Absolutely love this! Just curious as to when the map's supposed to take place, seeing as it uses population data from 1950 but includes dates such as 1954 and 1978
Good question honestly. I think my original idea was to have it be set in the late 50ies but I later had the idea of implying Danibia becoming an germ-cell of a Pan-European State with the accession of Slovakia. Probably just forgot to update the population statistic though

So what the heck happened with the Soviets? Was there a limited WWIII in 1949 before the USSR could get its nuclear mojo working?

Edit: it's a great map, just curious as to backstory.

Perhaps North Germany is a Soviet puppet? Basically jutting out the Iron curtain in a weird way

I was more puzzled by Hungary, since the fact that the Soviets had an occupation zone in Austria would indicate that Hungary (and Ruthenia/Carpathia) were behind the Iron Curtain.

"what about germany in the cold war?"

The United States of America would eventually mobilize late against the Japanese as well as the Japanese winning the battle of the coral sea. This results in the american focus in the pacific leading to a lesser amount of american volunteers and supplies to the Europeans. This causes D-Day to fail tremendously & same with a strong landing in Italy proper. With little pressure from the British the Germans were able to focus on the soviets, as they would be, the Germans, effectively overestimated and would be crushed. Hitler orders a nuclear missile to head towards both Minsk and Edinburgh forcing all sides to sign peace. Hitler would later be assassinated and Hermann Goring would be placed as Fuhrer.

This map takes place during 1965 commonly called the "Climax of the Hot Armistice" or "Winter War". Due to an earlier start on nukes, this leads to the birth of Arabic nukes. America would give Israel, in efforts to defend itself, nuclear weaponry. The same would go for the Iraqis with the soviets and the UAR with Germany. This of course ends in a nuclear war, causing a splinter in oil markets.

This is a WIP.

Why in the world would America be giving Israel nuclear weapons considering that it wasn't really until the late seventies that Israeli-American relations actually started to increase, prior to that Israel had very good relations with the Soviets and America tended to be more ambivalent towards them.

What is the religious impact of such an event for both the uptime and downtime Jewish communities? Heck, for all faiths. Something that is often glossed over in such scenarios is that people will only really be able to think of such an event as a divine act, and the particular details here - a Jewish homeland appearing just at the outbreak of the Second World War - will be particularly significant.

I honestly would not be surprised if you saw a noticeable uptick in conversion to Judaism globally, given that many will have to conclude that the status as the Chosen People is undeniably warranted.

That's quite right- I don't think we pay enough attention to the religious consequences of ISOTs. And the results of a place of such religious significance as the Holy Land being ISOTed? Phew... that could be very big. Lots of apocalyptic talk of course, and plenty of people claiming that World War II was the Gog-Magog war and the ISOT the prophesied divine intervention from the Book of Isaiah that will prove G-d's existence and result in the world converting to Judaism- which disappointingly hasn't happened yet. A couple of false messiahs and calls from certain quarters for the destruction of the Dome of the Rock and the rebuilding of the Temple. Certainly the considerable expansion of Israel in this scenario is driven at least in part by religious fervor and believers seeking to make the biblical borders from "the brook of Egypt to the Euphrates". Among most Jews the ISOT has given Israel and Zionism seemingly divine sanction- not necessarily to the Israeli government or policies- but to Israel's existence and holy mission as a safe place and advocate for world Jewry. Pretty much everyone Jewish thinks that the ISOT was G-d acting to destroy the Nazis. Views among the Christians are more mixed- there was an uptick of conversions to Judaism, but most Christian denominations simply acknowledged that, y'know, the Old Testament is a thing and took a step back from replacement theology since clearly the Jews are still protected to some degree. There are plenty of antisemites insisting that the ISOT was the work of Satan, or the Jews in league with Satan who now plot to take over the world, or that the Jews are secretly aliens, or just evil people with crazy technology ruling the world in secret. According to the Communists the ISOT was a natural event. According to most Muslims Israel is a scourge that is explicitly the enemy of Allah- the Israelis haven't made themselves popular in the area through their expansion- and the ISOT must have been sorcery or something else.

This is a very simplistic and generalized description of things, if you want a detailed analysis of the response by world religions in an ISOT check out my TL Deo Vindice which is not an Israel ISOT but spends about 50,000 words or so talking about how each religion on Earth reacted to Europe disappearing in 1905.

