March 25, 2004: NCAA Sweet 16, Part 1
The day began with people hoping for the impossible to happen, as 13 seed Pacific took on 1 seed and undefeated St. Joseph's. This game actually started out close, with the underdog Tigers even having the lead at one point early in the second half. But as they always seem to do, St. Joe's responded with super play from their super star, as Jameer Nelson went on a tear, scoring 14 points in a row by himself as St. Joseph's marched on thanks to 48 in the second half in a 80-65 win. Another Cinderella, UIC, was hoping to continue their surprise run in March. But Mississippi State said "not here, not today" to those plans, getting off to a good start and never letting go, crushing the Fire 87-58 thanks to a double-double from Timmy Bowers as the Bulldogs led wire-to-wire. The third game of the day would be a fun one, as blue-blood North Carolina faced upstart Florida. For most of the game, the Gators seemed to be in control, with Adrian Moss and David Lee having great games with 28 and 26 points respectively. But the Tar Heels were never out of it, with Raymond Felton sending the game to overtime with a 3-pointer with 11 ticks left in regulation. In overtime, Carolina would build a solid lead that Florida could not recover from and the Tar Heels headed to the Elite 8, 74-70 was the final score. Finally, Arizona faced Gonzaga. This game would be the tale of two halves, as Arizona absolutely dominated the first half, with Andre Iguodala scoring 31 in the first half alone as Arizona lead 45-24 at the break. The second half though, Gonzaga would slowly start to come back. With just 2 minutes left, the Zags had narrowed the lead down to just 4 points thanks to 22 second half points and 9 second half boards from freshman Adam Morrison. But Arizona showed resiliency in front of a lot of Wildcat fans in Phoenix, going on a 10-4 run to end the game with a final score of 78-68.
