At the urging of my wife, I'm going with my first idea.

FLAG CHALLENGE № 138: Homeland for the Holidays

Create a flag for a nation that has been taken over by the personification of a traditional or national holiday.

This would include things like Amu Nowruz, Santa Claus, and Stingy Jack, but would not include more modern personifications like the Great Pumpkin or Hanukkah Harry.

Because of the Holidays still on going for many, I'm going to extend the submission time from right out of the gate.

Round 139

Bantu_area.png

FLAG CHALLENGE № 139: Ajabu Alama (A Wonderful Symbol)

Create a flag for an ATL sovereign/independent country of an OTL or (at least slightly) ATL version of one of the many Bantu nations of subsaharan Africa. The country's flag can come from both a pre-colonial or post-colonial period.

A few notes:
- the ATL country can be somewhat based on an OTL one (Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, etc.), but has to have a different name and different borders
- OTL South Africa's infamous "bantustans" don't count as an example, it has to be a proper independent country of its own
- avoid
the pan-African tricolours if you can, they're boring and would be too parallelistic/anachronistic in most pre-20th century timelines
- please no ASB/fictional basis (e.g. Marvel Comics' Wakanda), keep it historical

Here's a little cheatsheet if you're not sure which Bantu ethnic/linguistic group to pick, etc.:
Bantu nationalities/peoples
OTL Bantu countries and lands
Bantu languages

thanks for the votes.

and now:

FLAG CHALLENGE № 140: Australians of many nations)

A fairly simple challenge, create a flag for an alt-Australia with a different ethnic majority then the current one (i.e. anglo-celtic).

A few notes:
- The alt-country can occupy part or all of the australian landmass but no more and if only part, should be "the" main country on it.
- the ethnic group can be a coloniser, a native group or the result of different migration pattern.
- please no overtly ASB countries

Just for completeness' sake, I'm quoting FlyingParafin's post concerning the latest challenge (for round 141), since he posted it in the other thread:

Uh... mmm... I've never won these contests before, but I can come up with something. I hope this isn't too similar to another flag contest, I know there's a rule about having a challenge to similar to the one right before it but I don't know about any other previous ones.
Anyway...
FLAG CHALLENGE № 141: In God we (don't) Trust

We know how much religion has an effect on national flags. Nations have had religious events influence them enough for it to become part of their people and, even today, have it in some form on their flags, some obvious and some not.

But what if flags didn't show religious imagery at all?

The Challenge: Create a more secular version of a flag which in our timeline has religious symbolism.

Try not to use any religious images at all. This includes, but isn't limited to: crosses, star and crescent, star of david, etc. and please don't make your flag too ASB-ish.

I would give an example, but it's against the rules as it's technically entering my own contest. Therefore, I can post an example in the regular flag thread later on today.

FLAG CHALLENGE № 142: Free State of Antwerp

At the London Conference of 1830, French diplomat Charles Maurice de Talleyrand proposed a partition of what is now Belgium, with the western element becoming the Free State of Antwerp, a British protectorate, and the remainder being annexed to France and the Netherlands.

The Challenge: Create a national flag and naval ensign for the Free State of Antwerp. An explanation of the thinking behind the flag would be appreciated. Try to avoid directly using any of the Belgian flags, though I appreciate some crossover may be inevitable.

Each flag is to be up to 300 px high. Remember that imgur.com provides free image hosting.

Flag Challenge no 143: Britishest Quebec

FLAG CHALLENGE № 143: Britishest Quebec

If you look at the flag of the province of quebec, it's pretty obvious that francophones are the predominant ethnic group among its population. What if for whether reasons that would have happened post 1840s, modern days quebeckers were predominantly anglophones ?

The Challenge: Create a alternate provincial flag for a canadian province of Quebec that represent the fact that francophones are, at best, a small minority.