Well, while waiting for Israel's world-dominating ISOT, an interesting piece. What exactly went on in Iraq? What made TTL's pro-Axis coup turn into an independent Assyria and Kurdistan?

It was more of a general anti-British coup, during which the Israelis occupied the western bit of the country because they were concerned about weapons flowing into Transjordan where the Emirate was rebelling at the time. Britain suppressed the coup and later broke off Kurdistan and Assyria as independent pieces during an alternate decolonization, in the hope that they would prove more reliable long-term allies than an Iraq that was waaaaay more anti-Western than OTL. Something similar happened in French Syria where the French experimented with different borders and a couple of extra countries.

Here's a WIP map that I'm currently making for my upcoming monarchist US election game over in Shared Worlds. I used a combination of the NextGen OTL Worlda base map and the S.U.C.K. color key, portraying a map of the world on roughly January 1, 1796 of OTL. I still have to finish Africa and drawing up the governorates in the Russian Empire.

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one, that supernatural Austro-Prussian map.

@Keperry - I didn't realise I needed that map until I saw it.

I want this to get all the likes.

Maps and scenarios like these give me life.
(Or, in the spirit of the occasion, these maps grant me an unnatural un-life)

Thoroughly awesome

Thanks all!

Honesty, I love to see the rest of the world.

What of the rest of Europe? France? The UK? Russia? Italy?

What of the Balkans and the Middle East? You mention the Ottomans having djinns, but djinns are never the most trustworthy beings. Let alone the amount of other supernatural things that would rear themselves in the Middle East. (Egypt, Levant, Iraq, Greece.) It be a sandbox to say the least.

America? You mention Bloody Mary heading to the States, but between African American slaves, and Native Americans and more...

France is a radical republic (we can see on the map that it extends to the Rhine, Batavia and (northern) Italy are its client states), somehow managing to balance Jacobin-style Terror with Thermidorian-style decadence; its dominant "religion" is the Cult of Reason which is quite similar to the Illuminati and Freemasons (secular arcanists and esotericists) but with more neopagan Egyptian and Greco-Roman elements bubbling ominously under the surface, thanks to the influence of Napoleon's expedition. In reaction to the supernatural mess on its western borders Russia has rejected any prospect of westernizing, doubled down on autocracy and serfdom, and is increasingly governed by theocratic Orthodox mysticism, even as it loses more and more control over its western provinces to the vampires, werewolves, golems, etc. Britain is its Victorian self turned up to 11, and sees its mix of Christianity, technology, and capitalism (they may not be sure about this Darwin fellow but they sure do like Social Darwinism) as the world's greatest bulwark against supernatural threats both radical and reactionary, never mind that its own cities are devolving into a dark-Satanic-mills steampunk industrial hellscape rife with cannibal serial killers and the like.

The Ottomans have lost a lot of territory with the independence of Egypt under Muhammad Ali and Greece under George Byron, both of whom have fully embraced varieties of neopaganism fitting their respective countries (and the latter of whom has seemed a bit... off, ever since his near death experience). Now the Ottomans are just trying to hold on to Anatolia and the rest of the Balkans, but with the Slavic boyar classes increasingly vampirizing they seem set to lose even more territory to Dracula's conspiracy.

In America, the USA and CSA exist and are at war though between the voodoo rebellion states like Louisiana and Florida, shamanic empires of the Sioux, Comanche, and Cherokee, independent witch-hunting Puritan theocracy of New England, and Realm of the God-Emperor Norton, both are quite a bit smaller than OTL. The Union came to be increasingly dominated by a Masonic conspiracy against all these supernatural threats on the one hand, and on the other hand the biggest supernatural threat of all--the Slave Power of southern slaveowners turned vampires by Mary Tudor and her descendants--with the tension between these two irreconcilable forces leading to civil war.

Seems like Prussia has the most wolves per capita. Cause almost every city has them. Maybe this explains why Prussia is so OP.

The werewolf packs outside of Prussia are feral while those in Prussia are systematically tamed and in fact artificially created. Pretty OP! But then again so are vampires...

This sounds way to cool, I need a role playing game set in this universe (also "Golem-protected Jewish community" feels like awesome worldbuilding that ties into the day-to-day preoccupations of a community and its members)

Not that I'd ever design an RPG but "what'd make a good RPG" was certainly in my mind (tip: campaign in the Black Forest, or Prague).

Under the terms of the Alcatraz Accords, all members of WATO signatory nations may travel freely into other signatory nations to live, work, hunt or fish, without delay or restriction.

