Depends is this a victorious Ostrogothic kingdom? Perhaps one who never got involved in a Byzantine-Ostrogothic war? Or maybe a Ostrogothic rump state subject of Byzantinium?Or essentially, how much can be retained?
Why not? What is more uncertain is what form this co-option takes. Though would the Ostrogoths even want to accept the Lombard people into Italy? Where not the Ostrogoths at this time, soon to be Italians with only a hint of their Gothic past? They might prefer to support them in Pannonia or perhaps in Illyria.Could the Lombards be coopted?
The Ostrogothic kingdom might face the same problem that Byzantium did, being occupied somewhere else. If the kingdom is not preoccupied somewhere else then i think they would be able to hold it. Though Illyria will likely face raids, and the Ostrogoths may be forced to pay tribute.Impact on Slavic migration into Illyria?
Etc etc etc!
If it ever happens ATL.I would say up until the time the Franks decide to "help" the papacy under Pepin and Charlemagne - then welcome the Ostrogoth to the Carolinian Empire.
Maybe it would be better for the Ostrogothic kingdom had Amalsuntha's son lived longer and preferably had heirs of his own. During which time the Ostrogoths would more closely integrate and align with the Italian elite. Or solidify their hold on Italy, though some kind of merger between the Ostrogoths and Italian were likely (and ongoing).considering Emperor Justinian had an alliance with them up until the point of Amalasuintha death let's say she lives and she hands over the kingdom to Justinian
with little to no problems making Justinian King of the ostrogoths and avoiding the bloody Affair of the gothic Wars.
Well if the Ostrogothic kingdom remains a polity within Byzantium then this may be possible.37 years after Justine's death the line of Justinian is dead and they could probably separate without any problems considering the byzantines were having a fun time Civil War and ostrogoth Italy would probably be pretty autonomous at this point having not been brutally subjugated by the byzantines
basically Justinian would be emperor of Byzantium and King of the ostrogoths so the kingdom of the ostrogoths would remain a thing but only in name until after the line of Justinian ended
The Visigoths of Iberia integrated into the post-Roman society there. Same goes for the Burgundians who first integrated into the post-Roman society, and later into the Frankish dominion. Not much there is a trend that the Eastern barrberians ie the goths ,burgondians , vandals etc did not last .
There are many reasons one of them was that they where much more noamdic (ie semi nomadic) that their western counterparts since herding to them was much more prevelant the trendils of civilization where weaker that is why most of them adapted quickly to costums of where they conquered due to this and more none of these states survived in the long run .
If justinian does not kill It the system could rot or the Frank's invade them .
My personal opinion is that, given a peaceful relationship with Eastern Romans, they'll go the same way as the Visigoths*.Or essentially, how much can be retained?