EDIT: my winning entry for WFC 143
The Professor said:
The Province of Saint Laurence
With the adoption of the Maple Ensign as the Canadian Confederation’s national flag, the public’s attention was drawn to those of the provinces.
The Province of Saint-Laurence, formerly Canada East or Quebec, in particular had a highly vocal discussion involving its Francophone minority who were strongly against overt Anglophone symbols and so an ensign with the SL arms was rejected.
Variants based on the arms themselves were debated and with both French fleurdelys and English leopards rejected the most acceptable flag involved the maple leaf emblems.
Eventually a flag with 3 joined maple leaves in green on gold was agreed upon, symbolically reflecting the Francophone, Anglophone, and Native peoples working together

And the winner is...

Mongolian Fascist Union (Монгол фашист холбоо)
In this ATL, Mongolia doesn't become part of OTL USSR. In fact, this new empire is an attempt to bring back the old Mongol Empire from the 13th and 14th centuries. The capital of this new Mongolia is in a rebuilt Karakorum, taken by force sometime during WW1 or WW2 during the Fascist' union's early days.

Being a neo pagan country like early Nazi Germany, it would have tried to eradicate religions like Islam or Buddhism in place of Tengriism as the government sought to bring back the old culture and customs set during the old Mongol Empire's lifespan. Ironically, this empire is much, MUCH less tolerant of other religions unlike the 'neutral' stance taken by the old empire.

It held territory previously claimed by OTL China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The Fascist Union's fate is undecided, but it probably would have lasted until the end of WW2 like most fascist empires then. Mongolia's fate after that is undecided as well, it probably would have become communist before the USSR fell apart like in OTL or it could be occupied by the US (again, like in OTL in post-WW2 Japan) before being liberated into a different Mongolia that would last to this day.

FLAG CHALLENGE #145: The freer The Market, the freer The People

Ah, those wacky Alien Space Bats, always screwing up the timeline one way or another! This time, they've turned the ideologies in OTL completely upside down, resulting in capitalist dictatorships posing as "People's" "Republics" while the free world consists of socialist democracies.

In this challenge, you have to come up with either:
A capitalist flag of an OTL communist country (e.g. Cuba, China, etc.)
A socialist flag of an OTL capitalist country (Japan, USA, etc.)

The winner for Flag Challenge 146 is @FlyingParafin!

The Dark Lord's People's Movement
dMSzVIw.png

For years after the second great flood, those evil despots and their petty superstitions of Satan's great power have oppressed us and forced their false god on us. Because we know better of their evil attempts at brainwashing the masses, we (the people) will kill all who stand in our path at making a state dedicated to the dark lord!

For a more factual explanation, global warming goes unchecked and completely melts all large patches of ice and snow on earth, leaving sea levels considerably higher than in OTL. Many, many years have passed (possibly hundreds or thousands) since this catastrophe and societies are considerably more zealous seeing as people have lost faith in their governments and instead have put their trust in religion.

Because of this, the lines have blurred between secular and religious ideologies, making ordinary people and reborn nations left after these floods superstitious of revolutionary movements because they may overthrow any theocracy in place, which are surprisingly common after the apocalypse in this timeline.

Being secular ideologies, the lines between socialism/communism and cults against organized religion (satanism, paganism, etc.) have also been blurred, leaving people that would associate themselves with socialist movements in OTL as satanists and anti-christians.

Wow, how ASBish. XD

Well, looks like I won the challenge. Here's the new one:

FLAG CHALLENGE #147: Revolutionary Colours
Tricolour flags are, simply put, flags with triband designs used for symbolizing things like liberty, revolution, democracy or republicanism in general. Many flags use this design in OTL, e.g. Ireland, France, India, etc.

In this challenge, you have to come up with a tricolour flag of a nation that in OTL doesn't have one, e.g. Japan, The UK, USA, etc.
No other designs are allowed in this contest. However, general triband designs (horizontal, vertical, uneven, etc.) can be entered.

Other Rules:
Yes, you may use seals and other symbols in your tricolours if you want. ATL countries can be entered with explanation and justification, (e.g. stating which nation in OTL this new country would replace, etc.) just don't go too ASB with them.
