So for example the headlines of victories and casualties in Italian Libya are just a smoke screen for defeat and heavy losses.

    To Supervisor Martin,

Another interesting subject/Capsule Universe (CU) coming from the Multiversal Democratic Forum (MDF). As a matter of fact this CU is a combined work of the MDF, the Pangerman Multiverse Assembly and the All-Russia Multiverse Union. Cooperation between all the Multiverse entities has been ramping up recently – some contribute this rise to increased “interdimensionalization” of the Multiverse.

So without further ado, I represent you a world where the Spring of Nations, the revolutions of 1848 succeeded beyond the dreams of its instigators.

    ### Start of summary ###
    • The Revolution of 1848 overthrew the royal families of the German Confederation, Austria and Italy. Establishing a republican government in each of these former states and in Austria’s case giving independence to Hungary. The rest of Austria and the states of the German Confederation merged into Greater Germany. How this came to pass? With Russia busy putting down a Polish revolt, serf rebellions and famine it couldn’t help its Imperial allies in the Holy League. A harsher famine in central Europe also helped to stoke resentment against the monarchies who totally botched the relief supplies to the starving masses.
    • With a democratic neighbor Russia struggled more with revolutionary sentiments amongst its lower masses. Domestic revolts, strikes and pogroms prompted the old Tsar to go to war with their republican neighbors. The unpopular war nearly proved to be the end for Imperial Russia. But a coup by his more democratic-minded cousin did saved the Romanov dynasty at the eleventh hour. Peace was quickly declared, Poland was granted independence and democratic reforms started. Beginning with the 20th century the former enemies of Germany and Russia have slowly approached each other and thus turned into close allies by the end of the last century.
    • The approachment of Germany and Russia wouldn’t have happened if Italy hasn’t suffered its own coup. But unlike the Russian one – Italy underwent a reactionary, semi-fascist coup by a former general in the first decade of the 20th century. Rome quickly turned to Imperial France and left its former allies behind. This was a tremendous shock in Berlin, Warsaw and Budapest.
    • France did contemplate intervening in the war between Germany and Russia, but decided to sit it out. This proved to be a blessing and a curse. Napoleon III and his successors could solidify his dynasty in France and enlarge the French Empire in Africa. French influence in its former colonies is still felt to this day.
    • British working classes did draw inspiration from the revolutions on the continent. But the establishment crackdown has stifled revolutionary activity on the British Isles. Increased censorship over the decades, coupled with more and more brutal repressions against the working class in Britain and its colonies have turned the workers of the former British Empire to more radical ideologies. The spark that would spell the end of the British Empire was ignited by the British coal mine strikes of 1925. Overnight the British Empire transformed into the Federation of Workers Republics (FWR). The Royal family escaped to Canada, who along with South Africa and Australasia was the only part of the Empire who didn’t go red. Today London is still the capital of the FWR, but the most important decisions are decided in New Delhi and Lagos. (Authors note: This has been heavily inspired by Ed Thomas Fight and be Right Universe).
    • China also underwent a Meji reform which in turn morphed into a democratic reform in the middle part of the 20th century. It still has an emperor and the average Chinese is wealthier and more satisfied than OTL. The democratic constitutional empire is expected to be the next leader of the Axis.
    • The Axis is the world largest alliance – it is made up of Russia, China, Germany, Korea and Mitteleuropa states. With over two billion people the Axis has tremendous influence over international policy.
    • With no Forty-Eighters and less immigration from Central Europe, the US struggled in the American Civil War (ACW). While not war-winning the absence of democratic-union minded immigrants did contribute to Union defeat in the ACW. After the end of the Civil War the North turned increasing isolationist, which continued to this day. The US is the only country in the world which is not part of any international organization.
    • The only part of the world in which Philadelphia have interest in is in the former states of the CSA. The Confederate States survived for a couple of decades, but state-rightists, rivalries and corruption broke the CSA apart by the end of the 19th century. Repression of their black population has turned the American South into a brutal war zone that would make OTL Vietnam blush with shame. ( Authors note: This has been heavily inspired by Mark Ciccone novel – Red Delta)

