---- Hubert H. Humphrey/John Connally -- 440 -- 35,029,291 -- 47.86
---- Richard Nixon/Spiro Agnew -- 59 -- 29,316,604 -- 40.06
---- George Wallace/Curtis LeMay -- 39 -- 8,843,113 -- 12.08
Humphrey benefits from LBJ's Great Society legacy, supporting a truce in Vietnam (which brought out the Democratic vote), and winning over Wallace votes in the South with economic policies. Most of all, however, he benefits from the revelation that Richard Nixon sabotaged the Vietnam peace negotiations. This ruined Nixon's run, and set Nixon down in history first as a traitor, then on the list of people like Clay and William Jennings Bryan who have had multiple unsuccessful presidential campaigns. Nixon ultimately avoided charges, but retired from politics shortly afterwards at the urging of his wife. At least he
says he's retired, but it's only a matter of time before Nixon re-reawakens....
