An MLB Collaborative TL: Piece of Cake: The Cubs win Game 6 in '03

Fighting for all
  • March 7th, 2004

K-1 Kickboxing hosted its K-1 K'FESTA show live from the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan. The show featured the Lightweight World GP one-night tournament to crown the first ever K-1 World Lightweight champion, as well as first round matchups of the K-1 Heavyweight world GP.

At the start of the show, Shane Campbell of Australia, considered among the favorites, easily took care of Koji Yoshimoto with a nasty right hook right on the button in the second round, while Mongolian Jadamba Naratugulang beat Genki Yamamoto by unanimous decision. On the other side of the bracket, american Duane Ludwig knocked out Turk Serkan Yilmaz with a beautiful roundhouse kick to the liver in the 2nd round, while Satrou Kobayashi pulled off the upset by TKOing Kaoklai Kaovichit in the 3rd and final round to the approval of the yokohama crowd.

Two heavywight GP first round matches were up next to give the lightweight GP competitors a break. First off, a tactical bout between Brazilian Francisco Filho and german Stefan Leko wasn't the most exciting bout, but the German outboxed his opponent with crisp jabs and thunderous low kicks to win it by unanimous decision. In the second match, it was the opposite, for Jerome le Banner and Yosuke "Bun-Bun Maru" Fujimoto delivered an epic slugfest where both guys traded bombs at each other. Fujimoto rocked Le Banner many times in the first round, but the frenchman regained his composure and pummeled Fujimoto with crisp and powerful shots until the referee stopped the fight in the 2nd round.

In the Lightweighf semi-finals, Shane Campbell had a tougher tine than expected against Jadamba Naratugulang, but the australian still managed to grab tbe UD win after 3 rounds of crisp, skillful kickboxing. Then, in the 2nd semi-finals, Satoru Kobayashi started strong, getting some nice, clean kicks on Duane Ludwig, but the american managed to knock the young japanese fighter out in the 2nd with a big overhand left counter right on the temple.

In another heavyweight GP 1st round match, Kyokushin Karateka Glaube Feitosa took on Japan's Tsuyoshi Nakasako. Feitosa eluded Nakasako with his head movement and his signature Brazilian Kick, but somehow, Nakasako manGed to score big strikes on Feitosa, using ring cutting movements to trap the brazilian into corners. In the third round, a big combination by Nakasako sent Feitosa on the canvas for a crucial knockdown, which would prove the difference as Nakasako wins by una imous decision to go to the quarter-finals!

Finally, the semi main event, the Lightweight GP final to crown the first ever K-1 world lightweight champion. Shane Campbell tried to outbox Duane Ludwig, but the american's kicks on the australian's legs would prove fruitful, for the american would score big headshots on Campbell, taking advantage of his weakened legs to hit a knee strike that sent the Australian crashing on the mat in the 3rd round!

And just like that, Duane Ludwig is K-1Lightweight champion of the world! It is an upset, too, for he was considered only the 4th favorite of the tournament! This is gonna give K-1 promoters Fighting and Entertainement group some very promising potential to break into the american market with an americna champion.

In the main event, it is a dream match between the gentle giant Semmy Schilt agaisnt 4-time K-1 World GP winner Ernesto Hoost in the latter's final K-1 Grand Prix participation. Hoost showcased his technical excellence in the early goings, but the younger, larger and crisper Schilt took over in the 2nd and 3rd round to expose Hoost's declining skills and grab the unanimous decision win to advance to the Quarter-Finals.

after the match, a retirement ceremony took place for Ernesto Hoost. The living legend said his final goodbyes to the japanese crowd and received a hug from Semmy Schilt as he waved good bye to the world of kickboxing.

K-1's next show is K-1 ROMANEX 2004, on May 22nd at Saitama Super Arena, featuring K-1 Light Heavyweight GP matchups as well as the K-1 Welterweight GP featuring an all-star field with fighters like 2002 MAX champion Albert Kraus, Andy Souwer, Mike Zambidis, Masato and Thailand ace Buakaw Por Pramuk.