    To Supervisor Martin,

So I have been given the task to catalogue the late quadrillionaire Mr. Harlan inheritance. He made his wealth selling various cultural goods among various parts of the multiverse.
In his long live he’d built a vast collection of artifacts and treasures from large parts of the multiverse. Among his properties are multiple Capsule universes, which he would create with the approval of us or other multiverse organization.
It would take some time to work my way through all his collection and since Mr. Harlan has no relatives. All the Capsule Universes are to be given into the custody of their respective true universes – if they are multiverse aware – or their respective multiverse organization – if they are not aware.

So without further ado, I represent you the first of late Mr. Harlan capsule universes, he labeled it as – 2020 a Word with no world wars.

    ### Start of summary ###
    • Franz Ferdinand did not go to Sarajevo in 1914 and did not get assassinated. Following Emperor Franz Josephs death in 1916 Franz Ferdinand began to implement his reforms for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It would take his whole reign but in the last years of his reign as Emperor Franz Ferdinand finally succeeded in transforming an ailing empire into a modern state where every (well almost every) minority group has a say in the state. Today the United Austrian Empire or the United States of Austria is a modern European state but still the wingman of Berlin.
    • Russia modernized in rapid pace and began to flex its muscles in oversea areas. It was through St. Petersburg (and London) machinations that the Ottoman Empire finally collapsed by 1919. It gained territories in eastern Anatolia up to what would now be called the State of Kurdistan and made Istanbul/Constantinople an independent Free City.
    • But the rapid pace of Russian industrialization and modernization only benefited the elite and resentment started to build among the poor and the working class. All of this bend up anger erupted in the Russian Revolution of 1930 where the Imperial family was overthrown, Poland, Finland and the Caucasus states gained their independence and the Russian people finally gained a representative democracy in the form of the Russian Republic.
    • European colonial empires benefited somewhat from a prolonged European influence. Populations are lower and prosperity higher in the respective countries. Although most African and Asian colonies haven’t shaken off all European influence and Europe still retains territories in Africa and the Americas.
    • Great power rivalry underwent three phases since the start of the 20th century. The first phase was from the 1900 until 1930 and was characterized by mostly direct confrontation between the powers (mostly in Africa, Asia but also in Europe). The Russian Revolution in 1930 but an end to the first phase and lead to a period of détente between the powers. By the time when their colonies started to gain independence (mostly in the late 1960s until early 1980s) the rivalry restarted, but direct confrontation was replaced by confrontation between their former colonies. Bush warfare and replacement wars became common and were supported by their respective “mother” countries, mostly with arms and supplies and sometimes with direct troop contribution.
    • The third phase of great power rivalry started in the early 2010s and is characterized by the addition of new non-European players. India began to assert itself in the Imperial Federation, which begins to unnerve policymakers in London, Ottowa, Canberra and Pretoria. Adding to London’s headache is that Canberra is increasingly taking over operations in Asia and the Pacific and that Pretoria still pursues its apartheid policies.
    • China is emerging from its lost century and is beginning to make sounds about Manchuria, Tibet and Sinkiang which hasn’t amused Moscow, New Delhi and Tokyo. Japan the only non-European power is worried that China, with whom it had a ten year war, is hell bent on revenge for all the sorrow Japanese troops had inflicted on China eighty years ago.
    • America is a great power, in fact it is the largest economic power of the world, but it hasn’t used its power outside of the Americas. America is noted as a benign, isolationist and liberal country. Other great powers often laughed at the small American military (they only maintain a 70.000 men large military – mostly in the navy), but behind their façade they fear American economic power – and Washington knows this.
    • That is not to say that America hasn’t experienced conflict. But by and large it has survived these and built a better union because of them. The American Labor movement is the largest in the world, its civil rights movement is a role model for the still oppressed colonial peoples, American women and minority rights groups (such as LGTBQs, ACLU) have achieved successes that are an inspiration for other similar groups in the world. And it is because of all of them that the average American enjoy free healthcare, free maternity leave, unemployment benefits, marriage rights, 38hour working week and other social and economic rights.
    • Technology level is about the same as OTL 2020. More advanced in medicines, biology and related tech sectors and less advanced in mobile and digital technology (late 2000s / early 2010s tech – flip phones are still a thing). The first moon landing happened in the early 1990s by Germany, quickly followed by the Brits and Russians. The Americans were the fourth power to land on the moon in the late 1990s.

