Green Bay Packers @ Philadelphia Eagles

It was an exciting way to start the weekend. With Green Bay traveling to Philadelphia for the first ever playoff matchup between these two historic franchises. Green Bay started off the first half really strong. By the end of the first quarter Brett Farve had helped build a nice 14-0 lead while the Eagles defense struggled to slow them down. The second quarter would be nicer to them though as Packers running back Ahmad Green went down with a devastating leg injury, thus making the Packer offense revovle around Farve for the rest of the game. Before too long the Eagles managed to stop the Packers for the first time and would begin to crawl back into the game by scoring their first TD of the game, thanks to Duce Staley diving into the endzone.

The second half would be a turning of the tides, with Green now out for the rest of the game, the Packers would struggle to keep up the pace they set in the first quarter and they would end up losing the lead, thanks to two picks from Farve. The Eagles made Green Bay pay for turning it over, making the score 17-14 in their favor as the third quarter ended. The Packers would wait until the fourth to score again but would leave too much time on the clock. In dramatic fashion Donovan McNabb would lead Philly down the field and would score a game winning TD pass to Freddie Mitchell to send them to the NFC Championship for the third straight year. The final score was 24-21.

Miami Dolphins @ Kansas City Chiefs

This game would also prove to be pretty exciting. Miami would get things started out fast with a quick score via a Ricky Willams 6 yard TD, but it would only be one upped when the Chiefs would tie things up thanks to Daunte Hall returning their kickoff all the way back to the house. The half would continue at a high pace and before too long the score was already 24-24, both teams hitting in a field goal and scoring a couple TDs along the way. Chiefs QB Trent Green would try to chuck one down field to score again before the half closed out but the ball would be picked off downfield closing out the half.

The second half would continue the high pace. Miami took the lead back with a close range field goal by Olindo Mare but the Chiefs would respond with a Priest Holmes touchdown. By the time the game was winding down, the Chiefs lead had inflated to 8 points and the score had doubled from what it was at half to a ridiculous 45-37. Miami would attempt to get down the field for a potential game tying score but would instead have their second turnover of the game when Williams would have the ball stripped from him as he came to the ground by Chiefs LB Shawn Barber. Kansas City would advance to the AFC Championship after a crazy 45-37 win over the Dolphins.

Around 3:45 PM, another report, this one from ESPN, says that the Lakers are nearing a deal that would send Shaq to the Bulls, but that turns out not to be. At 5:26 PM, it is announced that the Lakers have completed a trade. The deal sends Shaquille O’Neal to the Toronto Raptors for Vince Carter and a 2004 first round pick, as well as a 2006 second rounder.

NFL Divisional round: Part 2

Tennessee Titans @ Baltimore Ravens

Back in the 2000-01 NFL playoffs, these two met in this exact stage, with the Ravens beating the top seed Titans in Nashville on their way to winning Super Bowl XXXV. Would history repeat itself, or would Tennessee get redemption? It was quite the defensive battle early on, with neither team scoring in the first 20 minutes of the game. But as we got into the thick of the second, the Ravens jumped out to a 7-0 lead via a Jamal Lewis 16 yard TD run. But that was the last lead they had. Before half Tennssee would tie it at 7, but, on the first play of the second half they’d take the 14-7 lead when Steve McNair found Derrick Mason for a 75 yard touchdown. Baltimore would only manage a field goal in return. Tennessee would make it 21-7 early in the fourth and Baltimore, when faced with a dramatic 4th and 6 from midfield would fail to convert. Unfortunately for them, their defense wouldn't hold either and the Titans would knock 3 through to make it 24-7. A last ditch effort for the Ravens would come up with a score but it was too little too late, because as TE Todd Heap dove into the end zone for the score, the clock hit 0. The Ravens elected not to kick the extra point and so their season was over, upset by the Titans 24-13.

Minnesota Vikings @ St. Louis Rams

The last matchup of the weekend was definitely the least exciting between the Vikings and Rams. Daunte Culpepper would get off to a good start for the Vikings but would start to fall apart after an interception in the second quarter. St. Louis would pull away in the second half, taking the 10-7 halftime score and running it up to a final score of 30-17 as Mark Bulger would throw 2 touchdowns in the rout of the Vikings to send the Rams to their third NFC Championship in five years.

2003-04 AFC Championship
1/18/04 - Tennessee Titans @ Kansas City Chiefs

2003-04 NFC Championship
1/18/04 - Philadelphia Eagles @ St. Louis Rams

Wow! If my Chiefs win, it’s either an All-Missouri Super Bowl or the same matchup as the OTL Super Bowl this weekend!