    NHL Comebacks
  • March 2, 2004: The Hurricanes head out to San Jose to take on the Sharks. For Carolina, this game means almost nothing, as the Canes are long out of the playoff picture with about a month to go in the regular season, but for the Sharks, this is a big game, as San Jose is currently 6th in the West and fighting for a Division title and home ice come playoff time. The game starts poorly for the home team, as Sean Hill scores for Carolina just 21 seconds in. It would get worse, though as by the end of the period, it was 3-0 in favor of the Hurricanes with goals by Bret Hedican and Craig Adams. Carolina would add to their lead in the second, as Hill would score again, as would Marty Murray on a power play to make it 5-0 Canes after 2, causing the Sharks to pull goalie Evgeni Nabokov in favor of backup Vesa Toskala. But in the third period, a switch flipped. It began with Jonathan Cheechoo scoring the Sharks first goal 2 minutes in. Then, Patrick Marleau would score two goals to pull San Jose within two. With 1:33 left and Toskala pulled, Vincent Damphousse would score to make it a one-goal game. Then, with just 3 ticks left on the clock, Marleau got a hat trick, deking 3 Carolina players before beating Kevin Weekes to tie the game on a beautiful goal. In overtime, Cheechoo scores his second goal of the day, beating Weekes off the face-off to give San Jose an improbable 6-5 victory, tying the largest comeback in NHL history.

March 3, 2004: Another day, another crazy NHL comeback. In the Kings-Blackhawks game at Staples Center, LA jumps out to a 4-0 lead in just 16 minutes of game play, thanks to goals from Luc Robitaille, Trett Klatt, Ziggy Palffy and Michael Cammalleri, with two of the goals being shorthanded. But in the second period, Chicago responded with four goals of their own, two from Tuomo Ruutu (both coming just 55 seconds apart) and one each from Scott Nichol and Alex Zhamnov to knot the game at 4-4. The third would see LA take a two-goal lead, thanks to goals from Jozef Stumpel (In the process chasing Jocelyn Thibault from the net) and another from Robitaille. But Chicago just won't die, as Steve Sullivan brings Chicago to within one with just 38 seconds to go. Then, with the net empty and time running out, Zhamnov stuns the LA faithful with a goal that beat the horn with just 0.2 showing on the clock, sending the game into overtime at 6 all. In overtime, Bryan Berard would score just 47 seconds in to give the Blackhawks the win, and send the Kings to 10th in the West, and put their playoff hopes in jeopardy.

Owens, MLB Expansion, Brady to Miami (possibly)
  • March 4th 2004:The San Francisco 49ers in a blockbuster deal send Terrell Owens to the Minnesota Vikings for a 2004 3rd and 5th Round Pick and veteran guard Everett Lindsay

Owens finally gets his wish to be out of San Francisco and analysts start to rave about Randy Moss and Terrell Owens as a future duo together in Minnesota.

March 5th 2004: Television news anchor Larry King and Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin announce the plans for a Washington DC expansion MLB team if the Expos fail to relocate to the area soon.

King previously in the early 1990s mounted a campaign to bring a MLB team to Buffalo New York

March 6th 2004:Rumors heat up about Tom Brady possibly being traded to the division rival Miami Dolphins or the New York Giants. Despite making the playoffs the Dolphins reportedly want a upgrade at quarterback

Warner may be a Dolphin, Twins are for sale
  • March 7, 2004: The Dolphins also are eyeing a potential Kurt Warner signing in addition to being rumored for Brady.

March 8, 2004: Minnesota Twins owner Carl Pohlad announces that the Twins will be for sale. This comes following a rejection by Twin Cities voters to construct a new ballpark for the team and a lease at the MetroDome that sees the team get almost no revenue from signage, luxury seats or parking at a stadium that caused many fielders to have trouble tracking fly balls and also deflates due to heavy snow on many occasions. Attendance has been in the bottom 10 for the last few years despite 2 straight AL Central division titles the past 2 seasons, which certainly doesn’t help matters. As the prime candidate to move is the Expos, the Twins could go right with them.

March 9, 2004: A group led by Casino magnate Phil Ruffin, film producer Peter Guber and former NBA star Magic Johnson (who was part of a group led by Mark Cuban) come together seeking an MLB franchise for Las Vegas, weather it be via moving the Expos, moving the Twins, or expansion.

    UCL Round of 16
  • March 9-10, 2004: The second leg of the Champions League commences. To begin, on the 9th, Chelsea hold Stuttgart to a scoreless draw to win the draw, 2-1. Deportivo La Corūna lose to Juventus in Turin, but their 3-1 win in the first leg means they advance on an aggregate score of 3-2. Manchester United are stunned by Mourinho and Porto at Old Trafford, losing 1-0 in the match and 2-1 on aggregate, while Real Sociedad down Lyon by an aggregate score of 2-0 following a 0-0 draw at the Stade de Gerland. On the 10th, Arsenal throttle Celta Vigo 4-0 at home, winning on aggregate 5-0. Monaco narrowly avoid an upset at the hands of Lokomotiv Moscow, scoring two goals at home to win the tie, 2-0, while AC Milan have significantly less trouble with Sparta Prague, winning 3-1 and 6-2 on aggregate. Finally, Bayern Munich stun Real Madrid on a Bastian Schweinsteiger goal in the third minute of added time, sending Los Blancos home via the away goals rule, with the aggregate score being 3-3, and the match result being 3-2.

