OVERVIEW OF THE ITALIAN UNION:
---
BASIC HISTORY & GENERAL RUNDOWN
The
Italian Union is a confederal state comprised of 14 entities. Thirteen of these entities are states, and have full voting rights. However, Rome (
Roma) is the capital and is, as such, considered unable to vote in presidential elections
[1]. The nation is a federal republic, and is considered one of the most democratic nations in the world. This democratic and liberal spirit has largely been cited as originating from the Island of Corsica: specifically, the Republic of Corsica. The small, short-lived island-nation has had a huge impact on Italian society, enough so that its first President (Pasquale Paoli) is considered one of the Fathers of the Italian Nation, and likewise Corsica and Corsican imagery are common in Italian culture.
-
The Italian Peninsula is somewhat divided linguistically. There are several loosely-related dialects that are spoken across the Union, with a Tuscan-descended Standard Italian acting as a
lingua franca between the various different groups. Because of these varying cultural-linguistic peoples, there are some separatist movements within Italy. By-and-large, though, there are not many and the ones that are present are not that popular. Italian culture and patriotism is partially due to the French Republic, who many Italians see as Italy's closest ally, enough so that Italy's flag is in homage to France's
[2]. As mentioned prior, Corsican imagery is featured heavily in Italy, and the same can be said for French. High populations of French-speakers are present in Piedmont and Corsica, with some ethnic enclaves being found in Tuscany, Latium, Naples, and Sardinia. There are, likewise, large populations of Germans in Milan, with enclaves existing as far south as Romagna. Some Latin communities remain in Latium and in Rome, but the Latin language is slowly dying in Italy.
-
There is, also, a mild schisms in the Italian nation, mainly North-South or East-West. The former is less apparent then one expects, as historically, southern Italy has been much more rural than the urban north. However, since the late 1950s, several presidents have begun lessening the divide. The East-West Divide refers to the Appenine Mountains, a physical split that has and continues to be rather troublesome for travel, and other forms of transportation.

POLITICS OF ITALY
Italy has several political parties that all select candidates to run for presidential election. One term is five years, and each president can only have two terms in total. Each candidate has a running mate
[3], who has some power in the government, but mainly acts as the next-in-line in case of presidential resignation. There are two major political parties participating in the 2017 Presidential Elections, they are listed below, as well as the two minor parties with the highest votes:
THE CORSICAN PARTY:
Ideology: Social democracy, social liberalism
Position: Centre-left
Founded: 1877
Youth wing: Young Corsicans
Candidate for 2017 elections: Massimo D'Alema
.
THE REVOLUTIONARY PARTY[4]
Ideology: Liberal conservatism, Christian democracy
Position: Centre-right
Founded: 1885
Youth wing: the Moderate Youth
Candidate for 2017 elections: Antonio Tajani
.
COMMUNIST PARTY OF ITALY:

Notes:
[1] Think like Washington, D.C. That's Rome.
[2] France's flag is fairly identical to the flag of France as in real life: Italy's flag is Rome's flag with a white bar between Rome's colors, like France's flag with Paris.
[3] In Italy, the running mate acts is the Prime Minister, but is essentially vice-president, a la the United States' VP.
[4] That's supposed to a flag of the Emperor of North Rome's beheading in the middle of Modena.

A/N: Yeah, this is more complex than I was expecting. Don't get too spoiled, but if you want the full timeline-ish, I'll post the .txt in the files.
