I've always thought Steny Hoyer looked very British.
Steny Hamilton Hoyer is an American politician serving as the Prime Minister of the United States since 2019. He previously served as Foreign Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Home Secretary, as well as Secretary of Education. He is the first person to have served in all four Great Offices of State since Terry Sanford. First elected to Parliament in a 1981 by-election, Hoyer is part of the left wing of the Liberal Party. Hoyer joined the Second O'Neill ministry as Secretary of Education in 1983 and served in that position until the Liberals lost power in the next elections. Hoyer then served in the shadow cabinets of Phillip Burton and Dick Gephardt and became Home Secretary in the Gephardt ministry. After the Liberals lost power again in 1998, Hoyer became Deputy Leader in Gephardt's second shadow cabinet. Although Hoyer was defeated by Massachusetts MP John Kerry in the race to succeed Gephardt, Kerry appointed Hoyer Chancellor of the Exchequer in his ministry. However, Hoyer's tenure coincided with the Great Recession. Despite the best efforts of the Kerry ministry, things continued to worsen and they were defeated in the 2008 elections. Hoyer, associated with the economic downturn, declined to seek the leadership after Kerry stepped down.
When the Liberals returned to power in 2013, Hoyer was not part of the Cuomo ministry. However, when Cuomo resigned in 2016 and was succeeded by Foreign Secretary Hillary Clinton, Clinton named him her successor as Foreign Secretary. After the 2018 elections, in which the Liberals had to make a coalition with the Social Democrats, Hoyer retained his post. When Prime Minister Clinton resigned in 2018, the governing coalition almost collapsed until both parties agreed upon Hoyer as a compromise Prime Minister. Hoyer, at age 79, then became the oldest Prime Minister in American history and gained the fourth of the four Great Offices of State. Hoyer's ministry has been extremely troubled so far, due to the fragility of the coalition and volatile economy. Hoyer has toyed with the idea of calling special elections, an unprecedented but constitutional possibility. Thus far, public opinion is against it.
