Minnesota Gubernatorial Election, 2014

The Minnesota Gubernatorial Election was one of the closest in the history of the United States. Unpopular Governor Tom Emmer decided to retire after one term in office. Former Representative Michele Bachmann won the Republican primary. Activist Leslie Davis narrowly won the DFL primary in an upset. The Legal Marijuana Now Party nominated former Governor Jesse Ventura and activist Dan Vacek. The Independence Party and the Libertarians endorsed Ventura. Ventura's campaign gathered a huge amount of publicity, and with the unpopularity of the two nominees, a lot of money as well. With Davis' campaign out of money and a distant second in the polls, she dropped out and the DFL endorsed Ventura. The race continued to tighten, with the last poll being a perfect tie; the state not knowing whether to vote in a failed governor running on a "wacko" third party platform, or a ridiculously conservative former Representative who was an anti-vaxxer.

The results were insanely close. After nearly a year of counting, the winner was sworn in, after winning a 10th recount by a margin of 2 votes.

After a lot of convincing, Senator La Follette of Wisconsin was convinced to throw his hat in the ring. To be more exact, the Republican convention. However, his progressivism hurt him with Conservative delegates, which had coalesced around Coolidge. Lowden and Wood, once the frontrunners, dropped out after realizing that the convention is going nowhere. In the end, the Conservatives won out and Coolidge became the nominee. He was paired up with Senator Warren Harding.

The Democrats, in the meantime, had a messier convention. Was it going to be Marshall? McAdoo? Smith? Wilson? Bryan? No one knew. Eventually, it was decided that a compromise candidate was needed. The notorious red-baiting attorney general, Alexander Palmer, turned out to be the compromise. Supported by Woodrow and Edith Wilson, Palmer took the nomination and made West Virginia congressman John Davis his running mate.

La Follette, disgusted with the two parties picks of “reactionaries”, formed the progressive party and had their own convention. The progressive delegates unanimously chose La Follette, but were split on a running mate. In the end, California governor Hiram Johnson became La Follette’s running mate.

Coolidge and Harding were extremely popular. “Be Cool, Vote Coolidge!” was a slogan and a popular song, which made him increase in the polls.

Coolidge won in a landslide, and his 1st term saw him implementing economic policies which is making the economy roar. As 1924 begins, Coolidge is a popular man.