These are not hard borders except around the Williamette Valley and Deseret, as well as a hard border with the United States.

Mexico and British North America is also a soft border with California and with WATO nations.

This honesty seem to be based off a plan by Churchill plan for Post-War Germany.
Thats what I was going for

curious as to backstory.
There in not a lot of backstory to it honestly other than the Soviets initially doing worse and being a lot more exhausted by the end of the war. This allows for much of Central Europe to be permanently demilitarized with the direct Russian post-war sphere of influence reduced to Romania, Poland and Bulgaria. Stalin tolerates this since a large buffer between him and the western allies seems preferable than a hard border. Not being guaranteed lasting influence leads to way worse looting though.

A War With Heart and Soul Iserlohn.png

The year is 1936. Twenty-four years ago the Second American Civil War ended in a stalemate, with the United States government officially ending hostilities with the United People's Republics, who controlled virtually all territory west of the Rocky Mountains. It is also the tenth anniversary of the death of the first leader of the UPR, Eugene Debs. Both the UPR and the rump United States, commonly referred to as East and West America, have now existed for more than two decades and have proven themselves to be able to survive. But the rest of the world seems ready for war, something which the Americas have thankfully put behind themselves for now.

In Europe the loss of Prussia against the Franco-Austrian coalition in 1870 led to Berlin aligning itself with the Russians, and tensions between the remaining great powers led to the establishment of three competing power blocs: the Triple Alliance, the League of Free Peoples, and the Danzig Pact. Tensions are high between these three groups of states, though international crises like the Third Balkan War and the Scramble for the Pacific have led to some limited cooperation.

However despite this the world is itching for war. The Kingdom of Spain, since 1874 under the control of the controversial Carlist branch of the Bourbon dynasty, has been experiencing unrest both in its colonies and at home. Ultranationalist agitators can frequently be seen on North German streets, demanding that Berlin and St. Petersburg lead an effort to unite all German people under the Hohenzollerns. Secret meetings between Greek diplomats and agents by the great powers are under way.

In short, Europe is looking like a powder keg after decades of peace between the powers of the continent. The question is not if war will break out, but where it will break out first, and how far it will exactly spread. Will the machinations of the Romanovs, the Bonapartes, and the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas tear Spain apart? Will nations like the rump Ottoman Empire or the Chinese State, the ambitious successor of the Qing Dynasty, be dragged into the conflict?

And, most importantly for the Americans, what impact would a world war have on the currently stable situation in their hemisphere..?

Note: I just wanted to do a quick shout out to UpvoteAnthology's People's Socialist Atlas and RvBOmally's Strength Through Unity projects for partially inspiring the North America of this map.

Am I happy with the write-up? No. Also I honestly feel like South America and China are a bit lackluster. But I wanted to get this done and thus here it is. Enjoy!

Could be a result of a different end to the Second World War, like the SS relieving Budapest in 1945 and causing the Red Army to refocus on the Vistula.

Here's a map based on a DBWI I participated in here

Shu 3.png

Li Zicheng takes Beijing in 1644 and kills the Chongzhen Emperor as IOTL, but is defeated and killed at Shanhai Pass by the Manchu. Zhang Xianzhong, warlord in control of Sichuan, builds an agricultural and administrative base in the province during this time and raises an army. When Li is defeated, he marches rapidly along the north China plain to fill the vacuum. A Later Jin army under Prince Dorgon attempts to march south but is thwarted west of Qufu by Zhang's army, now consisting also of Ming and Shun defectors. This takes heavy casualties and cannot pursue the Later Jin into Zhili, but the Manchu flee and regroup after the defeat.

Following this, Zhang declares himself Emperor of Great Shu, after his state and the province he ruthlessly ruled, while the Manchu fought a civil war between Hooge and the Shunzhi Emperor's traditionalists (loyal to dead Emperor Wen [Hong Taiji]) and Karma Kagyu Buddhists under the Vajrayana Emperor Wu. Hooge would be defeated by Ligdan Khan's Gelug Buddhist confederacy of Mongol nations, and eventually lose the civil war. Emperor Wu would build fortifications with newer artillery on the borders in Zhili, south of what had been Beijing. The city would be made the capital by Emperor Wu, renamed Nandu. Zhang would make his capital Luoyang.