    ### Incoming transmission ###

    To Supervisor Martin,

Since the start of my task to catalogue the late Mr. Harlan collection of capsule universes, I have discovered many interesting worlds. It also seems that Mr. Harlan also has a special hobby of self-inserting himself into
historical persons of old earth. Now self-Insertion, manipulating events in the past, time-travels, ISOTs-copies are nothing new and are being used by the multiverse great powers (of which there are to many to count) to bolster their faction in the assembly. Also the rich and powerful are using the same methods to project their influence, gain more power and/or are doing all those time-changing things out of sheer boredom. Now whereas most of the time-changing-time-influencing-historical-interference results in more or less the ending which the powers desired - be it making xyz-country great(er), advancing a nations technology or wining an unwinnable war.
This is where the collection of Mr. Harlan gets interesting. His mostly hands-off approach to many of his little universes (I want to mention that most of the other self-inserts, timetravel etc. are not made using the "capsule universe" method rather they are made in "normal" parallel universes) has resulted in a diverse range of worlds. But this one stood out for me. For its sheer boredom. It seems that Mr. Harlan inserted himself into the early mind of a European potentate - nothing unusual since countless others did the same thing - and rather doing something extraordinaire did nothing. Well he rather enjoyed his 97years (the time he spent in the universe) to enjoy himself - collecting riches (and making his designated country rich), eating good food and wine and very often enjoy the companies of young ladies. Oh he prevented a large war, sold off lots of land (which he didn't owned to begin with...) and made a strong economic and political alliance. But that was it. Nothing more.
So dear Supervisor may I present to you the world of Mr. Harlan - The Kaiser!.

