I thought the Rockies were in first place in the NL West.

I don't think the royals will agree for this, they're getting nothing in return for 2 top players

Beltran trade vetoed
May 20, 2004: Just hours following a proposed trade that would send Royals star Carlos Beltran to the Giants, the MLB and MLBPA vetoes the deal, saying that it the Royals were trying to “tank” their season and that the trade would make the Royals look like a “poor Triple-A” team. The Royals then announce that Beltran will “not be traded anytime soon.”

Lol.

Assorted MLB news
May 21st 2004: Despite the vetoed trade the Royals still expect Beltran to be dealt before or right around the trade deadline in July.

May 22nd 2004: A back to fully healthy Nomar Garciaparra and Ichiro help the Mariners dominate the American League as they seem neck and neck with the best record in the American League the Boston Red Sox (correct me if that’s wrong) with both players hitting as of now below .500 so far in the season.

May 23rd 2004: Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks pitches the 17th ever perfect game in MLB history against the Florida Marlins in a 1-0 victory after a Steve Finley solo home run in the 6th inning

Johnson at 40 years old is the oldest player to throw a perfect game in MLB history and oldest pitcher in National League history to throw a no hitter.

Johnson still is a gem (no pun intended) on one of the worst teams in baseball but he too is also another popular player that will be in trade deadline talks.

Yankee troubles, Phil Jackson may leave
May 24, 2004: Carlos Beltran hits for the cycle, including a walk off, three run triple as the Royals beat the Yankees 10-9 at Kauffman Stadium. After the game, Yankee outfielder Bernie Williams calls Mariano Rivera a “choker”, causing a large-scale argument to break out in the Yankee clubhouse as New York’s struggles continue, as the Yankees are now tied with KC for the worst record in the AL.

May 25, 2004: Rumors begin to swirl that Phil Jackson will not resign with the Lakers during the offseason and he could accept offers from other teams following the Lakers first round loss to Dallas in the first round of the NBA playoffs and Kobe Bryant’s rumored desire to have a more offensively minded head coach. Potential suitors for Jackson include a reunion with the Chicago Bulls, whom he was coach from 1989 to 1998, the Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks.

Champions League Final, Big East News
May 26, 2004: The Champions League Final is played between Porto and AC Milan. The game gets off to a hot start, with Deco scoring off a corner. However, Porto proceed to play an incredibly boring possession game, containing Milan. The only chance for AC Milan is wasted when Andrea Pirlo misses a tap-in. Porto are able to hold on and shock the world, beating AC Milan and raising the Champions League trophy.

May 27, 2004: The Big East announces that Marquette and DePaul will join the conference.

Torre might be out, NFL minicamp report, Beltran traded again
May 28th 2004: Rumors go around that Joe Torre will soon step down as the manager of the New York Yankees and retire due to the disastrous start of the Yankees season.

May 30th 2004: As the first month of NFL rookie camp comes to a end reports go around that the Patriots 1st round pick and hyped number 1 overall pick Eli Manning is the rookie quarterback that has looked the best time as a starter in New England might start right away while the Raiders 1st round pick Sean Taylor has looked like a pro who has been playing for the past several years at the Raiders rookie camp.

On the other side Jets 1st round pick Ben Roethlisberger has shown signs that he needs to improve on his passing game in the NFL while Bills 1st round pick Roy Williams needs work on catching deep passes.

May 31st 2004: The Chicago Cubs reportedly send a trade package to the Kansas City Royals to get Carlos Beltran and pitching prospect Zach Grenkie and which reportedly will send Kyle Farsworth, Corey Patterson and their top 2 prospects in their farm system Felix Pie and Angel Guzman in return to the Royals.

A better trade, plus I'm the one barring a emergency, teams should trade till July, to avoid tanking

Pride Fighting Championship
May 31st, 2004: during a press conference, Pride Fighting Championships CEO and Dream Stage Entertainement president Nobuyuki Sakakibara has announced the full card for Critical Countdown 2004, to be held on June 20th at Pride's home base, the Saitama Super Arena.

Aside from the previously confirmed matchups such as the Pride Heavyweight title fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Kevin Randleman, the Judo superfight between former olympic medalists Hidehiko Yoshida and Naoya Ogawa and Quinton Rampage Jackson vs Alistair Overeem, the card will also see former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett in his second Pride match, facing off against the Ukrainian Freight train Igor Vovchanchyn, while former heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira returns to in-ring action after a long period of inactivity, taking on young judo expert Hirotaka Yokoi.

Pancrase light heavyweight champion Yuki Kondo returns to the Pride FC ring after his win over Mario Sperry at Schockwave 2003. He will take on brazilian Evangelista Cyborg, a young fighter whose been making a name for himself back home in Brazil for Jungle Fight as well as british promotion Cage Rage.

Fedor won't be alone on this card, for his brother Alexander Emelianenko makes his Pride debut on the same card. The young russian will face the texas crazy horse Heath Herring in what looks to be a hefty test for him.

Sergei Kharitonov, who lost a unanimous decision to igor Vovchanchyn at Total Elimination 2004 earlier this year, looks to get back on the win column as he takes on japanese veteran Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, a 4th degree Judo black belt who has been competing since the early days of MMA in Japan.

Finally, in a battle of exciting, smaller grapplers, former UFC Welterweight champion and Pride favorite Carlos Newton hopes to grab a win after losing to Kazushi Sakuraba in their rematch at Bushido 2. He will take on another Welterweight GP participant in Ryo "the Shark" Chonan.

Can we go ahead and let them accept it?
Sorry but,

May 24, 2004: Once again, the MLBPA vetoes a possible Carlos Beltran trade by the Royals, still saying that “tanking” will not be tolerated. The league also fines the Royals $5 million for the aptemted trades. In the coming days, the trade saga is mocked by the likes of Saturday Night Live, Jay Leno, David Letterman, and various other late night programs.
