WI: Republic of China with a twist

In the Boxer Rebellion, the Southeastern provinces under various governors had an agreement named the Mutual Protection of Southeast China, in which the various governors were not involved in the War and had almost established a Republic under Li Hongzhang. But what if Li Hongzhang actually became president of a Republic of China? Would this Republic be merely a transitional state until the Qing Dynasty was safe, or would it be a permanent end to the Dynasty? How much would the Republic have to comply with Western demands and concessions? Would this Republic end up as to preserve Western influence, and how would the pre-ATL Republic revolutionaries (eg: Sun Yetsen) view this new republic?

Did Li like the Qing?
Yeah. He was the foreign minister and part of the reformists all the way from the time of the Tongzhi Restoration, and had to sign many of China's unequal treaties. He died after signing the Qing's surrender following the Boxer Rebellion.
Would Britain try to intervene with France?
Will Russia not try to take advantage?
They were invading China at the time due to the Boxer Rebellion, so I would think so. Perhaps the British would see the new Republic as a tool to maintain their interests in China.

That could actually see revenue. Make Chinese traders get opium from Britain and sell it in Britain.
