It turns out that the New Capitalist measures to keep industry local and nationalist, while good for industrial unionism and class equality, were very, very bad for the environment. Before it split into warring factions, the United Nations decided on drastic measures to address the crisis of late People’s Capitalism. For the United States, this meant a near-total (but entirely voluntary) evacuation of Hawaii and Alaska, bumping the number of states back to 48, offering full subsidies for moving costs and a healthy tax rebate for the rest of an evacuee’s natural life. The states were then seeded up with carbon-negative genetically-engineered SynthEnvironments, patented products of General Cooperatives.
Not everyone took the offer, of course, and around a hundred thousand people stayed behind in Alaska. Whilst Hawaii eventually mostly unified into the reformed Kingdom under extremely nominal American sovereignty, Alaska split apart into different communities. Environmental regulations meant contact with the outside world was sporadic at best, as the Canadian border was totally sealed, the Soviet Union had depopulated Siberia in a similar though significantly less voluntary manner, and there was an annual quota for ships approaching Alaska so as to not add nuclear toxins to the off-coast underwater SynthEnvironments. The increasing regularity of trade route-sealing superstorms didn’t help matters.
A century on, Alaska was nearly unrecognizable. The scattered communities of the former northern Boroughs were often outright tribal in technology, if not in governance. The only contact the American government afforded these northern tribes were raids and incursions on tribes that broke the last two laws of Alaska: no slavery or human sacrifice allowed. A few juvenile bands composed of runaway slaves even began to worship the paratrooper WAVE squadrons who would eliminate slave traders with extreme prejudice as “valkyrie-liberators” from the gods.
Yes, gods, not God, as these SynthEnvironments are places where it seems the Great Christian Decline of the latter 21st century never ended. Many in these places do not even know of the reunification of the church, or even who Jesus was. Paganism, irreligion, or other peculiarities are common here.
The shining beacon of Alaskan civilization, such that it could be called, was of course the southern Aleskan Sundom. In the rebuilt cities of the coast, a society of Sun-worshippers carried on with an eclectic mix of bronze-age agriculture, nineteenth century morals and firearms, and the occasional modern flak cannon. The Sun-Governors of Anchorage Town proclaimed their domain the legal continuator of the old State of Alaska, a proclamation Washington carefully avoided taking a side on. Certainly the Sundom sent no Senators to the Estates General.
As the War of Unian Succession began, Guido G saw the SynthEnvironments as the perfect, defenseless conquest for Atlantis. Plenty of savages to enslave, no modern opposition, and an opportune springboard for further conquests. And so Atlantis made the long journey from Europe to the North Pacific, past loyal La Plata, through the friendly straits of Magellan and avoiding the Progressive Panama Canal. But by then, both Washington and Moscow had cottoned to Atlantian designs. Atlantis found no refuge in Hawai’i, the King welcoming in an American fleet which beat back the Ghandites. The Soviet satrapy of Sakhalin was similarly prepared. But Atlantis had succeeded in exhausting American forces, and Washington could spare only material and token womanpower for the Aleskans.
Atlantis’ first raid was foiled by the Sundom’s preserved flak cannons. Landing parties of UN WAVES were halted by Sundom troops using American equipment. Unian bombing did take care of the flak cannons. The next morning, Atlantis tried another pass, but Soviet WAVES had been flown into American territory overnight. Washington had decided that friendly foreigners on American soil were preferable to enemy occupation. Atlantis did not capture a single Sundom slave, and the city itself returned to sea.
Unfortunately for Alaska, Atlantian capture barges would have more luck upstate.

McCain the Maverick, McCain the Democrat

In 2002, following the midterm elections, Senator John McCain, who'd been actively courted by the Democrats, announced he'd follow in the footsteps of Jim Jeffords and became a Democrat. Nationally, the reaction to this was relatively positive. Among Republicans, McCain was ostracized.

2004

In 2004, conservative J.D. Hayworth won the Republican primary unopposed while McCain fended off a weak challenge from liberal activist and schoolteacher Stu Starky to win the Democratic nomination. At first, Hayworth led the polls but McCain touted his moderation and maverick-ness to win a 4 percent victory in 2004.

