The Yankee Dominion: A Map and World Building Project

Heres a take of mine on how the Pacific works

The Pacific would operate as a Federation with each group of islands. My guess at which groups, they would be:
The Caroline Islands [Palau, Micronesia, Marshall Islands],
The Solomon Islands,
New Hebrides [Vanuatu],
New Selesia [New Caledonia],
Fiji,
Tonga,
Walis&Futuna,
Samoa,
Tokelau,
Niue,
Rarotonga [The Cook Islands],
Gilbert & Ellis Islands,
Phoenix & Line Islands,
Tahiti,
Marquesas & Tuamotus,
Bora Bora [French Polynesia was split up when it got taken over by Germany at the request of the western islands],
Hawaii
The Pitcairn Islands.

18 Island Groups in Total, Maybe called Districts or Provinces. I'm gonna call them provinces for now.

Capital: Suva [being more central than the more obvious choice Honolulu it would probably be the favourite for the Provinces nearer to Fiji which happens to be the majority]
Official Languages: S***loads, recognised European languages maybe German, French and English but the islands would have multiple legal languages.

The Parliament would consist of an Upper & Lower house with a Prime Minister being the leader of the majority coalition in parliament. The members of the upper house are elected by the provincial local government, selecting two each when the previous member's mandate of 5 years expires. The Upper house selects a president by majority vote. The President is required to give up their political party registration upon being elected to keep them non-partisan

Political Parties of the Pacific:
Lower House (National Members Assembly), 90 seats
Upper House (Senate), 36 seats

Christan Democratic Party 30/90 Seats,15/36 Seats
Centre-Right, Christian Conservatism
Current Ruling Party since 2016. Has been a major party since the Pacific formed in the early 60s. Has always based policy around Christian values, although has softened recently on the issues allowing same-sex cohabitation to be passed in 2017.

Peoples Democratic Party 25/90 Seats,18/36 Seats
Centre to Centre-Left, Liberal Christianity, Neoliberalism
Party in Opposition. The current president's former party affiliation belonged to the PDP. The merger of the historical economically Left Peoples party and Liberal Democratic party. Socially Centrist to Right and economically Left. Has issues garnering support among the younger and older generation supporters are mostly middle aged centrists.

Peace and Love 13/90 Seats, 4/36 Seats
Left to Left Wing, Social Progressivism, Secularlisim, Social Democracy
Party in Opposition. Founded in the 1960s as part of the Hippie movement as a more left-wing alternative to the Democratic and Peoples party. Experienced a resurgence in the 1990s as the PDP moved to the centre. Popular among young people and older people formerly part of the small pacific hippie movement.

Ecological Heritage Party 8/90 Seats,0/36 Seats
Green Politics, Big Tent
Currently on the Crossbench in parliament. Only definitive policies are pro-environmentalism. Is popular among environmentally conscious Pacific cultures. Support is required often to pass government policy

Pacific Nationalist Party 8/90 Seats,5/36 Seats
Right-Wing, Christan Nationalism
Government Partner. Pretty self-explanatory. Popular among older and younger traditional voters.

One Pacific Party 6/90 Seats
Right-Wing, Protectionist, Right-Wing populism
The Pacifics answer to crazy right-wing populist movements across the world. Has a bad reputation but the CDP was required to form a coalition with them to even form a minority government of 44 seats. Has ended up dragging the CDPs popularity down with them. the largest voice against cooperation with Europe and nearby nations. Soaks up uncomfortable amounts of the younger hardline Christian vote, can be put down to charismatic in touch young leader.

wouldn't press freedom in continent be all pretty much in a good situation since Antipodea and Nieuw Holland both are completely free societies (in fact if any of the country's had an issue, i'd imagine it would be new wessex in truth which would only be good).
some free societies have sensationalist, biased media, it’s not problematic, but it’s not perfect.
Also on the Nieuw Holland bit, how come theirs civil unions and marriage in the one country?
the territories i’m assuming would have more conservative views, and i don’t think marriage has been fully legalized on a federal scale.

Due to the rise of that populist political party, I believe they would block an attempt to extend same-sex marriage being nationwide instead being delegated to individual provinces.

True but i would imagine that New Wessex (more like otl Australia) would be the one more prone to sensationalism than the other two (Antipodea with a left wing government for a little while who probably changed media laws to prevent the right-wing sensationalism given they have a majority and Niew Holland who basically has two very centrist alliances on balance, i don't think would be prone to senastionalism and seems like a country who wouldn't be as prone to it). like in my mind at least if we're using world press freedom index, i would have thought Nieuw Holland and Antipodea would be top 10-15 and New Wessex would be merely top 30 mainly i can say because of the lack of really big multinational media corporations (at least french or dutch ones) in comparison to the english speaking world.