New Orleans joins the MLB sweepstakes. Business leaders Pat Taylor, Gary Chouest, and J.M. Bernard are joined by Saints owner Tom Benson, Zephyrs owner Ron Couhig, Hornets owner George Shinn, and former Breakers owner Joe Canizaro. The group announces its intention to bring an expansion or relocated team to New Orleans.

    Nassar Indicted
  • February 16, 2004: Larry Nassar is formally indicted on multiple counts of sexual abuse and possession of child pornography in state and federal courts. Bail is not granted on the charges, so he remains in jail. His wife announces that she's filing for divorce.

(I could use a little help fleshing this out--on a side note, I do have an idea for the upcoming Indianapolis 500.)

    I will.

2004 NCAA Men’s basketball Tournament first round highlights

    Day 1: March 18

The biggest shock of the first day was #14 seed UIC stunning #3 seed Texas 62-57, thanks to a 13-2 run in the second half as the Fire win their first tournament game in school history. Other highlights saw #11 seed Air Force stun #6 seed Michigan State on A.J. Kuhle three with 2.1 seconds left for the 60-59 upset, number 2 seed Kentucky survive an upset bid from Monmouth, winning by just 4 points as Monmouth outscored Kentucky 39-32 in the second half, #1 seeds St. Joseph's, UConn and Arizona all cruise to relatively easy wins to start their tournament journeys and a very long day at the office for #8 seed Texas Tech and #9 Dayton as the two go into not one, not two, but three overtimes that saw the Red Raiders prevail 100-96 thanks to 51 from Curtis Marshall.

    Day 2: March 19

Another day, another big upset. This time, this was one of the biggest upsets in tournament history as #2 seed Duke was stunned by #15 seed Montana 69-61 in a game that saw Duke star JJ Reddick not play due to food poisoning. After the game, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski answered questions about his future, as he is rumored to possibly get offers from the NBA about coaching there, as his contract with Duke expires after the season. Another huge upset was another #14 seed in Vermont knocking off #3 seed Stanford thanks to an improbable buzzer beater by German Mopa Njila for the 59-57 win. Another clutch shot came from Florida's David Lee as the Gators sunk #10 seed Iowa St with Lee's 3 pointer late in regulation. And before you ask, no, a #16 seed did not win this year, as Illinois, the 4th #1 seed in the tournament, took down #16 Florida A&M to prevent hell from freezing over. Finally, in the last game of the round of 64, #13 seed Pacific took out #4 Georgia Tech after being down by 14 with an 80-77 win as Georgia Tech missed exactly 20 shots in the second half out of 31 they took.

    Sterling Exposed
  • March 19, 2004: Some breaking news out of the NBA, as Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling appeard to have said a racial slur to two Clipper assistants during a meeting. The NBA announces it will conduct an investigation into the Clippers following this.

    Round of 32 first day
  • March 20, 2004: The second round of the NCAA Tournament begins with a blowout, as 2 seed Kentucky steamrolls 7 seed Boston College by a score of 89-62. The day also features St. Joseph’s dominating an obviously fatigued Texas Tech squad, with Jameer Nelson taking advantage to score 34, as the Hawks move to the Sweet 16, 78-58. The same can’t be said for fellow one seed UConn, who fall victim to the first upset of the round, losing to potential future conference opponents Southern Illinois 67-61. UIC again is able to stun the world, beating Wisconsin in Overtime, 65-63, while Air Force falls at the hands of North Carolina with a 70-63 score line. Arizona narrowly survives an encounter with Utah, as Andre Iguodala driving for a clutch layup with 6.3 seconds left to win the game, 61-59. 5 seed Wake Forest would get a double-double from Chris Paul as they would beat 4 seed Pitt, 77-63. Finally, 3 seed Florida State uses an early 23-3 run to blow out Providence by an ugly score of 86-69.

