An MLB Collaborative TL: Piece of Cake: The Cubs win Game 6 in '03

Punishment revealed
  • May 7th 2005: "USC has been found guilty of paying players over, resulting in them getting a 5 year bowl ban and heavy restrictions on recruiting. However, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush were found to have not been paid over, as such they will not be penalized. On the other hand, Miami has been one of the most prestigious programs of the last 2 decades, however, alongside their defensive 'bountygate', the Hurricanes' legendary roster filled with stars like Ed Reed, Andre Johnson, Frank Gore, Jim Kelly, Michael Irvin, Dwayne Johnson, Warren Sapp, and Ray Lewis were all offered massive amounts of money to play for Miami. This will go down as one of the darkest days in College Football history, as the NCAA has decided to give the Miami Hurricanes football team the Death Penalty. This puts them on the same level as the Pony Excess of the 80's, with many calling this scandal 'cloud 9' due to the storm surge in Miami officially being gone." - ESPN "The fall of Los Angeles's Troy and Miami's Storm Surge (May 8th 2005)"

    Bye Bye, Bush!
  • May 10, 2005: USC superstar Reggie Bush announces that he plans to transfer out of the program. In an interview, he says “I want championships. I want rings. That’s the most important thing for me, is winning. USC has been great, be we can’t go to the Natty, can’t go to a bowl at all, actually. I don’t think that I want to play in that environment.” Obviously, nearly every school in the country is hoping to get Bush, but the early favorites to get him include Florida, Auburn, Oregon, Ohio State, Kansas State, and LSU, with an additional outlier being present; San Diego State, which isn’t far from his home in Spring Valley, California.

    Soccer news
  • May 25th, 2005:
After 20 years of misery and impatience, Everton have won the Premier League in dramatic Fashion. Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea blew their opportunity to as the team with 73 points heading into March managed to win the title in an incredible story with only one game to spare. Alongside this news, this coincides with another investigation into FIFA's corruption, and it reveals that there were many bribes placed in UEFA and FIFA to FIX important events like the champions league, player signings, European Championships, and even the World Cup itself. This has lead to a crisis in the sport, with calls for the likes of Sepp Blatter and Gianni Infantino to be arrested under charges of corruption, bribery, and robbery of money from the likes of clubs from South America including Sao Paulo, Boca Juniors, and Once Caldas.

    CONMEBOL drama
  • May 27th, 2005: The saga in South America continues as CONMEBOL clubs such as Boca Juniors, Once Caldas, River Plate, Santos, Sao Paulo, Penarol, Club Olimpia, Barcelona SC (Ecuador), Vasco da Gama, and America de Cali make a lawsuit of $1 billion ($100 million each) against FIFA for ruining opportunities to grow their clubs on a global scale and presenting the clubs of South America as feeder clubs to Europe instead of Great clubs with legendary backgrounds that they truly are. The clubs are infuriated and want to compete while being presented as just as much of threats as European clubs, but will their cry for money help their federations and the clubs themselves grow?

    CONMEBOL Lawsuit
  • June 1st, 2005: The CONMEBOL lawsuit was a success, with all the clubs feeling a huge relief of satisfaction that their plan worked. The way that the outcome works is that all 10 South American national federations will receive $100 million a year for the next 10 years, allowing the leagues to grow to a global audience at a once unprecedented rate. Many are gleeful and hopeful that this change can create a new shake on the club hierarchy.

    Copa Libertadores update
  • June 5th, 2005: After the quick drama was over and FIFA alongside UEFA have begun to fix their ways, the Copa Libertadores (Champions League of South America), has begun to reach it's climax. The defending champions from Colombia, Once Caldas has not lost so far this tournament, with last year's runner up Boca getting knocked out in the Group Stage of this year's tournament. The knockouts so far have provided Drama, with Santos and Sao Paulo tearing the Morumbí down in both legs of an exciting quarterfinal duel, going the way of "Los Santasticos". America de Cali got revenge on River Plate for the 2 finals losses in the 1980s and 1990s, alongside being able to crush "Los Millonarios" at home and at the Monumental. Once handedly took care of 2002 champions Club Olimpia in a not so exciting duel, but the last quarterfinal between Athletico Paranaense and Sao Caetano was a CLASSIC. With both teams trading wins and goals equally, penalties at the legendary Pacaembu had to decide the clash. The winners were Sao Caetano, getting revenge for the 2001 Serie A final and being able to advance to the semifinals of the Libertadores for the second time this decade.

    Semifinal schedule:

June 7 and 14th: America de Cali vs Santos

June 16th and 15th: Sao Caetano vs Once Caldas

    2004-05 Champions League final
  • UEFA Champions League Final - 2004-05

    May 25th, 2005 (Istanbul, Turkey)

The much-anticipated match between Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven took on extra import as Eindhoven entered the match on a ten-game winning streak that handed them the Eredivisie title, and Arsenal earned itself the FA Cup on penalties over Liverpool after its disappointing late stage inability to pip Everton’s miracle run to the Premier League title. Both clubs thus entered the last weekend of May with the opportunity to do a double.

Arsenal, slight favorites, went behind 1-0 at the 9th minute off a header by Philip Cocu, and the remainder of the half would be scoreless after daring chances for Ashley Cole and Cesc Fábregas went wide or high.

At the 46th minute, however, Dennis Bergkamp slotted a pass from Patrick Vieira past Heurelho Gomes to tie the match up. Minutes later, PSV pulled ahead again, once more thanks to Cocu, at 50’.

The game turned decisively against the Dutch clubs however, when midfielder Csaba Feher was sent off with a red card for a tackle on Thierry Henry that Eindhoven fans to this day believe was perfectly legal. Henry wasted no chances to blast his penalty past Gomes to draw the match up 2-2. Minutes later, off an assist from Bergkamp, Freddie Ljungberg scored on a sliding strike that forced him to be substituted off after he collided with Wilfred Bouma and badly twisted his ankle, but was seen pumping his fist to celebrate the go-ahead score even as he was helped off the field. Arsenal’s Jens Lehmann deflected what could have been a tying score at 88’ from Park Ji-sung and Arsenal nearly got a fourth off Bergkamp but it went just off the cross at 90+3’. At five minutes of stoppage the whistle blew and North London erupted in joy - Arsenal had their first Champions League title, cementing Arsene Wenger’s status as club savior and among the sport’s great managers, and became the fifth English club to earn the honor after Liverpool, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