I guess it makes sense however on the SSM stance of Nieuw Holland that it would be divided and mainly done state by state.

edit: also would Japan's media be THAT bad (i mean i know Rodoto has the media on lock but would have been thinking noticable problems rather than difficult) given that they do have opposition and one that is outpolling the government (along with a third party).

That is true, forgot to consider that they could do that, i was just confused as to why their where different colours in the same country. They could have done a state by state and territory by territory vote for approval (big cities approving it and the territories rejecting it).

In fact i could do a write up on that.

A quick map of the Australian Continent, Excuse the lack of a key.

One inaccuracy (Roubaix is where otl coffs harbour is, so the very southern border).

Other then that, its everything i could ever ask for (rip tasmania though, not even in alternate history can they catch a break).

I wanted to do a British (and free) madagascar and a Dutch/German South Africa but that may not be possible due to the freedom maps (was thinking that the british, instead of the cape colony, colonise madagascar instead of the french, meaning britsh settlers and indentured labourers there instead).

Alright then, (as a basis, since this is the Swedish Empire's territory, i'll just use Sweden as a basis, poor Finns). I'll edit and add parties as i go on.

Political Parties of the Kingdom of Sweden:

Major Parties (Over 20%):

Labour Party of Sweden (LPS) -
Centre-Left (Social Democracy, Economic Liberalism, Neo-Liberalism)

The largest party in Sweden and the dominant party at that, they have been a large part of the power within Sweden over the last 50 years (being in power for 70% of that time), that time however may be waning, despite this, they still remain the largest party (even if it isn't their previous 2 to 1 advantage they had over their next best party they enjoyed in the 90's and 2000's). The party has been described as a coalition of some Social Democrats and Liberals, with the party having a bit of both in their party platform (which has made them largely appealing in the past).

Sweden Party (SP) - Right-Wing to Far-Right (National Conservatism, Economic Nationalism, Swedish Nationalism, Social Conservatism, Euro-scepticism, Right-Wing Populism, Anti-Immigration, Republicanism)

Sweden's largest right-wing party has had its ups and downs. It has again come to national prevalence on the back of large frustration with many factors within the country as well as a wave of right-wing populism. The Sweden Party is back up to being the 2nd largest party overall. They also are a supporter of Republicanism generally, however haven't made it a major issue (especially as they have to work with the Royalists if they are to win power).

Royalist Party of Sweden (RPS) - Centre-Right (Social Conservatism, Economic Conservatism, Monarchism)

The Royalists and the Swedes have been interchangeable as the largest party on the right for the last 20 years. The Royalists are the oldest party in the country, in their 175th anniversary. They are a more classical conservative party which advocates for the monarchy and its importance in Swedish Society.

Minor Parties (Under 10%):

Progressive Party of Sweden (PPS)
- Left-Wing to Far-Left (Democratic Socialism, Eco Socialism, Left-Wing Populism, Euro-scepticism)

A Party formed by some of the more left wing LPS members as well as those from the Greens Party of Sweden (GPS). The Party has some former communists amongst its ranks and is the most left-wing party that is represented. They are very progressive in its social views as well as advocating for a socialist economic model (including the increase of taxes but decreasing of general costs of living in other areas).

Pirate Party of Sweden (Pirates) - Centre-Left to Centre (Pirate Politics, Economic Liberalism, E-Democracy, Direct Democracy, Freedom of Internet, Social Libertarianism)

The Pirate's in Sweden have more of a Libertarian flair. They advocate for a more direct approach (with voting on their platform conducted online for the term, along with the priority) as well as direct voting on leadership. They advocate for the complete freedom of the internet away from government interference. They are socially Libertarian, stating that the state shouldn't be involved in any domestic matters.

Green Party of Sweden (GPS) - Centre (Green Politics, Green Liberalism, Economic Liberalism, Social Liberalism, Agrarianism)

The current iteration of the GPS are a neo-liberal, Greens and rural party that are concerned with both environmental issues as well as Rural issues. They advocate for lower immigration numbers to limit the environmental impact as well as the full transition to renewable energy (along with the banning of plastic bags and other little environmental policies). They have moved more towards the centre since many of its left wing had left to form the Progressives.

