OTL, Cheng Kai Shek, in order to devastate the communists and rebellions in China, became far more autocratic than he already was and singed the Triangle Alliance with Hitler and Mussolini. Japan, wary of this revitalizing china and the fact the Hirohito Purges had killed many valuable, if rather aggressive, officers, initiated the Pacific Pact with the Americans and British (America not joining until after Hirohito made clear it was a defensive pact)

Of course, war was to come. in 1939, simultaneously with Germany marching into Poland, the Chinese stormed the Japanese Manchurian territories. The war in the pacific was more brutal than the western front could hope to be. Millions of Chinese men and women marched with the fury of the dragon of china, with the might of the german eagle being their fire. Japan herself was never truly threatened due to their fleets but their empire that Hirohito was so desperate to liberalize and turn into a haven for Asiatic peoples? Nearly destroyed. The Chinese weren't destroyed until America used Project Knight-the nuclear bomb. Nanjing was incarcerated. That war lasted 7 years compared to the Germans' 5.

Of course, America, coming out of the war by far the strongest nation bar the Soviets and their own Nuclear Force, dived out the New Chinese Empire-everything between Nanjing and Mongolia went to Japan, now little more than a Yankee Puppet; the south was the Republic Of China; finally, the Soviets could do what they wished with the Turks and Tibet, now the Ughar People's Republic and Socialist State of Tibet. The Frozen War had begun.

And, despite earlier speculation, has yet to end. the Soviets may've lost a lot of land briefly in the early nineties in Europe. But the american retreat due to the Japanese-American Split in the late eighties over conflict in the Philippines wound up giving them time to restore order to their clients. the entire Iron Curtain was finally reunited and absorbed into the already massive country yesterday with East Germany now merely a state in the Grand Socialist State of Eurasia.

But what if the roles were reversed? what if the Good Emperor of Japan was killed for his actions, like during the shogunates from before would've done while China was still a splintered, but democratic (mostly) nation while Japan invaded them? Would Imperial Japan use the old 'Pearl Harbor Plan?' what of the Frozen War? Do the Soviets truly shatter under their own weight?

That was the time before the revolution in Japan which led to a socialist regime until it reformed into a more moderate Democratic Country similar to Finland in the 80s just before Poland reformed itself.

Joining the Axis might mean that the right wing gov.t remains.

It probably would have taken even more than that- by the late 30s, after the 1st Showa Purge, even the Right's biggest issues are holding onto Manchukuo the Dominion of Korea and the Kwantung Protectorate to avoid embarrassment from the apology to the League of Nations for the initial conduct in the "pacification" of Manchukuo (and to deny Chiang and Wang the naval bases they needed), and lower taxes for the zaibatsu (with whom many right-leaning Peers were affiliated). Then War Minister Baron Muto and Navy Minister Yonai were strongly opposed to war with the West, correctly seeing it as a disaster in the making.

However, if officers such as Sadao Araki, Hajime Sugiyama, Seishiro Itagaki or even Hideki Tojo hadn't been purged, I shudder to think how they would have influenced the new breed of officers. No more French exchanges for IJA officers or British exchanges for IJN officers for sure

The Right wing gov.t banned alot of literature and manga due to their left leaning messages and those boomed during the socialist times and after and many were against the plans of the right wing gov.t.

So only joining the war in the side of hitler might save the Right Wing gov.t

I don’t know... I just don’t think a basis for fascism exists in Japanese culture. I mean, I guess if you really stretched it the worship of the emperor could evolve into something like it, but it wouldn’t really be the same, and I doubt it would have been compatible with the other axis powers.

Depend if the emperor 'descend to earth' as some people argue hirohito have a massive hand in some movement, but saw how militarist were so rabid dogs would not be controlled, that is why slowly he supported leftist as long keep the armed forces funded but 'controlled' and the 2-26 incident was the armed forces shooting themselves in the foot, at least the navy was able to save face, but the army purge make the soviet one look tame...

OOC: Any PoD after the takeover of Manchuria is far too late to prevent the complete takeover of Japan by ultranationalist expansionist officers or allow for America to sign an explicit defense treaty with Japan.

OOC: Probably ASB but the idea was that the ultranationalists took over, but Hirohito was competent enough and given time enough to purge and undo their crap.