    Round of 32 day 2
  • 2004 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament: Round of 32

March 21, 2004: For the second time in as many days, a number 1 seed goes down, as a Dee Brown-less Illinois team falls victims to upset minded Oregon 64-56, Pacific's surprise run continues as they knock off Maryland 72-66. The same could not be said for Vermont, who got blown out by Cincinnati 69-50 and for Montana, who fell to a 36-point performance by Kirk Snyder and his Nevada team 72-58, Oklahoma State blows out Indiana on the backs of 40 from Joey Graham in a 80-62 win, Florida's run continues, upsetting #2 seed Kansas 69-64, Mississippi State rolls into the sweet 16 with a convincing win over Georgetown 78-56 and to close the second round out, number 4 seed Gonzaga beats up on Xavier 71-56 to head to their first sweet 16 since 1999.

More Sterling news, Cubs make a move
  • March 22, 2004: More Donald Sterling drama, as two more tapes of the Clippers owner doing controversial stuff emerges. One tape shows Sterling touching a female employee without her consent during a game played last December. The woman employee is of mixed African-Asian decent and will not release her name due to safety concerns. Another tape seems to have Sterling using the N-word during a speech in the locker after a win against the defending champion Spurs in January when referring to San Antonio star Tim Duncan, even though Duncan is mixed-race. This adds even more fuel to an already burning fire as the NBA begins it's investigation into the Clipper organization.

Also March 22, 2004: The defending NL Champion Chicago Cubs make a semi-surprising move to bolster their pitching staff 12 days before the start of the 2004 season, sending Mark Bellhorn and two pitching prospects to the Oakland A's in exchange for Tim Hudson and Barry Zito. The move comes after losing Carlos Zambrano and failing to get any other pitchers on the market in free agency.

    Clippers protest
  • March 23, 2004: The Clippers play their first game since the Donald Sterling tapes were released. Before the game, the player discussed refusing to play the game at home against the visiting New Orleans Hornets, but in the end, the Clipper players decided to wear their jerseys without the Clippers word mark on them to protest Sterling’s actions. However, the Hornets win comfortably 101-84 with Baron Davis scoring 42 to lead the way.

    Some Huge NFL deals
  • March 9th 2004:The Washington Redskins trade Champ Bailey to the Oakland Raiders for a 2004 2nd Round Pick and a 2005 4th round pick and veteran defensive end Trace Armstrong

March 10th 2004: The Denver Broncos announce they will hold onto running back Clinton Portis for the 2004 season

March 10th 2004: The Miami Dolphins made one of the biggest deals in free agency by signing one of the best players on the market in signing Antoine Winfield to a 6 year 40 million dollar deal

March 11th 2004: Deion Sanders announces that he will unretire for the 2004 season and try to return to play for the Atlanta Falcons.

March 13th 2004: In a massive blockbuster trade the New England Patriots trade quarterback Tom Brady to the Miami Dolphins for their 2004 and 2005 2nd round picks and All Pro safety Brock Marion

    Sweet 16 part 1
  • March 25, 2004: NCAA Sweet 16, Part 1

The day began with people hoping for the impossible to happen, as 13 seed Pacific took on 1 seed and undefeated St. Joseph's. This game actually started out close, with the underdog Tigers even having the lead at one point early in the second half. But as they always seem to do, St. Joe's responded with super play from their super star, as Jameer Nelson went on a tear, scoring 14 points in a row by himself as St. Joseph's marched on thanks to 48 in the second half in a 80-65 win. Another Cinderella, UIC, was hoping to continue their surprise run in March. But Mississippi State said "not here, not today" to those plans, getting off to a good start and never letting go, crushing the Fire 87-58 thanks to a double-double from Timmy Bowers as the Bulldogs led wire-to-wire. The third game of the day would be a fun one, as blue-blood North Carolina faced upstart Florida. For most of the game, the Gators seemed to be in control, with Adrian Moss and David Lee having great games with 28 and 26 points respectively. But the Tar Heels were never out of it, with Raymond Felton sending the game to overtime with a 3-pointer with 11 ticks left in regulation. In overtime, Carolina would build a solid lead that Florida could not recover from and the Tar Heels headed to the Elite 8, 74-70 was the final score. Finally, Arizona faced Gonzaga. This game would be the tale of two halves, as Arizona absolutely dominated the first half, with Andre Iguodala scoring 31 in the first half alone as Arizona lead 45-24 at the break. The second half though, Gonzaga would slowly start to come back. With just 2 minutes left, the Zags had narrowed the lead down to just 4 points thanks to 22 second half points and 9 second half boards from freshman Adam Morrison. But Arizona showed resiliency in front of a lot of Wildcat fans in Phoenix, going on a 10-4 run to end the game with a final score of 78-68.

