Hungary

Central European country, for many centuries the core part of the Kingdom of Hungary (along with modern day Slovakia). It first became a republic for a short while in 1848-1849, then led the east constituent part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy between 1867 and 1918, underwent a series of republican revolutions in 1918-1920, became a monarchy (of sorts) again until 1945. After WWII, it became a satellite republic of the former USSR and a Warsaw Pact member state and turned to democracy after political and societal changes in 1988-1989.

Borders Serbia to the south, Slovenia and Croatia to the southwest, Austria to the west, Slovakia to the north, Ukraine to the northeast and Romania to the east and southeast.

Alternate history clichés involving this country

Among AH.com map makers at least, there was a certain cliché analogous to “The Inevitable Kingdom of Burgundy” several years ago, called (what else ?) “The Inevitable Kingdom of Hungary”. This is when Hungary appears exactly the same in medieval maps, even though the TL's POD is far reaching enough to cause massive butterflies concerning its territory or its political status in Europe, etc.