Hey,i've been thinking about it...if the chargers re-sign Brees, then what do they do with Phillip Rivers? Does he get traded to the Saints? Like that, the Saints still draft Reggie Bush? If so, then who gets Eli and Big Ben? Cause remember, The giants wanted Big Ben initially...so what, Rivers to the saints, Big Ben to the giants and Eli to Pittsburgh?

Schilling extended, MLB in Charlotte, NFL firings
January 14, 2004: Curt Schilling agrees to a 3-year, $95 million contract extension with the Arizona Diamondbacks, ensuring his future in the desert.

January 15, 2004: A group of investors, led by NASCAR team owner Felix Sabates, approach the MLB about possibly moving the Montreal Expos or the Minnesota Twins to Charlotte, NC. The prospective team would play at an expanded Knights Stadium in suburban Fort Mill, SC until a new ballpark in the city can be built. As mentioned, the Expos are currently entertaining many bids to buy the team while the Twins cannot seem to convince the Minneapolis/St. Paul governments to build a new stadium, despite winning back-to-back AL Central titles in 2002 and 2003.

Also that day, the Raiders and Giants announce the firings of Bill Callahan and Jim Fassel from their respective head coaching jobs with the franchises. It is rumored that Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel could be interviewed by one or the other as a possible successor.

Even more big news coming from the fighting world of Japanese combat sports!

First, Pride Fighting Championships has officially announced the full card for the Total Elimination 2004 card, which will take place at the Saitama Super Arena on golden Week, on Sunday April 25th, 2004.

Along with the previously confirmed Middlewdight title match between champion Wanderlei Silva and challenger Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and the two no.1 contenders matches, (Mirko Cro Cop vs Kevin Randleman at heavyweight and Murillo Ninja Rua vs Ricardo Arona at middleweight), the card sees Pancrase Light Heavyweight champion yuki Kondo return to Pride as he faces the newcomer Mauricio Shogun Rua, Murillo Ninja's younger brother.

Igor Vovchanchyn returns from a woeful 2003 where the former grand prix winner and heavyweight king lost most of his fights, including losing to Mirko Cro Cop from a highlight reel left high kick knockout. The Ukrainian pain train hopes to start his 2004 on a positive note as he takes on former Russian soldier Sergei Kharitonov in the latter's 3rd Pride fight.

The match that the local japanese fans are most intrigued by, however, is the matchup pitting judo standout Kazuhiro Nakamura against Veteran Kiyoshi Tamura. Last year, Tamura lost to Nakamura's sensei Hidehiko Yoshida by submission, ending an impressive 4-fight winning streak. Nakamura, who has gradually improved his game amidst his baptism of fire in Pride, hopes to match his sensei by beating Tamura on his own accord.

Tamura ain't alone, however, for he brought with him former UFC and Pancrase Heavyweight champion Josh Barnett, who will make his Pride debut against another american in the division's resident gatekeeper, Heath Herring.

Finally, in the opening match, a battle between two big names in the Japanese minor leagues as Yushin Okami makes his Pride return after a 2-year absence taking on Deep MMA's Ryuta Sakurai, who makes his Pride debut on this card.

Or, hell, draft Larry Fitzgerald with the #1 pick. That would give Brees a good target to throw to...

Nassar fired
January 16th, 2004: Over the past week, several Olympic gymnasts and MSU athletes have come forward to allege sexual abuse by Larry Nassar, who was the US Olympics team doctor and a doctor at Michigan State University until his arrest on possession of child pornography on the 13th. The USOC announced in a press conference that Nassar was fired effective today; Michigan State had already done so on the 15th. This will be later seen as an attempt to get ahead of the growing Nassar scandal.

(If someone could help me here, I'd really appreciate it.)

Or, hell, draft Larry Fitzgerald with the #1 pick. That would give Brees a good target to throw to...

Chargers - Larry Fitzgerald
Raiders - CFF:LoM
Cardinals - Robert Gallery
Giants - Eli Manning
Name Redacteds - Sean Taylor
Browns - F'n Solja
Lions - Roy Williams
Failclowns - DeAngelo Hall
Jaguars - Reggie Williams
Texans -Dunta Robinson
Steelers - Phillip Rivers
...
Saints - JP Losman (be cool to see what Sean can do with him, also butterflies Will Smith being jn New Orleans).

Not saying it's canon but that would be somewhat of a change and would be fun.
