Popular two-term Republican Premier Todd Hanazawa declined to run or a third term in the
2127 Dacia premier election. The economy was humming along smoothly as unemployment and inflation hit 20 year lows. Relations with the Whaling Congress nations had normalized under Hanazawa. Hanazawa endorsed his Secretary of Defense Charlie Phelps as Premier. The environemtnalist faciton of the Republican Party was hesitant about backing Phelps--he'd argued several cases against environmental protection as Solicitor-General in the 2100s and he'd also taken a soft line against whalers as a colonial administrator in the South Seas. Phelps himself was unsure about running as Premier, but accepted the nomination at the urging of Hanazawa. Phelps selected Commonwealth Representative Joanne Sheridan as his running mate.
For the Democrats, Nora Huerta Bryant of Pensacola was the overwhelming favorite to win the nomination. Bryan had been the nominee for Premier in 2115 and 2119, but had declined to run in 2123. Hanazawa had been popular then, and after having campaigned almost continously from 2113 to 2119, she was tired and exhausted and didn't think a third run would be worth it. While Hanazawa and the Republicans were just as popular in 2127 as they had been in 2123, Bryant felt a civic duty and obligation to run. While the matter of energy credits and infrastructure wasn't as pressing in 2127 as it had been in 2115, Bryant still ran an energetic, populist campaign based on welfare expansion, segregation and job programs. She selected Olivia Pratt, the President of Jamestown College, as her running mate.
The election was an uphill battle for Bryant against Phelps. Hanazawa was extremely popular and campaigned hard for Phelps, who was an awkward and uncomfortable public speaker. Many analysts believed that people weren't voting for Phelps, but rather Hanazawa. Some of the fire and pep had been taken out of Bryant's platform and her campaign. In the end, Phelps managed to hold off Bryant and win what was widely believed to be a third term for the Hanazawa administration. Bryant did best amongst lower class fishermen along the east coast of Dacia, the same voters who'd supported her in 2115 and 2119, though her support was beginning to fade with them. Phelps was supported by the largely mercantile class of the western cities, by the clerks, shop owners and farmers who's businesses were driven by whaling and Republican tax breaks.
