Heres a take of mine on how the Pacific works
The Pacific would operate as a Federation with each group of islands. My guess at which groups, they would be:
The Caroline Islands [Palau, Micronesia, Marshall Islands],
The Solomon Islands,
New Hebrides [Vanuatu],
New Selesia [New Caledonia],
Fiji,
Tonga,
Walis&Futuna,
Samoa,
Tokelau,
Niue,
Rarotonga [The Cook Islands],
Gilbert & Ellis Islands,
Phoenix & Line Islands,
Tahiti,
Marquesas & Tuamotus,
Bora Bora [French Polynesia was split up when it got taken over by Germany at the request of the western islands],
Hawaii
The Pitcairn Islands.
18 Island Groups in Total, Maybe called Districts or Provinces. I'm gonna call them provinces for now.
Capital: Suva [being more central than the more obvious choice Honolulu it would probably be the favourite for the Provinces nearer to Fiji which happens to be the majority]
Official Languages: S***loads, recognised European languages maybe German, French and English but the islands would have multiple legal languages.
The Parliament would consist of an Upper & Lower house with a Prime Minister being the leader of the majority coalition in parliament. The members of the upper house are elected by the provincial local government, selecting two each when the previous member's mandate of 5 years expires. The Upper house selects a president by majority vote. The President is required to give up their political party registration upon being elected to keep them non-partisan
Political Parties of the Pacific:
Lower House (National Members Assembly), 90 seats
Upper House (Senate), 36 seats
Christan Democratic Party 30/90 Seats,15/36 Seats
Centre-Right, Christian Conservatism
Current Ruling Party since 2016. Has been a major party since the Pacific formed in the early 60s. Has always based policy around Christian values, although has softened recently on the issues allowing same-sex cohabitation to be passed in 2017.
Peoples Democratic Party 25/90 Seats,18/36 Seats
Centre to Centre-Left, Liberal Christianity, Neoliberalism
Party in Opposition. The current president's former party affiliation belonged to the PDP. The merger of the historical economically Left Peoples party and Liberal Democratic party. Socially Centrist to Right and economically Left. Has issues garnering support among the younger and older generation supporters are mostly middle aged centrists.
Peace and Love 13/90 Seats, 4/36 Seats
Left to Left Wing, Social Progressivism, Secularlisim, Social Democracy
Party in Opposition. Founded in the 1960s as part of the Hippie movement as a more left-wing alternative to the Democratic and Peoples party. Experienced a resurgence in the 1990s as the PDP moved to the centre. Popular among young people and older people formerly part of the small pacific hippie movement.
Ecological Heritage Party 8/90 Seats,0/36 Seats
Green Politics, Big Tent
Currently on the Crossbench in parliament. Only definitive policies are pro-environmentalism. Is popular among environmentally conscious Pacific cultures. Support is required often to pass government policy
Pacific Nationalist Party 8/90 Seats,5/36 Seats
Right-Wing, Christan Nationalism
Government Partner. Pretty self-explanatory. Popular among older and younger traditional voters.
One Pacific Party 6/90 Seats
Right-Wing, Protectionist, Right-Wing populism
The Pacifics answer to crazy right-wing populist movements across the world. Has a bad reputation but the CDP was required to form a coalition with them to even form a minority government of 44 seats. Has ended up dragging the CDPs popularity down with them. the largest voice against cooperation with Europe and nearby nations. Soaks up uncomfortable amounts of the younger hardline Christian vote, can be put down to charismatic in touch young leader.
