A continuation of the wikibox TL I started yesterday, this time with popular vote and % numbers that actually make sense and a (very shitty) map (I can't promise that all of these will have maps), we go back in time to the first parliamentary election:
Screenshot 2022-09-07 1130142.jpg

States in yellow elected a majority of Republican MPs; states in blue elected a majority of Democratic MPs; and states in purple elected an equal number of MPs of each party.

The 1869 United States federal election was held on April 11, 1869. It was the first election held following the passage of 16th Amendment, which radically altered the structure of the government, enacting a unicameral parliamentary system and greatly reducing the role of the president in governance (the latter was a major aspect of this, since the main reason the amendment was enacted was due to Republicans deciding they no longer wanted to deal with Andrew Johnson). Schuyler Colfax, noted radical Republican from Indiana and the last Speaker of the House under the old system, was installed as caretaker prime minister and was chosen by Republicans to lead them into the election. The Democrats, meanwhile, chose Thomas Hendricks, Senator from Indiana, as their leader.

With the civil war still in recent memory, the Republicans won a landslide majority, winning 381 seats and nearly 58% of the vote, while the Democrats took 269 seats and 42% of the vote. The Republicans took a majority of MPs in all but six states, while the Democrats did so in only three, while another three, Maryland, Delaware, and Oregon, elected an equal amount of MPs from each party. Thus, Schuyler Colfax became the first elected Prime Minister of the United States, and began setting up for Republican governance, in particular to take a more active role in the Reconstruction of the former Confederacy and the enfranchisement of former slaves. The Democrats, meanwhile, became leery of Hendricks's leadership; though he survived a leadership challenge and became the first Leader of the Opposition, many doubted his ability to win future elections. Eventually, in 1872, this would come to pass, as New Yorker Samuel J. Tilden successfully challenged Hendricks for the Democratic leadership.

The election was unique or rare in a handful of ways as well. The Republican performance is the absolute best by any party in any election since then, both in terms of seats and percentage of the vote. Additionally, it is one of only two elections in which just two parties won every seat; the only other election where no third party won any seats was that of 1885.

This would be a top see for myself in-universe and looks like it would be my all-time favourite movie.

The Southern Rebellion (December 21, 1866 – May 14, 1868) was a failed attempt at secession from the United States. The war was precipitated by the Davis Plan, a sweeping piece of legislation masterminded by Vice President Jefferson Davis, that would end slavery over the course of 20 years and send freedmen to colonies in Central American, the Caribbean, and Liberia. In response to the passage of the Plan by Congress and President John C. Frémont, eight states of the Deep South and Texas seceded in fall 1866, establishing the Confederal Republic of Washington, a nation which protected slavery in its constitution. In response to secession, a Federal army marched into South Carolina while two more armies attempted to take control of the Mississippi and break Washington in two. The rebel armies fell apart against the superior Federals and Washington east of the Mississippi was in Federal hands by the end of 1867. Federal forces west of the Mississippi continued to mop up scattered rebel resistance until May 1868, when rebel general Ben McCulloch surrendered his forces while attempting to escape to Mexico. Taking advantage of the fighting, Spanish-speaking patróns in the Jefferson Territory revolted and attempted to secede as the Republic of the Rio Grande (not to be confused with the 1840 Republic of the Rio Grande) Rio Grandese forces surrendered just several months before Ben McCulloch's surrender in Texas.

In the aftermath of the war, the timescale of the Davis Plan was moved up, with slavery abolished immediately on July 4, 1868 and the speed of freedman colonization vastly increased. John C. Frémont, whose authoritarian tendencies and erratic behavior had become heightened during the war, became vastly popular after the Federal victory and ruled as a dictator with little regard for Congress until the military coup of 1870) Military rule in the south persisted in the south until 1873, when the army was withdrawn in Robert E. Lee's first elected term as President.
