Ares96,

Tiny Kox FTW. As a matter of fact that's probably already the porn parody's title...

I know a little (little) South African politics but will admit the first time I saw Tokyo Sexwale there my brain said, "so there's a cetacean alternative to tentacle porn? I am not surprised." Because apparently I'm twelve. Of course none of those beats the Manilla papers' headlines a few years back, about an offensive against the Moro Islands Liberation Front:

"Army Sends Troops, Rockets Into MILF Haven"

Nice, although I think Michelle wouldn't pick Clinton. She'd go for some white guy with previous experience in Washington. ;)

President Clinton's strong mandate at the beginning of his term lead to the president being given largely free reign by a Progressive-controlled Congress. Clinton pushed through minimum wage hikes, an increase in school and infrastructure spending and jobs bills. However, he also realized the danger of running too far to the left and therefore eased capital gains taxes, pushed for an increase in police funding in urban areas and reformed Social Security payments to compensate for the rising life expectancy.

In foreign policy, the president was very fortunate. Almost as he took office, the Supreme Soviet sacked Romanov and dissolved the Soviet Union, ending the Cold War after 50 long years. The battered ex-Soviet and ex-communist nations quickly agreed to offers of American financial support to prop up their shaky foundations, leading to pro-American leaders in many capitals in the immediate aftermath of the post-Soviet conflicts. America had become the sole superpower in the world.

The Republicans, hoping against hope that a strong candidate could get Clinton (whom a large segment of the conservative base had begun to hate with unforeseen zeal) booted out and restore the White House to Republican rule. With that in mind, they picked Arizona Senator John McCain, an Indochinese War hero and POW who frequently bucked the party establishment (a plus as the Republican brand had soured after the Reagan-Bush years). McCain initially wanted a joint Republican-Democratic ticket to challenge Clinton, but the political realities forced him to pick hardcore conservative Governor Newt Gingrich of Georgia as his running mate. The Democrats selected Oklahoma Governor David L. Boren as their nominee and Minnesota Congressman Dean Barkley got the nod as his vice-presidential candidate.

By mid-1996, the economy had clearly rebounded from the early-1990s recession and Clinton was riding high in the polls. McCain was making headway against "Slick Billy" until both he and Gingrich's past scandals were dragged into the light by the Progressive campaign team. McCain managed to largely shake the old scandals, but new ones of improper fund-raising by Gingrich during his last gubernatorial run sunk McCain's poll numbers.

Clinton inexplicably exceeded his previous record-breaking performance of four years previous, winning an astonishing 511 electoral votes. He would have had 512 if not for an elector from Washington D.C. abstaining to protest the district's non-voting rights in Congress.

A dumb little infobox based on the results of this online poll taken in 2009 showing who Americans felt was the most trusted newsman. Thankfully, Time managed to break the results down by state, so I thought I'd play this out as an actual election.

Stewart/Colbert manages to win a landslide victory, both in terms of the popular vote and the electoral college.

Popular two-term Republican Premier Todd Hanazawa declined to run or a third term in the 2127 Dacia premier election. The economy was humming along smoothly as unemployment and inflation hit 20 year lows. Relations with the Whaling Congress nations had normalized under Hanazawa. Hanazawa endorsed his Secretary of Defense Charlie Phelps as Premier. The environemtnalist faciton of the Republican Party was hesitant about backing Phelps--he'd argued several cases against environmental protection as Solicitor-General in the 2100s and he'd also taken a soft line against whalers as a colonial administrator in the South Seas. Phelps himself was unsure about running as Premier, but accepted the nomination at the urging of Hanazawa. Phelps selected Commonwealth Representative Joanne Sheridan as his running mate.

For the Democrats, Nora Huerta Bryant of Pensacola was the overwhelming favorite to win the nomination. Bryan had been the nominee for Premier in 2115 and 2119, but had declined to run in 2123. Hanazawa had been popular then, and after having campaigned almost continously from 2113 to 2119, she was tired and exhausted and didn't think a third run would be worth it. While Hanazawa and the Republicans were just as popular in 2127 as they had been in 2123, Bryant felt a civic duty and obligation to run. While the matter of energy credits and infrastructure wasn't as pressing in 2127 as it had been in 2115, Bryant still ran an energetic, populist campaign based on welfare expansion, segregation and job programs. She selected Olivia Pratt, the President of Jamestown College, as her running mate.

The election was an uphill battle for Bryant against Phelps. Hanazawa was extremely popular and campaigned hard for Phelps, who was an awkward and uncomfortable public speaker. Many analysts believed that people weren't voting for Phelps, but rather Hanazawa. Some of the fire and pep had been taken out of Bryant's platform and her campaign. In the end, Phelps managed to hold off Bryant and win what was widely believed to be a third term for the Hanazawa administration. Bryant did best amongst lower class fishermen along the east coast of Dacia, the same voters who'd supported her in 2115 and 2119, though her support was beginning to fade with them. Phelps was supported by the largely mercantile class of the western cities, by the clerks, shop owners and farmers who's businesses were driven by whaling and Republican tax breaks.
