Flag of the Italian Union.

Oh my fucking God I'm finally done with the map. Just gotta write it up and boom, update time!

After this'll probably be France or the Balkans, then perhaps we'll go overseas

the Italian Union
OVERVIEW OF THE ITALIAN UNION:
---

BASIC HISTORY & GENERAL RUNDOWN
Italian Union.png

The Italian Union is a confederal state comprised of 14 entities. Thirteen of these entities are states, and have full voting rights. However, Rome (Roma) is the capital and is, as such, considered unable to vote in presidential elections[1]. The nation is a federal republic, and is considered one of the most democratic nations in the world. This democratic and liberal spirit has largely been cited as originating from the Island of Corsica: specifically, the Republic of Corsica. The small, short-lived island-nation has had a huge impact on Italian society, enough so that its first President (Pasquale Paoli) is considered one of the Fathers of the Italian Nation, and likewise Corsica and Corsican imagery are common in Italian culture.

-
The Italian Peninsula is somewhat divided linguistically. There are several loosely-related dialects that are spoken across the Union, with a Tuscan-descended Standard Italian acting as a lingua franca between the various different groups. Because of these varying cultural-linguistic peoples, there are some separatist movements within Italy. By-and-large, though, there are not many and the ones that are present are not that popular. Italian culture and patriotism is partially due to the French Republic, who many Italians see as Italy's closest ally, enough so that Italy's flag is in homage to France's[2]. As mentioned prior, Corsican imagery is featured heavily in Italy, and the same can be said for French. High populations of French-speakers are present in Piedmont and Corsica, with some ethnic enclaves being found in Tuscany, Latium, Naples, and Sardinia. There are, likewise, large populations of Germans in Milan, with enclaves existing as far south as Romagna. Some Latin communities remain in Latium and in Rome, but the Latin language is slowly dying in Italy.
-
There is, also, a mild schisms in the Italian nation, mainly North-South or East-West. The former is less apparent then one expects, as historically, southern Italy has been much more rural than the urban north. However, since the late 1950s, several presidents have begun lessening the divide. The East-West Divide refers to the Appenine Mountains, a physical split that has and continues to be rather troublesome for travel, and other forms of transportation.

POLITICS OF ITALY

Italy has several political parties that all select candidates to run for presidential election. One term is five years, and each president can only have two terms in total. Each candidate has a running mate[3], who has some power in the government, but mainly acts as the next-in-line in case of presidential resignation. There are two major political parties participating in the 2017 Presidential Elections, they are listed below, as well as the two minor parties with the highest votes:

THE CORSICAN PARTY:
Ideology: Social democracy, social liberalism
Position: Centre-left
Founded: 1877
Youth wing: Young Corsicans

Candidate for 2017 elections: Massimo D'Alema

Notes:
[1] Think like Washington, D.C. That's Rome.
[2] France's flag is fairly identical to the flag of France as in real life: Italy's flag is Rome's flag with a white bar between Rome's colors, like France's flag with Paris.
[3] In Italy, the running mate acts is the Prime Minister, but is essentially vice-president, a la the United States' VP.
[4] That's supposed to a flag of the Emperor of North Rome's beheading in the middle of Modena.
---
A/N: Yeah, this is more complex than I was expecting. Don't get too spoiled, but if you want the full timeline-ish, I'll post the .txt in the files.

An italy heavily influenced by Corsica? That's really awesome and unexpected. That's also a surprisingly pretty flag, the colours fit well.

Great work as always, although i find it funny that it is considering as one of the most democratic country, despite the fact that Rome (which would have 5-7% of the total population) can't vote for presidential elections.

Wow, these maps are Incredible. I'm always amazed by how people can transform the small, simple worlda into something so beautiful and detailed. After I'm finally done with the NextGen stuff (If that ever happens...?), I really need to study the maps that you have done to improve my own style. I'm blown away by the quality of everything you've posted here. Mad props to you!

Eh, same goes for DC, I guess. Well, minus the big population. Don't worry, though, they're probably going to become a full-fledged state sooner or later.

Oh my fucking god are you kidding me? Achjjjjhjj thank you so much! Thank you so much, it means so much!

I have just one question (buy maybe is just nitpicking): in the details about the Italian Union, are said that the country is a republic, but in the timeline is never stated if the italian countries or even the Union passed by some sort of revolution or government change, so, the Union is a republic with monarchical states as forming it or is something else?

Ah, apologies. No, I never mentioned it, but something along the lines that the monarchs of Italy resigned upon joining the Union. The aristocracy of Italy are mostly comprised of the ex-royal families. Some likely took up politics, to boot.

Alright, this is gonna take a bit.
Essentially, I decided to go Balkans first, and I'm doin' a new format that I might use for other countries / regions, but probably not frequently. That being said, it's gonna take awhile because the Balkans have six nations and I'm only now working on the second one.
Additionally, school starts on the fourth for me, so I'll also have to do schoolwork and stuff like that. Pair that with the maps improving in quality and updates are going to slow down, most likely.
After I post the Balkans, I'll probably focus on the United States of America, and then maybe hop around across the globe from there. I'm definitely going to be reworking some aspects of the United States:
-Probably making Indian States normal states in the Union
-Changing the political structure from mostly-independent to just multipartisan.
-Probably giving the US the Bahamas as well.

That being said, here's a map of the Balkans, just to give a taste of the aesthetics to come.

(There are six states here, but one's too small to put the flag on the map)

Announcement-type thing:
Got 1/3 of the way done with the Balkans and got bored, I'll upload the two things soon, but new poll up! Gonna help decide how America's gonna look, so thanks!

The one I'd like an explanation for is the very first. Just how autonomous are the native states and how many tribes get a state?
Alright. The first one is essentially how the USA is right now: self-rule but still participating in the US in elections and stuff. Honestly, probably not the best idea. Probably will end up being the second option.
