Andrea Orlando (born 9 February 1969) is a North Italian politician serving as the 36th and current Prime Minister of the Northern Italian Republic since 24 October 2016. He previously served as Minister of the Interior (2014-2016) and Minister of Regional Affairs (2011-2014) during the Gori government. Orlando previously served as Prefect of Oltregiogo between 2004 and 2008 and as city councillor of La Spezia between 1995 and 2001. He briefly served as interim Secretary of the Socialist Party after the resignation of Piero Fassino and until the 2016 Congress, which elected Daniele Viotti as the new Secretary.
Orlando has been described as the first representative of the social democratic wing of the PODS to become Prime Minister since Claudio Martelli (1994-1997), after the more liberal cabinets of Giuliano Amato, Romano Prodi and Giorgio Gori. Orlando has been credied with being the first of a new generation of socialist leaders to reach the premiership. During his premiership, Orlando's government legalised same sex marriage and adoption rights, reformed the public administration and reformed the tax code, introducing a soda tax.

Daniele Viotti (born 8 March 1974) is a North Italian politician currently serving as the Secretary of the Worker's Democratic Socialist Party. He is also a member of parliament for the Alessandria district. Viotti had previously served as Minister of Justice (2014-2017) under Prime Ministers Giovanni Gori and Andrea Orlando and before that as mayor of Alessandria between 2010 and 2014.
Viotti is a noted LGBT rights' advocate, having chaired the Civil Liberties committee in the 2006-2011 legislature when same sex marriage legislation passed in parliament. During his time as Justice Minister, Viotti presided over the reform of the Penal and Civil Codes to equal the rights of heterosexual and homosexual couples regarding adoption proceedings and to expand the hate speech laws to include transphobic comments. Viotti is usually placed on the left-wing of the PODS, close to the current Prime Minister, Andrea Orlando, as has been identified as a member of the 'Young Turk' faction of the party, which played a key role in forcing Romano Prodi's resignation.
