rodríguez led White Sox with a 9 game lead over a disappointing Twins team that may need a hot streak ala 1995 Mariners for any hope, not just for a playoff spot, but to just stay in Minnesota. Out West, the Angels are still in first with the once hot Mariners starting to fade as the Oakland A’s have gotten hot after being left for dead early in the season, now Oakland is fighting with Seattle for second and possibly first should Anaheim falter.

Over in the Senior Circuit, the NL East is currently a three way tug-o-war between the Phillies, Marlins and Braves. Philadelphia is currently in first but Florida is just 0.5 games back with Atlanta 2 back in a race that’ll probably be decided on the final days of the season. The Central is also a close race. Like the AL East, it’s two bitter rivals in the Cubs and Cardinals, fighting for not only the NL Central, but the best record in baseball, as the Cubs are in first with the Cardinals second currently with both on pace for 100 wins, especially with four other mediocre teams in the division, keep an eye on this one. The NL West is chaos, with the Giants, Diamondbacks and Rockies (yes) all tied for first place as of today. A big series coming up between Arizona and Colorado at Coors is coming, and could potentially decide the fate of either teams season.

December 20th 2003: The Cubs continue with a big free agency offseason by signing Bartolo Colon to a 3 year 20 million dollar deal.

December 21st 2003:Rumors start to speculate that the Rangers star and 2003 NL MVP Alex Rodriguez will be traded to the Chicago White Sox by the beginning of the new year. White Sox are willing to trade several key prospects and a key star to Texas in order to get the deal done.

December 22nd 2003: The Florida Marlins hire former Rangers and Mets manager Bobby Valentine as their new manager.

December 23rd 2003: Marlins add bullpen help signing Keith Foulke to a 2 year 20 million dollar deal

December 24th 2004: The Toronto Blue Jays cause a minor stunner and sign Mike Cameron to a 3 year 30 million dollar deal.
You still need to thread this post @Looper.

More developments in AL East, Another fantastic pitching performance
August 12, 2004: The race for the AL East crown continues to heat up, as the Red Sox fall 10-6, losing a 4 game series, 3-1, against the lowly Detroit Tigers. The other team in the equation, the Yankees, split their four game series out west against the Padres. These series outcomes mean the Yankees move a game closer to the Red Sox, with a series in New York coming up on August 16th between the two.

August 13, 2004: The Minnesota Twins get another superb game from Kyle Lohse, who throws his second 1-hitter of the season, pairing it with 14 strikeouts, as the Twins begin their three game series with the Orioles with a 5-0 win. It is worth mentioning that the Twins are on a five game win streak.