Christian Party of Sweden (CPS) - Centre-Right to Right-Wing (Christian Democracy, Social Conservatism, Economic Populism)

The Christian Party is popular amongst the more religious section of the public but don't have much traction either due to the Royalists and Swede's being far more popular and established parties on the right. They are however looked to as minor coalition partners for either of the two in their voting bloc.

Micro Parties (No Parliamentary Representation):

The Reds - Far-Left (Communism, Marxism-Leninism, Democratic Socialism, Eco-Socialism, Anti-Capitalism, Revolutionary Socialism, Scientific Socialism, Feminism, Euro-scepticism)

Formed out of the more out and out communists from the remnants of the former Marxist Party, the Reds are a properly socialist movement. They have taken seats in Stockholm and in Helsinki as well as in Malmo at a local level.

Political Parties of the Kingdom of Norway:

Major Parties (Over 25%):

Social Democratic Party of Norway (SDP):
Centre-Left (Social Democracy, Progressivism, Trade Unionism)

Typically viewed as the natural party of government in Norway, but don't always get it their own way either. Currently in government since 2018 (after having been out of power for 6 years before that).

Liberal Party of Norway (LP): Centre (Liberalism, Neoliberalism, Green Liberalism, Green Politics)

The 2nd largest party typically in Norway, they are seen as a neo-liberal, big buisiness party that also has a major green streak as well (with the party having absorbed the Centre Party and Greens, both with a fairly environmental streak).

Minor Parties (5-15%):

Socialist People's Party (SPP): Left-Wing (Democratic Socialism, Social Democracy, Left-Wing Populism)

Formed in the 1970's by more ardent democratic socialists, with the left faction (at the time) of the party leaving the social democrats. They have typically enjoyed the third highest support in the country, averaging around 14-15% of the vote nationally. They usually will provide supply and confidence with the Social Democratic Party typically (but also compete with them for votes).

Moderate Party of Norway (MPN): Centre (Liberalism, Centrism, Agrarianism)

Formed mainly from the remnants of the centre party and represents rural interests. the party is typically coalition partners with the Liberal Party.

Royalist Party of Norway (RPN): Centre-Right (Social Conservatism, Economic Liberalism, Monarchism)

The Main actually conservative party. They are an ardently socially conservative party

Micro Parties (Under 5%):

National Party of Norway (NP):
Right-Wing (Social Conservatism, Economic Nationalism, Right-Wing Populism, Anti-Immigration)

Split from the Royalist Party, the National party also absorbed a number of populist, right-wing parties to create the largest micro party, with the party achieving 4% at the last 2 elections. The party is rather controversial in Norway due to its openly anti-immigrant rhetoric (especially due to immigration intake generally being lower than most in europe to begin with), with the party often being accused of racism by other parties.

Pirates of Norway (PN): Centre (Pirate Politics, E-Democracy, Direct Democracy, Libertarianism)

The Pirates are also represented in Norway. They are largely centrist and libertarian in nature, advocating that people should dictate the social and economic future of the country directly.

Animal Party of Norway (APN): Centre-Left (Animal Rights, Animal Welfare, Environmentalism, Green Politics)

The Animal Party is the largest of its kind in Scandanavia, with a lot of Green's left going to the animal party. It advocates for animal welfare and animal rights whilst also representing a number of environmental concerns.

Republican Movement (RM): Centre to Centre-Right (Populism, Republicanism, Centrism)

The main republican party in Norway, formed from a coalition of various republican movements (both left and right) to form a rather radical centrist party.

Government (last election held in 2018):

Social Democratic Party

Coalition Partner:
Animal Party of Norway

Supply and Confidence:

Socialist People's Party
Pirates of Norway

Opposition:
Liberal Party
Moderate Party
Royalist Party

Other Opposition:
National Party

???
we’ve already established the british colonizing south africa and the dutch colonizing madagascar

I think I got the border wrong because when I was making it Coffs Harbour would be on the other side of the border in New Wessex. I moved it up North instead of figuring out a different southern border and shifting it south.

As I've said before, I'm not going to exercise my veto power unless absolutely necessary, but I have some ideas for Hawaii. I feel it's too big a region to fit into the Pacific Federation because of the high population, economic power, and history. I'd think in this universe they'd probably be their own nation. Plus their geographic position has them a bit far off from the other islands of the Federation if I recall correctly (I could be wrong here).

What if we had Hawaii as an independent nation with the Hawaiian monarchy still intact? Possibly within the British sphere of influence?
