2010 FIFA World Cup - Kamerun
2010FIFA.jpg

The 2010 FIFA World Cup, also branded as Kamerun 2010, was held in Kamerun from 11 June to 11 July 2010.

Only the second World Cup to be held in Africa, this edition was due to be held in Africa due to a rotation policy by FIFA : in 2004, Kamerun managed to win the bid over Egypt, Mali and Tunisia. The former German colony, had the benefits of being a stable and large country, along with a strong football culture (being a five-time Champion of the African Cup) along with very strong players such as Samuel Eto’o. The Ruben Um Nyobe Stadion in Duala was renovated to afford to host the final while the cities of Garua, Victoria, Freistadt, Jaunde, Bafoussam and Bata were selected as host cities. King Rudolf and Prime Minister Maikano Abdoulaye cooperated together to make the World Cup “a moment for Africa to shine”, just in time for the 40th anniversary of Kamerun’s independence, spending over 1 billion Reichmarks for the construction.

Along with the host country and the defending champions, France, 30 other teams were qualified : for Europe, Sweden, England, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Catalonia, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy, Spain ; for South America, Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Brazil ; for Asia, Japan, Oman, Korea, Iran and Afghanistan ; for North America, the United States, Costa Rica, Mexico, and for Africa itself, Egypt, Liberia, Togoland, Ashante and Tunisia. Noticeably absent were Croatia, Russia and the Ottoman Empire, while Afghanistan and Oman made their first appearences.

The group stage proved quite uneventful, with an above average score for Africa, as two teams, including Kamerun, managed to advance to the Round of 16. The qualified were Chile, Kamerun (Group A, over Sweden and Afghanistan) ; Brazil, Japan (Group B, over Ecuador and Egypt) ; England, Argentina (Group C, over Korea and Tunisia) ; Colombia, The Netherlands (Group D, over Portugal and Iran) ; Germany, Paraguay (Group E, over Greece and Costa Rica) ; Catalonia, Ashante (Groupe F, over Denmark and Oman) ; France, Mexico (Group G, over Switzerland and Liberia), ; Italy and the United States (Groupe H, over Spain and Togoland).

All African teams were eliminated in the Round of 16, with the host country, Kamerun, being outed 4-1 by Brazil in the Ruben Um Nyobe Stadion and the former colonizer, Germany, defeating Ashante 1-0. Mexico made a surprise by defeating favorites Italy in extra time, while Netherlands managed to defeat another favorite, Argentina, in penalties. The incumbent champions, France, won a very difficult match against the United States, led by an innovative Kobe Bryant.

But France would fall in the quarter-finals against their best enemy, Germany. The German victory were easy as compared to their other competitors : Catalonia had to continue into penalty shootout to finally defeat Mexico, while the matches for England (against Japan, winning with two goals scored by Matt Smith) and the Netherlands (against Brazil, 2-1) went into extra time.

The demi-finals between Germany and England, the 6 July in Victoria, proved particularly controversial : with a star-studded squad (with Steven Gerrard, Wayne Ronney and Matt Smith), heavily supported by a Kamerunian attendance historically resenting Germany, the Lions were finally defeated 4-1 by Germany, after a disallowed goal was sanctioned by the referee, prompting the FIFA to apologize to the English Federation. Nevertheless, the Netherlands continued their endurance course, having to go into extra time for each play of the knockout phase : confronted with a heavy Catalan team, thanks to a wonderful goal by Wesley Sneijder. Led by Bert van Marwijk, the team led by Arjen Robben, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Wesley Sneijder and Robin van Persie were prepared to fight the World Cup final of their history, and maybe their third title… While Germany, that had already lost in Chile in 1974 against Netherlands, hoped to earn their third star.

The finals, fought in the Ruben Um Nyobe Stadion in Duala, pitted Germany against Netherlands. The German team that counted players such as Mesut Özil, Miroslav Klose, Manuel Neuer, Thomas Mûller or Toni Kroos, were decided to mark history and win for the Mannschaft a title for World Champions, the first since 1982, avenging the humiliation of 1990. After all, the Dutch had already been champions in 1998… Supported by the African crowd, still resentful against German colonizers, the Dutch, who were exhausted by three long matches, managed to defend for another 120 minutes, until a goal by Robin van Persie on the 109th minute managed to deliver the Netherlands and, along with it, the whole game and the cup, awarding their third title to the Netherlands.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup was seen as a major event for the African continent, synonymous with poverty and underdevelopment ; the overall great performance by Kamerun was seen as the hallmark of Abdoulaye’s tenure, who would die in office the following year. Nevertheless, the foreign debt created by the organization of the tournament proved a burden for Kamerun and is considered by some as a factor in the anti-Muslim pogroms, the 2017 military coup and the 2019 German military intervention. Due to the triumph of European teams (as all teams in the demi-finals hailed from the Old Continent), the promise of a “triumph for Africa” was also reduced.

