While on a tour in the Great Qing to sign a major deal with the Qing military, Tommy’s caravan is ambushed by the Chinese nationalist terror organisation “The Rings of Mandarin” who kidnap him in order to force him to make weapons for them. An injury he sustained during the attack would force him to create the mini arc-reactor that would later become iconic to his character.

The investigation leads to Col. Cortez deducing that the kingpin Ricardo Diaz was responsible for the ambush. After infiltrating his organization, Tommy and Lance kill Diaz and take over his business.