In 2008, McCain entered the Democratic race for President. However, most liberal partisans did not yet trust the Arizona Senator and he came in third behind Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Clinton went on to win a landslide against the GOP ticket that fall, which consisted of Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Indiana Congressman Mike Pence. McCain strongly supported Clinton.

2010

In 2010, McCain, who had been pushed substantially to the left by his 2008 campaign, was hoping to avoid a primary challenger. However, the Mayor of Nogales, Marco Lopez ran against McCain, calling for "consistent liberalism." McCain won by ten points against the underfunded Lopez. The GOP nominated the Mayor of Mesa, Scott Smith, who ran an underfunded campaign. He ended up losing badly to McCain, a bright spot for the Democrats in a terrible year for them.

In 2012, President Clinton was defeated by the moderate ticket of Michael Bloomberg and Charlie Crist. These were McCain's type of politicians, and he slowly began to sway back towards the right to support the President. This enraged liberals.

2016

In 2016, liberals and progressives once again fielded Marco Lopez, but this time enlisting the support of progressive Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich. With liberal anger behind Lopez, and with the support of Kucinich, Lopez defeated McCain in the primary, setting up a fight between him and popular GOP representative Ben Quayle. However, McCain would not be deterred. He entered the race as an independent. The polls bounced back and forth, with McCain taking mainly the moderate vote and some Democrats' votes, as many establishment Democrats supported him. Polls indicated he would lose until President Bloomberg endorsed McCain shortly before the election.

*sorry about the lack of percentages in the 2010 box, but it was 57 for McCain and 39 for Smith

Not to devolve into current politics too much, but did Bloomberg/Crist win as a Republican or as an Independent?

Tony O'Hara (born November 6, 1951) is an American politician and the United States Senator from New Jersey.

I find myself both fascinated and frightened in possibly meeting him as an Alumni. Poli Sci was my minor, and did take it fairly seriously back then (despite the cynicism I was earning in the process). I doubt his influence or experiences would have pushed that to a double major on my part, but would have been insightful regardless.

The Insanity train is still running at full steam ahead, even to places outside earth.

If you've ever watched the Martian, you've learned that colonizing mars requires shit and potatoes, so...

The Sol needs more human settlements.

Ethiopia was fortunate. It has always strived and prospered, ever since it came to exist as an unified state.

As human civilization stretched itself unto space and Africa grew stronger and stronger, Ethiopia joined the rest of the world in settlement of the planets of the Solar System. Ethiopian settlements at Mars and Venus grew with surprising speed, even as their settlers often died while facing the harsh nature of these planets. And now, the capital of Ethiopia's Martian domains, Le'idili Kokebi, the Star of Fortune, is a megapolis boasts almost four million people, being one of the biggest cities in Ethiopia. While the citizens of Le'idili Kokebi have their own cultural quirks, they are truly patriotic citizens of Ethiopia and, as such, tend not to be shaken by secessionist, pan-Martian sentiments that often shake other colonies surrounding it.

As of currently, the city's Mayor is one Mulualem Gebriael Paulos, a lawyer and the member of the African Renaissance ~ Democratic All-Ethiopian Alliance party.

The Olympus Temple Complex at Mianzhu is a quaint, beautiful place, and a holy site for many Buddhists on Mars. While somewhat lower on the mountain compared to the many, many other temples of Olympus Mons, and not as tall as the Mahaantaavar Temple or as vast and luminous as the Lanyuan and the Narmangala Temple Complexes, it is great, and was the foundation for human exploration of Olympus Mons. It was the foundation of the current city of Mianzhu, and for many people it symbolizes the hardship and perseverance of the first settlers and mountaineers of Olympus Mons. Even today, the old Temple Complex at Mianzhu gets thousands of visitors, and is protected from possible destruction.

What is it? Have you figured out the changes? please tell us
In New Zealand there's this song called Poi E that was a four-week chart-topper back in the 1980's, and since it's become synonymous with our cultural 'image' (or 'Kiwiana' as it's sometimes referred to as), along with rugby, Footrot Flats, Marmite, pavlova, etcetera. Not only is it representative of our indigenous Maori culture, it's also pretty catchy. It'd make a much better national anthem than the one we have now, IMHO.

Other than that there are literally no other changes. Not even a incumbent Green government. Tsk.