After Gushi Khan's son Tashi Batur rebelled in Qinghai under the banner of the Karma Kagyu school of Vajrayana Buddhism, he and his sect were ruthlessly wiped out by the Khoshud Khan with the help of Ligdan Khan, who under the influence of his Oirat councillor Badma Erdeni had united most of the Eastern Mongols under Gelug. The cities of Moghulistan and the Gansu Corridor, as well as most of the Western Mongols and Oirat, would be brought under their control in the 1640s.

Gushi Khan of the Khoshud unites the Eastern Mongols behind the 5th Dalai Lama and the Gelug sect after defeating a Karma Kagyu revolt led by his son with the help of fellow-Gelug Ligdan Khan of the Later Yuan Chakhar Confederacy. The Later Yuan had reunited the Eastern and Western Mongols with the help of Ming funds and weapons and Gelug Buddhist Manchu fleeing the anti-Gelug reprisals of the Karma Kagyu Buddhist Emperor Wu of Later Jin, who had won the civil war.

Zhang made himself emperor after the defeat of the Later Jin southern expedition, declaring the Jiantong reign. His campaigns in the north against the Later Jin drained the treasury, while his Chancellor Wang's policy of seizing assets of monasteries in order to pay for them caused widespread resentment. The campaigns in Zhili resulted in high casualties and little progress as Emperor Wu had built fortifications armed with newer artillery, and Zhang spent even more money procuring the loyalty of a rebel admiral of Taiwan's Zheng family (protectors of the Hongguang Emperor of Ming), only to lose these substantial naval forces to Manchu artillery and Korean forces in an assault on Later Jin coastal fortifications.

In a bloody battle outside of Nandu (Beijing), the Jiantong Emperor was killed. The army, threatening to disperse, was exhorted by a popular officer to stay together and garrison the northern forts of Shu in order to protect the country from the Manchu. This general, Feng Shuangli, made himself King of Xue and resisted the Later Jin successfully when they attacked north China alongside the Wan.

When Western Chinese Buddhists launched an uprising led by a group of radical Vajrayana millenarians, the regency of the ten year old Dingxi Emperor were unable to hold the country together and allowed Xi'an to be taken by rebels. This signaled the weakness of Shu to Gushi Khan and the forces of the Tibetans and Chakhar joined together in a grand council to acclaim the Dalai Lama the Arhat Emperor of Great Wan (大卍) before launching a massively successful campaign of conquest across China, destroying the remnants of Great Shu as well as the Great Xue and much of the Southern Ming.

Crossposting from MOTF 206: Goodbye Lenin

Given that the in-universe writeup is contained within the image, the OOC context for this entry was that I've recently been researching the history of Romania under Nicolae Ceaușescu, and the various eccentric, megalomaniacal and totalitarian actions taken by that regime that dwarf that of North Korea. As such, I began to wonder what would have happened if that regime survived its OTL collapse and lived on to the present day. In this timeline, Ceaușescu does not only stack the Securitate with fanatical loyalists, but also works to ensure the loyalty of the army throughout the 1970s and 80s. As the Soviet Union collapses, a coup by Soviet hardliners in 1989 sees a crackdown on dissent in the Eastern Bloc, and as much of Eastern Europe descends into violence, protests never break out in Romania as Ceaușescu maintains his stranglehold on power. As the rest of the Eastern Bloc - including the Soviet Union - crumbles under its own weight, Romania is left as the last socialist nation in Europe. With his power secure, Ceaușescu embarks on ever more ambitious projects, including the continuation of his OTL project of systematisation that saw vast swathes of historic Bucharest destroyed to make way for a grand avenue and enormous palace in his honour. The Ceaușescu cult of personality continues, so that after Nicolae's eventual death in 1998, he is still revered as the Eternal Leader. While his son Valentin assumes the presidency (his heir presumptive, Nicu, died from his alcoholism in 1996 as in OTL), the real power lies with the faceless men behind the throne, who continue to cultivate the cult of personality to lend the regime its legitimacy. While ordinary Romanians can barely keep the lights on, more and more parts of the capital are rebuilt in totalitarian style, while vast resources are directed towards its military, especially its nuclear arsenal. Romania in 2019 is a rogue state, totalitarian and isolated, yet small numbers of tourists continue to visit the country. I envisaged this map as part of a brochure given to English-speaking tourists, designed to extol the virtues of the state. Instead, simply by consulting an OTL map, the signs of totalitarianism run rampant lie on the page, and simply reading the names of the locations is enough to express the dictatorial horror of the regime.
