Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

Damn! I just realized my entry doesn't qualify, since the transition wasn't peaceful.:( Oh well. I have another in mind, and this one definitely would be peaceful. Gandhi wouldn't have it any other way. :)

Here is an entry that actually qualifies for the latest challenge.:eek::eek: Also from my Danke Schön, Freiherr von der Goltz timeline. The first flag is the old South African flag both ITTL and OTL. ITTL, Gandhi does not leave South Africa. Instead, he remains, continues organizing, and becomes part of a more broadly based African National Congress, which is much more successful in pressing for civil rights. After years of negotiation, and a moderate amount of civil unrest, a slow transition to majority rule is agreed to by all parties. For the first five years of the transitional period, a "four quarters" flag, ITTL including the flag of the ANC (similar flags in OTL, of course not including an ANC component, were seriously considered for adoption by the legislature in South Africa), becomes an interim national flag. In this case the clunkiness and design-by-committee look of the flag is not a big problem, because of its known interim status. The present national flag, adopted in 1938 by the first parliament in which a majority of the members were non-white, was the winner of a national design contest.

Yeah, those are hard.
The one I have in mind - assuming I can nab access to the right programs tomorrow - is technically peaceful if only to avoid civil war and/or annihilation :D

Why do I have visions of Gene Wilder playing the exiled son of the disgraced ex-King of Liechtenstein repeatedly saying, "LiechtenSTEEN, it's LiechtenSTEEN!"?

Well, I guess that wasn't a particularly good challenge. Entries close this time (ish) tomorrow, so if there are any outstanding entries, get them in.

It's ok just the peaceful bit makes us think a bit longer.
I'm also currently limited to paint so can't show the full history.
Should have it up tonight - good thing you're in another time zone :D

I figured that everyone and his mate has done violent overthrows, and with them there's not necessarily a desire to link to the past.

Yeah. When I fly to America, I spend 17 hours in a plane and land before I've taken off.

CABALLERIA

Caballeria (geographically, think Paraguay, Uruguay and a little bit of northern Argentina) had for 49 years been under the control of the Sarmiento family, 3 of whom served as President with dictatorial powers. During the last 5 year of this regime, corruption and inflation were reaching new levels and eventually the army ousted the Sarmientos in a near-bloodless revolution. The interim President was General Antonio Joaquin de Güemes, who surprised much of the world by keeping the army’s promise to hold a vote on a new constitution within 20 months and free elections within a further 6 months.

Respect for the flag introduced during the Sarmiento regime was near zero, so the interim Junta commissioned a transitional flag, a divided horizontal bars arrangement in colours traditional to the nation separated by a white bar which centrally bore a picture of a dove of peace.

Although the ensuing elections were accepted as being free and fair, the victor was an extremist party (Partido Patriótico Social) who not only introduced a flag bearing its own party symbol but, within months of attaining power, scrapped the new constitution in favour of their own, authoritarian version.

Here's mine
It's a tad brief as Paint means I can't put the full fancy list.
Anyways in brief...
Kingdom of England & Ireland under goes a Regency (think "Empty Throne") in 1631 becoming the Regency of England, Ireland, Wales, and the Isles.
This undergoes a Religious Revolution c1681 becoming reduced to the Commonwealth of England, Ireland, and Wales.
By 1912 the Zirconist Party* takes power and expands the state as the Commonwealth of Britain
By 1958 under threat of civil war/nuclear annihalation by the League of Europe the more reasonable 2nd generation party leaders agree to reexpanding the electorate, allowing multiparty elections etc.
In 1963 the Commonwealth of Britain becomes the Federal Commonwealth of Britain and adopts a new flag.

*think Authoritarian State Socialists with fetish for "Hybrid Vigour" Eugenics

Am I mistaken or is that a Spanish version of the name Equestria? :p
Well, my name for the nation was inspired by Simon Bolivar and Bolivia. Paraguay had a 'liberator' by the name of Pedro Juan Caballero - I dropped the 'o' and added 'ia'.

Caballero is of course a common name in Spanish speaking countries, it appears on the doors of almost half the public toilets.
