In 1819, Massachusetts agreed to allow Maine formal secession from the state after decades of tension with Boston. What if, in an alternate timeline, Maine was allowed to secede from Massachusetts instead of becoming a state in the US, became an independent republic. Would Monroe be able to force an independent Maine back into the United States? If Maine was able to become free of the United States, what would be the implications on US politics in the decades following?

Well, Monroe would most likely try to encourage them to join before deploying any military action. The rest of the country would probably see the land as American land, even if it had been freed from Massachusetts control. There would be clamoring for action to retake it, but I'm not sure Monroe would actually attempt any.

Was there any support in Maine at that time to become its own Republic, rather than it's own state? After all, there was that disputed boarded with Britain, abs the best way to protect themselves would be for Maine to remain in the Union.

If Maine isn't in the US, then it joins British North America and potentially later Canada. Maybe it wouldn't mind that option if they got the border with the Canadian colonies they were asking for.
