If they are able to win states in the rust belt and not the Midwest, then surely that name is inaccurate?

I've always seen the Great Lakes region being the centre of the Midwest, but admittedly I'm a bit rusty when it comes to the exact definitions of US regions. I couldn't really think of a better name.

In my opinion the Midwest is everything west of states such as Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota and Missouri and east of the 3 western coastal states.

Although there is much discussion and dispute about what constitutes the American Midwest, this is definitely not correct.

Most people define the Midwest as the old Northwest Territory (Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois) plus Minnesota and Iowa. Others variously will include the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, and/or Missouri. Occasionally Kentucky is mentioned, but that's typically not accepted. Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee are definitely not in the Midwest, nor are Wyoming, Montana, or Colorado.

When people say the 'Upper Midwest', they usually mean Wisconsin and Minnesota, usually Iowa and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and sometimes the Dakotas. As far as I know, there is no such thing as the 'Lower Midwest'.

Midwest I’m pretty sure is Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and the Dakotas

Random sequel/spinoff idea I had to the SWP vs. Libertarian system thing I did a bit ago. This is now 1996.

Eric Flint (Socialist Workers' Party, WV): 274 EVs
L. Neil Smith (Libertarian, AZ): 261 EVs
Kim Stanley Robinson (Green Party, IL): 3 EVs

I thought Ontario outside Toronto was quite similar to the Midwest?

It's Canada. It's not the Midwest. There are some similarities with Ontario, sure, but the Midwest is an American thing.

Just like North Dakota is a lot like Saskatchewan, but you'd never call it a Prairie Province. And New Brunswick is not a part of New England.