    Synth-1234

    ### End transmission ###

    ### Start of summary ###
    • Mr. Harlan isoted himself into the minds of crown prince Wilhelm (the future German emperor Wilhelm II) and with future knowledge avoided a breech birth. His childhood was more or less uneventful. He was still strictly taught by Hinzpeter but enjoyed riding. He still grew apart from his parents ideals but doesn't have the fractured relationship with his mother. As crown prince he rather enjoyed his teenage and young adult years. Wilhelm remained unmarried by the time of his ascension to the German throne in 1888.
    • Rather than dismissing Bismarck the Kaiser let the old chancellor stay at his post until his retirement in late 1897. The Kaiser then appointed Bismarck son - Herbert as chancellor. By this time the old alliance web that the senior Bismarck has created was beginning to unravel. The Kaiser had to choose between an alliance with Austria-Hungary or Russia. He chose Russia.
    • With Bismarck backing the Kaiser took a step back from colonial adventures. With Britain he concluded the London Conference of 1890 which effectively seeded control of Samoa, Wituland, Togo and other colonial holdings to London. The Kaiser famously said that he wanted as many colonies as he had fingers on his left hand. By the turn of the century Germany had four colonies - German West Africa (aka. Cameroon), German East Africa (aka. Tanganyika), Southwest Africa and North Papua. A fifth colony has yet to be found or aquired.
    • The Kaiser (Mr. Harlan) together with Russia were developing plans to divide Europe into their respective spheres. The Kaiser knew that a small war had to be fought and Russia satisfied so that peace and prosperity (in Germany and western Europe) can happen. His target to achieve this goal was Austria-Hungary. The nation would be dividedaccording to the secret Peterburg protocol, later known as the Leithania Agreement of 1909. The agreement seeks to divide the Danube monarchy along its Austrian and Hungarian parts. With the Austrian parts (minus Galicia-Lodmeria and Dalmatia) going to Germany and the Hungarian parts to Russia and Serbia.
    • In 1914 just like Mr. Harlan aka. the Kaiser knew, war was started by the assassination of the Austrian crown prince. Germany moved quickly occupying the Austrian alpine provinces in a matter of weeks (thanks in part due to Mr. Harlan exquisite knowledge of future military tactics and tech), Russia slogged through Galicia and Serbia through Bosnia.
    • France did joined Austria in its fight against Germany, Russia and Serbia but it lost hundreds of thousands of men against the German defensive lines in Alsace, achieving little than a few kilometres of advances. Britain meanwhile through careful political moves by the Kaiser remained neutral and aloof.
    • Despite putting up a great resistance Austria Hungary collapsed in autumn of 1915, leaving France alone. In the summer of 1916 after losing more than two million men on the slopes of Vosges mountain, the French army mutinied a week later the government was toppled and the new French government sued for peace.
    • The Conference of Potsdam in 1916 permanently divided Europe into two spheres a Russian East and a German West. Austria-Hungary was carved up by the two continental powers - Galica, Lodmeria and Bukovina to Russia, Croatia, Bosnia and the Dalmatian coast to Serbia (know Yugoslavia), Italy which only opportunistically joined late in the war got only the Austrian Istrian province, Romania which didn't joined but still demanded Hungarian territories got nothing. Russia and Germany decided to keep the main Hungarian lands intact - as a sort of neutral, demilitarised country between their respective spheres. Germany didn't annexed the remaining Austrian provinces but rather set up a puppet state - the Austrian Kingdom - out of Austria, Bohemia and the Slovenes land. As a puppet king it selected Maximilian von Hohenberg, the son of the late Austrian crown prince. It also gained its fifth colony - Morocco - from France (along with a sizeable war reparation).
    • So history happens Germany and Russia after a period of close cooperation grew apart from each other. Germany set up a common market for west European nations, which would later be reformed into the West European Union - consisting of twelve nations - Austria, Belgium, Italy, France, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Germany. Russia after its victory in the west concentrated its gaze to Asia and the rising power of Japan. Their rivalry over China would culminate in the Great Asian War of the 1940s. Japan and its collaborators would after many long and bloody years be kicked out of mainland Asia. Russia would carve out East Asia but not without meeting resistance from a new rising power the United States.
    • Russia and the US would enter into a great game in East Asia which still last to this day. Evidence of this are the divided states of China - a more or less Russian aligned North China and a US aligned South China.
    • Britain having fought no war but maintaining a global empire started to feel the strain. Many prime ministers succeeded only to apply small bandages to it but all started to unravel in the 1980s Britain went into its second Anarchy and the British Empire was no more.
    • The world of 2020 is divided into three camps - a Russian Sphere (although it influence started to wane - it has slipped its grip on North China and lost many influence in Eastern Europe), an American Sphere and a German/West European Sphere (Germany alone cannot maintain a Superpower status but with the backing of the W.E.U. with its 364 million citizens it can still wield considerable influence on the world stage).

    ### End of summary ###

Authors note: Welcome to the start of the fifth map/infobox series of Timelines of the Capsule Universes or TLCU. This is sort of an idea I had for a very long time - what would or could I do if I were self-inserted into Kaiser Willys mind? Would I be able to stop a war? Be as megalomaniac as the real Kaiser or just simply enjoy myself as a young dandy crown prince? I think I would have really enjoyed myself
    :)
    - I would have travelled a lot, enjoyed the companies of many ladies, invested in new technologies/markets or spurned their development when I can and tried my damn best to avoid a war - or just limiting it to one or two regions in Europe - thus my thinking of allying with Russia rather than the dead-weight Austria, sucking up to Britain and the US (no High Sea Fleet, less colonies etc.). And in the end maybe creating a better starting point for the 20th century?! And also get filthy rich or richer as the Kaiser. So what would you have done as the German Kaiser?