So, who was the last leader of Afghanistan before it was annexed into Iran and what was Afghanistan's pre-annexation history like?

Uh oh indeed…

Looks like the South African Civil War was hell.
It was hell indeed.
You never want to see the words “Great Evacuation” anywhere

Where did white South Africans go after the civil war?

I presume the Great Evacuation was for all of South Africa’s white inhabitants?

I presume mainly Great Britain and the Netherlands?

Or former British colonies like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Borealia, plus the U.S.

Them too of course.
The Great Evacuation concerned mostly White South Africans : Russia and Germany were most keen on helping them, not the other "coloured" populations... They mostly resettled in the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Russia and North America. It is a quite sizeable population, comparable to the White Russians, in a sense that they are heavily nationalistic, educated and affluent. The less wealthy went to live in refugee camps in Angola, Mozambique and Rhodesia, along with Asian and Indian South Africans.
How did the Brazilian-Argentine War end? Also, what were the civil wars that happened in both countries?
The war ended with a stalemate for both countries. The two Argentine Civil Wars saw the government pitted against syndicalist movements comparable to the ones in France, while the Brazilian Civil War was more comparable to the Mexican Revolution.
That’s quite a refugee crisis/community even across so many countries

Considering the last President of South Africa here hailed from the white opposition to Apartheid IOTL and Azania’s desire for a pure black nation, we can only hope that Asians and Coloureds were also included in said evacuation.

Refugee camps in Rhodesia and Kalahari were mentioned.
They weren't. Either they are basically third-class citizens to the Azanians, either they are flooding refugee camps in Rhodesia and Kalahari. Many found refuge in the South African diaspora though.
Impressive how you make a wikibox into horror.
Thank you !
Speaking of which, I am interested what the Valentine's Day Disaster was and what triggered it.
Malan dropped a nuclear bomb on a ANC military camp near the Kalahari border, then sent the military to reconquer Soweto street by street and house by house. Needless to say, it was a bloodbath and the beginning of the end.
What happened to George H. W. Bush and his family, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama in this timeline? Will they get their own posts in the future?
The Bushes had a great political career in government, so did Hillary. I resist to tell you the current whereabouts of Obama.

The wealthiest woman in the world is the Chinese Fan Hongwei, who earned her fortune in petrochemicals.
Bukele made his fortune in cryptocurrency and is considered like a stable Sam Bankman-Fried ; the technology is much more on point and accepted.

Might be a peaceful annexation rather than an invasion, what with Pan-Iranism being a stronger force here.

That sounds pretty rational since conquest of Afghanistan is prettydifficult unless you can't control tribes with "Divide and Rule" principle.

Also, realized this, as Osama Bin Laden is one of the richest men in the world as head of the Bin Laden Group here, any prominent controversies or scandals involving his religious or political views here? And on that note, what is his main source of wealth ITTL aside from construction as I imagine he has diversified his company's assets due to his vast wealth here.

Khalid Daud Khan as King and Abdullah Abdullah as Prime Minister.
Understandable.
I thought so.
More intrested I am to know it works for Iran. Taking Afghanistan is not very easy task for anyone.

Afghanistan gradually became a puppet state of Iran until the annexation was "welcomed and requested" by the Afghan government. It sent massive shockwaves throughout the world, and the Iranians have to fight a Pashtun nationalist guerilla now.
Speaking of which, what became of Sam Bankman-Fried and others like him like Elizabeth Holmes ITTL?
They are making their way in the start-up region.

The Binladin Group succesfully diversified in industry, finance, banking and oil exploitation, becoming an Arabic conglomerate. As of his opinions, he is seen as eccentric as any multibillionaire, with most concerns being about his poor health.

What kind of ideology are these Pashtun nationalists? Secular nationalists, moderate Islamists, or fanatical jihadists?

So he's a bog-standard conservative Muslim in his religious views ITTL?

Well, this is both interesting and worrying, especially with how this makes me wonder what big internet scams are there ITTL?

The Pashtuns are moderate islamists, more bent on keeping their privileges within Iran than religion. As of Bin Laden, he is seen as a rigorist and devout Muslim, but he managed to keep his comments low for the sake business.
The Internetz is a wild place ITTL...

What is the general opinion of socialist movements post 1949? Have they been discredited entirely. If not what movements are still seen as creditable?