    Sweet 16, part 2
  • NCAA Sweet 16 2004: Day 2

Continuing on from his performances in the first two rounds, Chris Paul would continue to dominate come Sweet 16 time, recording 39 points and 11 rebounds as his Wake Forest squad rolled into the elite 8, dispatching #9 seed Southern Illinois 64-53. Another surprise team, Oregon, would see the end to their run as well, as Oklahoma State would start the game out on a 22-6 run and never looked back, going on to win 72-56. The third game of the day saw Kentucky continue their winning ways, winning their 14th straight dating back to February, led by 33 from Cliff Hawkins as the ‘Cats rolled by Cincinnati 66-51. The last game of the day was probably the most exciting, as another hot team in Florida State faced Nevada. FSU jumped out to sizable lead early, but the Wolfpack seemed to hang around all game, with Kevin Pinkney and Kirk Snyder seemingly keeping Nevada in it. Eventually, the Wolfpack took the lead with just 12 seconds left on a deep three from Pinkney and would hang on for the one-point win 69-68.

    Elite 8 matchups

    East Regional - March 27, 2004
    St. Joseph’s vs North Carolina

    West regional - March 27, 2004
    Arizona vs Mississippi State

    South regional - March 28, 2004
    Kentucky vs Wake Forest

    Midwest regional - March 28, 2004
    Oklahoma State vs Nevada

UCL Quarterfinals, first Leg, Elite Eight
  • March 23-24, 2004: The Quarterfinals of the Champions League is underway. AC Milan begins the jamboree with a good win over Real Sociedad, 2-0, at the Anoeta Stadium. AS Monaco and Deportivo La Coruña fight to a 1-1 draw in Spain, and Wednesdays action features Arsenal beat Porto 1-0 in the third match on the Iberian Peninsula, while the first leg is capped with Chelsea picking apart Bayern Munich 3-0 in Deutschland.

March 27, 2004: The Elite Eight is finally upon us, as St Joseph’s and North Carolina begin the action. The game is fairly straightforward for the Hawks, as they dominate the game from wire to wire in the 73-55 win. Arizona-Mississippi State is the same way, as the Wildcats cruise to an 87-70 win behind Andre Iguodala’s 33 points.

March 28, 2004: The other Wildcats, Kentucky, have an incredible encounter with Wake Forest. In regulation, Chris Paul misses a jumper to win, so the game goes to OT. That OT period is dull, as each team finishes with 4 points, and in Double OT, UK scores 19 points to Wake Forest’s 5, so Kentucky moves on, 81-67. The final game is Oklahomas State and Nevada, which ends a very boring Elite Eight, as the Cowboys win 93-68 over the Wolf Pack.

    Final Four

    April 3, 2004- Kentucky-St. Joseph’s

    April 3, 2004- Arizona-Oklahoma State

    Heartbreak in Highbury
  • March 28, 2004: In one of the biggest matches of the Premier League season, Manchester United end Arsenal’s dream of an unbeaten season, winning 2-0 thanks to a brace from Ryan Giggs. This tightens the PL title race, with United only 2 points back of Arsenal, and Liverpool only trailing by 5 points to the Gunners.

Warner to B-More, Chipper injured, Jameer arrested
  • March 30, 2004: Big news out of the NFL, as Kurt Warner announces he is signing a 4-year, 80 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens. The move comes after Warner was benched in the 2003 season in favor of Mark Bulger for his previous team, the St. Louis Rams and it seemed the Rams had a desire to move on from the former league MVP and Super Bowl champion. For Baltimore, this may be the missing piece they need for a Super Bowl run following a disappointing loss in the 2003 playoffs.

March 31, 2004: Some bad news for fans of the Atlanta Braves just 5 days before opening day, as Chipper Jones is hurt in a spring training game against the Blue Jays, suffering a torn ACL. The injury is expected to keep Jones out of the lineup for at least the first 4 months of the season.

April 1, 2004: Not the April Fools Day St. Joseph's wanted at all, as superstar Jameer Nelson is arrested for DUI in San Antonio less than two days before his team takes on Kentucky in their Final Four matchup and he will miss the game. Team coach Phil Martelli commented that "It's obviously a blow to our team wanted, but we'll try not to think about it to much and we should be just fine."
